Outside of meeting him over a dozen times at the track and other appearances over the years, my favorite moments were: the first win at Charlotte (still have that t-shirt with Matt’s faded signature), the 2003 Championship, both Daytona 500 wins and the last win at Phoenix, not to mention the fight with Keselowski and the epic payback of Logano at Martinsville.

First, I’m glad someone covered this. I remember in 2005 following him as a fan and points watching each week. When he caught up and ended up making the Chase, I was ecstatic he made up that many points. Thought it was insane. As far as a favoring moment, can’t really pick just one. The close duels, even ones he lost, with Johnson, Burton, Larson/Elliott, Kahne, etc. all stand out. His IROC championship season was also cool. Winning on his 500th start. Moreover, his dry sense of humor made his interviews enjoyable, as well.

He went from a few laps down and not making it to the next round, to winning the race and ultimately the championship.

It’s hard not to overlook his rookie year though, but between his first victory at the Coca Cola 600 holding off Bobby Labonte (who was always there at the end at the Charlotte races) and his consistency, he quietly beat the media juggernaut that is Dale Jr in the Rookie of the Year battle.

His first Busch win at Rockingham in ’98. I followed him from back when he was racing late models in Wisconsin, and that win meant he really had a future down south. Crazy to think he’s a Hall of Famer. Congrats Matt!

It’s also incredible that Mikey’s car didn’t even attempt to blow over considering he was on his lid enough that year.

I mean he’d be a 3 time champion if Jimmie Johnson would have picked a different profession, he simply was unfortunately driving during the prime of the most dominate Nascar team ever.

I was a kid, and I still remember coming home early from something during the Bristol race, cause by-god Matt Kenseth was dominating and my parents and I were NOT going to miss his first win of the year after watching him struggle so hard.
