They practice, and practice and practice, and still missed 2 nuts.

sometimes that’s done on purpose and you hope that there’s a caution for 1 last pit stop

For everyone that is interested in what impact they are using it’s most likely the “Thunder Gun” made by Ingersoll Rand. It runs up to 15,000 rpm at 1000 ft-lbs. Don’t even think about buying one unless you are apart of a race team, not for general public.

Tyler Perlenfein January 4, 2022 at 2:59 am

@James Lalone You missed the point entirely, stupendous job.

Reply
John Madden February 1, 2022 at 3:34 am

You can buy a not street legal Thunder gun on ebay right now $350

Reply
cbr1000rrSP Rider February 5, 2022 at 5:05 pm

That little pissy gun ain’t s***. Wait till you see the one that will be used on the next-gen cars for the single lug nut. They’ve been using them for years and trans amps and other race classes they operate on $275 PSI of nitrogen

Reply
Just a Goose March 2, 2022 at 4:27 am

@John Madden Not that matters because they use a special bit that ruins the lugs and the bit has to be replaced every like 100 used because the spirals strip out

That’s how fast I change a tire when it’s freezing outside.

Reply
TheGiant Gaming November 15, 2021 at 6:40 pm

FIA be like : “Under 2 seconds stop is too fast, it increases the risk of failures!”
No failures happen.
-Forces 2sec minimum stop

NASCAR be like : “4 ppl take it or leave it, don’t care how fast/how slow, just do it.”
-Lugnuts flying everywhere, absolute chaos around the car

Reply
Terry Sweat November 20, 2021 at 1:15 am

Well I’m guessing that in 2022 with only one lug nut to only worry about pit stops will drop even faster.?!?!? We shall see to be continued….

Reply
Dane Van Pelt December 5, 2021 at 5:18 am

Lol they WERE getting dangerously fast, go watch Kimi snap his rear tire changers leg in half a few years back, there have been plenty of injuries the last few years before pit stop regulations were changed, and for good reason. When’s the last time you’ve seen a horrific injury due to the cars being released too soon since the new system has been implemented.

And hell, I’m a Red Bull/Verstappen fan, with plenty of distain towards Mercedes…so no bias here.

Reply
Alex Villalobos January 2, 2022 at 10:49 pm

Especially with the money equipment and like a 10 person crew to remove one lug nut….

Reply
Just a Goose March 2, 2022 at 4:24 am

@Ian Jones Not to mention they even refill the drivers camelpak in some cases and even rip off body panels or apply tape over damage to reduce drag DURING the 15 second stop. NASCAR pit teams are nutty

For those of you wondering about how hes able to hit those lugnuts @10000-14000rpm accurately, the socket isnt hexagonal. Think of a bolt extractor nut, but without the spiraled rifling. Its still rifled just straight down rather than at an angle. This gives a smaller engagement on the faces of the lug nut, and damages it in the process, yet still tightens it to proper torque. The socket is also set screwed onto the drive of the thundergun to prevent it flying off. With the thundergun spinning at that high of rpm, you would never be able to tighten the lugnuts with a normal socket. Its impossible for the human body to move fast enough to overcome the tool spinning so fast. It would round off the faces of the lugnut before it ever hit correctly.
