Leigh Diffey is a fantastic commentator and I’d rather have him instead of Rick Allen.

Also, only in the Xfinity series can Kyle Busch lead the race on the final lap, blow a tire, and still end up in 2nd place after a leader ran out of gas ahead of him and someone was able to make it to the end in front of him.

Used to commentate the Supercars championship in Australia, but didn’t stay too long. The Aussies didn’t like him for some reason.

Rick Allen overrates everything and doesn’t really fit into into commentating. He attempted to commentate an IndyCar race last year and he was horrible in comparison to the normal ones.

Leigh Diffey! Gah I wish he was still commentating F1. Why doesn’t Nascar have him do more of their races?

It annoys me when people are annoyed by fuel mileage races. Some of my favorite finishes!

@Aoi_Demon What about 2019 at Watkins Glen when Chase Elliott ran out of fuel just after winning the race?

Reply
Aoi_Demon June 12, 2021 at 1:45 am

@Brandon P. That does bring up a good point, that said, it was a bit of an outlier. Although it does show that it can happen. Not taking away from it, as it was a fuel mileage race, just not in the old way

Of course, this past year, there has been more green flag runs and I know they have been talking about if that would be an issue. That said, there hasn’t been many crazy fuel saving strategies (like lifting halfway down the straight, etc)

3 years ago, I would of stood by that view point, there was so many cautions and short runs that there wasn’t enough time to try to over-cut the competition (run more laps before pitting). Even now I would still asterisk that, as a fuel run would normally start around the last 3 pit cycles or even sooner. I think the 3rd segment is too short for that to develop though.

Anyways, that race as well as a few this year has shown it can still happen, just not the same as it was in the past. Of course in the past few years, there was a fair amount of late cautions, so realistically it wasn’t piratical to push the fuel mileage when they will probably bunch back up (also shown a few races ago when NASCAR waited for everyone to pit before the yellow for the loose tire).

But, yeah fuel mileage races can still happen

Reply
Brandon P. June 12, 2021 at 1:59 am

@Aoi_Demon Yeah I definitely agree that the 3rd segment is too short. This is the only issue I have with stage racing.

Reply
Aoi_Demon June 12, 2021 at 2:12 am

@Brandon P. I would personally rather not have them, but I do enjoy watching the mid point races. My main gripe is that the all star race isn’t wacky enough now. Lol

There were certain fuel mileage tracks that would always really annoy me. Michigan was one of them. I remember the announcers were talking about teams already starting to save fuel, and they had just started the race! I don’t mind fuel mileage finishes at all, but it seemed like nearly every race there for a few years was coming down to fuel mileage. There was also a few years when Penske suspiciously got waaaay better mileage than everyone else. And this was a point in time when most everyone didn’t like both Keselowski and Logano both.

Imagine if Mark Martin won that 09 Championship

Reply
nascarfanatic2425 July 1, 2020 at 5:18 pm

@DoomusRLC To add insult to injury, a second one took both Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon out. Texas gave a little false hope when JJ crashed, and Mark finished 5th. After JJ won at Phoenix, though, that’s pretty much all she wrote.

Reply
DoomusRLC July 1, 2020 at 5:24 pm

@nascarfanatic2425 that’s what I was referring to, haha. Before that wreck where Mark flipped, JJ was in mid-20s and Mark was, like, 5th haha

Reply
nascarfanatic2425 July 1, 2020 at 5:41 pm

@DoomusRLC I thought JJ had already gotten around Mark Martin prior to the one with 5 laps to go when Ryan Newman flipped. Mark and Jeff’s big one happened coming to the white flag on a Green-White-Checkered.

Reply
DoomusRLC July 1, 2020 at 7:12 pm

@nascarfanatic2425 oh right. It was the prior wreck that flipped the switch as far as running position lol

Reply
nascarfanatic2425 July 1, 2020 at 7:42 pm

@DoomusRLC Yep. And that wasn’t the official final nail in the coffin for Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon, but Texas was kind of a false hope week. The final nail in the coffin for Jeff was Jimmie Johnson winning in Phoenix, and for Mark, it was him struggling in Homestead.

2011 Coke 600, The Chicagoland chase race with Tony Stewart, and the Chicago nationwide race when edwards and allgier both run out on the last lap. And so many others Im forgetting about would make a great part 2!

I was at that pocono race and that was the best finish I’ve ever been to. Everyone was running out of fuel guys were slow and some that were good were just flying by them and it was awesome. You had no idea what was going on it was awesome.

I actually really wanted Kyle Busch to win that Xfinity race. Imagine blowing a tire as you take the white flag and somehow still win. Would’ve been one hell of a story
