Chris Buescher has been one of the best NASCAR drivers in 2027, well-positioned to make the playoffs and excelling in a contract year. While a return to RFK Racing is the likeliest outcome, there are swirling NASCAR rumors that another option could be on the table.

Motorsports reporter Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic shared last weekend on a live episode of Door, Bumper, Clear that Buescher has interest from a Ford team and a Toyota team.

  • Chris Buescher stats (NASCAR.com): 12.231 average starting position, 12.769 average finishing position, six top-10s, two top-5s, 68 laps led

RFK will do everything in its power to retain Buescher. While he’s won just one Cup race over the last three seasons, he’s one of the most consistent drivers. Team owner Brad Keselowski has two charters for next season, which would seemingly go to him and Buescher.

Staying with RFK might be Buescher’s best option. He’s been a great fit with the No. 17 team and is presumably the best driver RFK can land. However, a bidding war could complicate things since RFK may also have to pay tens of millions of dollars to land a third charter for next year.

While the identities of the two teams weren’t disclosed, two stand out. Legacy Motor Club, a Toyota partner, is adding a third car next season. Buescher could be the new face of Jimmie Johnson’s Cup team.

However, previous NASCAR silly season rumors have suggested that Legacy might already have its target for the third car. The team also doesn’t have much of a track record of success, so Buescher might be better off staying with RFK.

As for the potential Ford team, the likeliest option is Wood Brothers Racing. Josh Berry, who sits 31st in points and has an average finishing position of 25.538, has underperformed this season. Buescher would be a more expensive driver for the team, but he would unquestionably be an upgrade.

NASCAR silly season is fast approaching with plenty of buzz regarding potential changes that could be coming. While drivers finding new Cup Series teams is typically the focus, there reportedly could be a charter on the market.

In a live episode of Door, Bumper, Clear this past week, The Athletic‘s NASCAR reporter Jordan Bianchi said there is a charter up for sale in the Cup Series. There was also an implication that Haas Factory Team could be the one to sell its charter.

Related: RFK Racing Driver Could Lose Chartered Status in 2027

Earlier this month in a preview of NASCAR silly season, Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports said that Cole Custer’s future with Haas was uncertain. He’s been one of the worst-performing drivers in the Cup Series this year, sitting 35th in points after finishing 11 of 13 races outside the top 20.

While selling the charter would take Haas out of the Cup Series, it could position the organization for great success in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. A modern charter is worth tens of millions of dollars, which Haas could invest in strengthening its two-car team in the O’Reilly Series.

Related: Insider Reveals Potential Cost of NASCAR Cup Charter

There will absolutely be a market for a full-time charter in 2027 if Haas, or another team, decides to make one available. That’s because RFK Racing’s lease for its third charter is expiring and going to Legacy Motor Club.

With RFK wanting to retain its three-man team of Brad Keselowski, Chris Buescher and Ryan Preece, the best path forward is finding a third charter. Otherwise, one of the three would have to run in an open car next season.

Given that Preece and Buescher are both free agents, RFK needs that third charter to guarantee either driver receives a full payout in each points race next season. Without that, other teams could potentially swoop in and offer a higher payout in a chartered car.

After being dropped by Trackhouse Racing, veteran NASCAR driver Daniel Suarez signed a one-year deal with Spire Motorsports this offseason with his Cup Series career on the line. A career-best season may have changed everything.

On Monday’s episode of The Teardown, motorsports reporter Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic said that Suarez will be back with Spire Motorsports in 2027.

“Suarez is not going anywhere. They like him, they really value what he’s bringing to the team.

Jordan Bianchi on Daniel Suarez

Less than a year ago, Trackhouse announced it wouldn’t be retaining Suarez. He finished the season with an average finishing position of 20.89 and an average starting position of 23.53, recording a pair of top-five finishes.

Fast forward to 2026, he’s found a home at Spire. Through 13 races, Suarez has already matched last season’s total for top-fives (two); he boasts career-bests in average finishing position (13.92) and average starting position (13.00), and he currently ranks 10th in points.

Meanwhile, Trackhouse has been a relative disappointment. Shane van Gisbergen is performing well this year, but Ross Chastain is 23rd in points (112 behind Suarez), and rookie Connor Zilisch is 34th in points.

At Spire, Suarez has been an outstanding teammate, with reports that he’s been a glue guy for Carson Hocevar and Michael McDowell. The team now has two race winners this season, with Suarez and Hocevar both in a great position to make the Chase.

A contract extension should be coming for Suarez, and it’ll be well-earned as he’s made the most of this opportunity in a prove-it year. It also takes another domino out of NASCAR silly season, with a majority of the top impending free agents either extended or likely to be re-signed.

At Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, Daniel Suarez put the pedal to the metal and let his performance do the talking, clinching an emotional win at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He dedicated the win to Kyle Busch, honoring the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion after a somber week for the racing world.

Busch passed away on Thursday at the age of 41 after complications from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, according to a statement released by his family. Before the race, NASCAR honored the 2015 and 2019 Cup Series champion with a tribute ceremony attended by his wife Samantha, children Brexton and Lennix, parents Tom and Gaye Busch, and brother Kurt Busch, the 2004 Cup champion and 2010 Coca-Cola 600 winner.

During pre-race laps, the 39-car field performed a “missing man” formation, leaving Busch’s starting position empty. Fans also observed a moment of silence, while drivers carried No. 8 decals on their cars to honor Busch and his longtime Richard Childress Racing number. On Lap 8, the broadcast went silent as fans raised eight fingers in tribute.

Suarez, who once drove for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Truck Series during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, used strategy and changing weather conditions to secure the win. His Spire Motorsports team opted for a two-tire stop with 45 laps remaining after a caution caused by lightning. Rain soon intensified, leading NASCAR to halt the race and eventually declare Suarez the winner after a short three-lap run with 27 laps left.

The victory was Suarez’s third career Cup Series win and his first since February 2024, ending an 82-race winless streak. It also moved him to 10th in the Cup Series standings as the regular season reached its halfway point.

“This one really means a lot,” said Suarez after climbing from his No. 7 Chevrolet while wearing a No. 8 hat in Busch’s honor. “I’ve been saying for years this is my favourite race of the year. … It’s been a very tough week. You know, Kyle, he was special, man. We wanted to win this one for Kyle, Samantha, Brexton and Lennix and his family.

“Every win is special, but definitely this one has a special flavour because of Kyle. This one is for him. If it wasn’t for Kyle, I wasn’t going to be an Xfinity champion. I wasn’t going to have my shot in the Cup Series. To be able to win this race for him is unbelievable.”

Christopher Bell finished second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Tyler Reddick, and Kyle Larson. Austin Hill, driving the No. 33 Chevrolet in place of Busch’s No. 8 car for Richard Childress Racing, finished 27th.

Busch leaves behind one of the greatest statistical resumes in NASCAR history, recording 234 combined victories across the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series, including 63 Cup Series wins, ninth-most all-time.
