Mark was my favorite since I learned of the sport. I was once on an 800 mile road trip and found a little shop in the middle of nowhere. Bought $200 of his memorabilia.

As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR, this whole situation reminds me a lot of what happened in F1 in 1980-81 where the teams that supported the FIA then known as FISA (ex: Ferrari) frequently butted heads with the teams in the Formula One Constructors Association or FOCA (which mainly consisted of British based teams like Williams & McLaren). Throughout 1980 tensions had been rising between the two sides over revenue sharing & the commercialization of F1 along with a technical agreement. Both sides refused to meet with each other during this time. This all came to a head at the 1981 South African GP when the FIA refused to sanction the race due to widespread global criticism over the choice of South Africa to host it (this was at the time South Africa was under apartheid rule). The teams in FOCA objected to this decision & chose to race anyway. This angered the FIA so much that those teams were close to being banned from the next race & FOCA even had set up a breakaway championship with races on it in case they couldn’t come to an agreement with the FIA . Luckily a split was avoided when both sides saw the damage that could be done & the Concord Agreement (which still governs F1 today) was signed.
