Petty GMS still has a few weeks to change the name back before the season starts

It’ll be really cool for a few reasons if he wins a race in this car since it would be his 84th win, and it would be the first ever win for the #84 in NASCAR

I think this change for Petty GMS will be a huge step-up, and could become the next elite team

Facts. Unquestionably

@kg01 I personally think Trackhouse and 23XI are most likely to become elite teams in the future, both have young talent and good equipment. The others have the potential for championship level performance, but it’s still up in the air where they go.

Agreed, Maury Gallagher has the money and willpower to build a top team I think. Throw JJ into the mix and they already have top young drivers in Gragson and Jones. There’s a lot to like there.

@IanPerez2000 there is no petty team anymore to return to the glory Days Richard isn’t even the majority owner and pretty enterprises is long gone

Unless they have unlimited funding which they won’t they won’t be a elite team. Nowadays it pretty much takes a endless bank account which many companies just don’t have.

Best ally scheme ever.
I like the #84 for JJ but I’m going to really miss the Petty name.

As a UK nascar fan I can confirm legacy motor club definitely sounds like a UK car owners club name for 60-80 year olds that own classic cars and meet up at car shows in a field and chat on deck chairs. In fact it probably already exists as one on Facebook somewhere.

Zak_ Salter January 11, 2023 at 6:51 pm

They broadcast nascar in the uk?

NeblolTheCarNerd January 11, 2023 at 6:54 pm

@Zak_ Salter I just watch the highlights on YouTube. However they do broadcast on the UK but it’s on some random paid channel nobody has ever heard of that you have to pay a subscription specifically for.

@Zak_ Salter yes they have trackpass on the nascar website for people living outside america so we can watch all the races here

From an original JJ fan, I love the 84 for JJ for both reasons!

In many other sports, there is a philosophy to gather the best talent you can get and find roles for them once they’re locked in. That’s what it sounds like hearing from Petty, where there’s so much knowledge and talent in the room, and they’re feeling out how it all gels together.

Legacy Motor Club is a great name, imo. Nascar seems to be on a trend where teams are self identified, rather than just being the name of the owner (see Trackhouse and 23XI as opposed to Penske, Hendrick, and Gibbs). If you’re going to go that route for a team headed by Petty and Johnson, reminding them that there’s a serious championship pedigree in the building is important, and Legacy does just that.

Not a Bowman fan but those schemes are great, especially having a night variant. Not many sponsors are putting this much effort into their schemes and I appreciate that.

84 was AJ Foyt’s number in IndyCar, driven by the following drivers:
Chip Gannasi (yes, the same)
Johnny Rutherford (3 time Indy 500 and Indycar champion)
George Snider
Sammy Swindell
Mike Nish
Stan Fox
John Andretti (did charlotte/indy double for AJ at Indy,)
Billy Boat
Robbie Buhl
Donnie Beechler

Foyt cars also used 48.
Jeff Andretti used #48 for Aj Foyt. So a lot of connection to IndyCars 7 time champion and Andretti name.

84 is good number!

As a massive Petty fan, I don’t know how to feel about this, and I believe this is the first time a Petty named team hasn’t been on track.

I don’t really like it either but at least the 43 car is still on track you see number 43 you think King Richard and the true Petty family team hasn’t existed since the end of 2008

attaching a human name to a business can hold it back once someone with that name is no longer there. a neutral name gives the ability for more people to feel ownership in the goal

Legacy Motorsports would’ve sounded better I think. Still excited to see JJ on track. Would love to go to a track where he is racing.

It’s interesting that they said a couple weeks ago that they were wanting to incorporate JJ’s name into the team.

LEGACY sounds like a class in the nascar game to carry back the nostalgia and not a real team, i totally agree with Erick

First let me say, I’ve been a Petty fan since the 60’s. At almost 77 years old, I really don’t do change well. This Legacy change, at first, really did not sit well. In fact, there are a large group of us old Petty Enterprises fans who are still banded together in social media. After thinking about it for a while, if it gives Richard some relief to needing to be at the tracks so much, then I’m all in. Richard will one day no longer be at the track. Maybe this gives him an out. But I do worry that no Charlie One Horse hat, no wrap around sunglasses, at the track will be a disappointment to many. Richard is such an iconic “sight”. Is the NASCAR world ready to no longer see that? Are we better to let him ease out than to have to get through a time when he has suddenly transitions between this life and a heavenly life. I think about the Gibbs family and the shock that they faced with their sudden loss. Do we really want that shock of Richard being suddenly gone? I, for one, would like to think he’s sitting at home watching a race on a Sunday. Of course he’ll still be around some. But in the end, I care enough about Richard and his long history in this sport to want him to have some “him” time. If this will give him that, I’m all in. He’s never going to be forgotten. As long as there is a 43 car on the track, Richard Petty’s aura will be there surrounding that car. As I said, I’m all in.

Wish more teams would have dedicated night variants of their paint schemes, looking at night races from when I was growing up brings back memories of all the different schemes teams would run only during the night races.
