Every Daytona 500 That Didn’t Go 500 Miles

The Daytona 500 is far and away the most famous race in all of NASCAR, and all too often it looks as though the race is not actually 500 miles. There can be extended races alongside races that do not make the 500 mile difference and each has a unique story to look at. So with that being said, let’s look back at every Daytona 500 that didn’t go 500 miles.

Easily 2020, Monday afternoon after school, and some of the best superspeedway racing ever.

2015, underrated Daytona 500. Rewatch it racing was pretty good

The Rain-tona Fire-hundred from 2012, just from that name alone. I think that’s what a newspaper article called it, the day after it ended lol

I’ll never get over the fact that the 1974 Daytona “450” still took place even regardless during the energy crisis. I find that the most unique Daytona 500 race that didn’t go 500 miles

the 1974 season in general was weird i mean look at the point system for that season.

@Charles Peterson Jr yeah that’s the worst non-chase format ever

I think the 2009 Daytona 500 was affected by rain only because of a late start time

Eric Estepp was one happy camper that day

A lot of fans said that if the race started at 1 PM, the race would have been fully completed. NASCAR listened to the fans, and in 2010 that’s when they came up with the 1 PM-3 PM-7:30 PM start times.

@Matthew Kowal yep they listened to fans yet the 2010 Daytona 500 was delayed by a pothole. Plus the 2012 Daytona 500 was supposed to start at 1 pm eastern but got rained out. Pfft

@NASCARFAN93100 I’m surprised Eric Estep survived infancy with as dumb as he is

The last few 500’s that have gone long have all been legendary. 2019 has JGR winning for JD, 2020 had Newman’s flip and 2022 had Cindric winning on Roger Penske’s birthday.

crystaljon January 25, 2023 at 12:59 am

It’s always the flip, isn’t it? No one remembers 2020 having the first back-to-back 500 winner in 25 years.

Ato January 25, 2023 at 1:01 am

and 2021 was horrifying

Reply
DarkCrypto January 25, 2023 at 2:49 am

@crystaljon most people tend to focus their attention on the flip and the safety of Newman (which is more important) in that instance rather than Hamlin’s first back to back 500.

@Ato We don’t talk about the 2022 Choo-Choo 500.

I was at the 2020 Daytona 500 and will be going to my second 500 in 2023.

Talking about 2009, crazy to think if sadler went to the bottom to block kenseth, he’d be a daytona 500 champion and so would Ray Evernham. Also Dillon didn’t wreck Almirola, Almirola wrecked himself with that late block

Interesting facts regarding two of those Daytona 500’s: The 2012 race could have been shortened due to track damage after 160 laps with Dave Blaney winning it, and the infamous 2020 race is the longest Daytona 500 at 209 laps/522.5 miles. As far as the last 500 to end under caution with 200 laps completed is 2021, but before the GWC rule was implemented it was back in 2000. Even though Mark didn’t win the 500, he has the bragging rights to say he led lap 200 of the Daytona 500, the last lap in regulation.

Could you imagine the uproar if the 23 car won the 500 last year. That’s twice he has been 2nd it’s only a matter of time.

John Haas January 25, 2023 at 1:36 am

The woke Maga supporters would have brought racism into it and if wins it ever that will be reaction

And Austin Dillon also won the 500 17 years to the day that Dale Sr died.

I still wish Dave Blaney won that 2012 Daytona 500, would’ve been a whole weekend of 1st career wins with John King and James Buesher

I would have to say the best one out of these was the 2007 Daytona 500, I just wish Martin had won.
