Since Petty would fill the stands track with spectators, Richard had a condition that track owners had to abide by allowing him to run an extra 30hp over the rest of the field. A win for the track owners and the “King.”

I saw this race in person as a 12 year old, my first superspeedway race. I had to see those Superbirds and Daytonas with their wings. Coolest thing I have ever seen and still to this day my favorite Nascar memory. Sad moment though when my favorite driver Bobby Isaac blew right in front of me with 11 laps to go. I was sitting in the Ford grandstand he was going into turn 1 so I was sitting with the enemy. They loved it, it broke my heart until then I thought I was his good luck, he had won the only other race I saw earlier in the year at Martinsville. Miss those winged Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds. They were so cool.

48 races in 1970
8 wins for the Superbird
4 wins for the Daytona
4 wins for the Talladaga
4 wins for the Spoiler II

Ford withdrew from racing the year prior. Ford teams were using year old parts and cars and still managed to win a few big fast races. Think about that

Reply
Cobra428SCJ June 29, 2021 at 5:55 am

The rest of the wins were won using regular nosed cars

If Nascar was like this again, I would watch it. Real stock cars, gritty drivers, the winner circle was in the grass by the fence! Everything was raw and authentic. Make it like this again.

I first saw the 1970 Plymouth Superbird in Cars 2006, and I love that car! I wish Nascars today were more diverse like back then. Old racing cars had a style no modern race car has

This was the first race I ever attended at 10 years old! We went to the infield, and what an experience that was! Go-Go boots and miniskirts were the order of the day for the infield “ladies”, and the infield itself was a mud bog from rains the night before! Pickup trucks with scaffolding erected high in the sky made excellent perches for passed out drunks ! It was great stuff! I also remember seeing Marty Robbins driving in that morning through the infield road! I was hooked! That is until the following spring, when dad took me to Bowman Gray Stadium and I saw the modifieds for the first time! Never looked back after that night, and now in my 60’s, I still prefer a good old Saturday night speedway to the big leagues! Thanks for posting!
