Dale came into the 98 500 with 29 wins at Daytona and 7 wins at Dega. Add in Manny other competitive races and coming close several times in the 500, it was much more of a mystery that Dale had not won the 500. I think some thought he might be cursed at Daytona like a Lloyd Ruby or Michael Andretti at the Indy 500. Yet, KB has just 6 wins total between Daytona and Talladega. KB is not the ‘restrictor plate’ racer that Dale was, not even close.
