]]>@Brandon P. Ryan Newman, Christian Fittipaldi, they did that
]]>There were certain fuel mileage tracks that would always really annoy me. Michigan was one of them. I remember the announcers were talking about teams already starting to save fuel, and they had just started the race! I don’t mind fuel mileage finishes at all, but it seemed like nearly every race there for a few years was coming down to fuel mileage. There was also a few years when Penske suspiciously got waaaay better mileage than everyone else. And this was a point in time when most everyone didn’t like both Keselowski and Logano both.
]]>@Brandon P. I would personally rather not have them, but I do enjoy watching the mid point races. My main gripe is that the all star race isn’t wacky enough now. Lol
]]>@Aoi_Demon Yeah I definitely agree that the 3rd segment is too short. This is the only issue I have with stage racing.
]]>@Brandon P. That does bring up a good point, that said, it was a bit of an outlier. Although it does show that it can happen. Not taking away from it, as it was a fuel mileage race, just not in the old way
Of course, this past year, there has been more green flag runs and I know they have been talking about if that would be an issue. That said, there hasn’t been many crazy fuel saving strategies (like lifting halfway down the straight, etc)
3 years ago, I would of stood by that view point, there was so many cautions and short runs that there wasn’t enough time to try to over-cut the competition (run more laps before pitting). Even now I would still asterisk that, as a fuel run would normally start around the last 3 pit cycles or even sooner. I think the 3rd segment is too short for that to develop though.
Anyways, that race as well as a few this year has shown it can still happen, just not the same as it was in the past. Of course in the past few years, there was a fair amount of late cautions, so realistically it wasn’t piratical to push the fuel mileage when they will probably bunch back up (also shown a few races ago when NASCAR waited for everyone to pit before the yellow for the loose tire).
But, yeah fuel mileage races can still happen
