With the increase in width, these cars almost gained a fifth tire’s worth of grip compared to the Gen6 car, with a decrease in spring rate with the reduction of the sidewall. As there is natural attrition in wheels with damage and fatigue, this would also have a minimal cost impact on the teams. I think Nascar could solve so many of these competition problems by switching to a narrower tire on a 17in rim.
