While not at its height today NASCAR still is a very popular sporting league in America. At its peak NASCAR was breathing down the NFL’s neck with TV ratings and was also far and away the most popular spectator sport in the world. This happened in particular during the early 2000s and in 2006 we saw the peak of NASCAR’s viewership. The 2006 Daytona 500. This is the most watched NASCAR race ever.

What is your favorite Daytona 500 memory?

The one Chase will win. My number 1 memory would be watching Dale Earnhardt Sr winning in 1998. Both of Jr’s wins.

The day BlueJimmie48Fan became a Jimmie Johnson fan.

Somewhere, Eric Estepp is unhappy with Tony Stewart trying to “kill” Matt Kenseth

My Dad was probably watching the race so I bet he was disappointed that Junior didn’t win it. He probably didn’t like HMS at that time as well cuz their dominance was obnoxious.

I wonder if NASCAR ratings wouldn’t have dropped so much if they just stayed with FOX and NBC from 2001 to now. Also I’d love an Iceberg video on how many Daytona 500s Dale Sr. could have won if everything went right.

Yep it’s sad that NBC had to create a story which ruined there chances to get a new contract. Maybe they should’ve let TNT and Fx do the second half of the season that would be interesting.

I hope that the 2023 Daytona 500 will be legendary. I think this year’s Daytona 500 is gonna get the most views in a long time and maybe could top the 2006 Daytona 500 as the most watched race ever. I can’t wait for the race any longer. I am so pumped up!

I doubt that it will get views NASCAR has to jog before it sprints. Pfft

Ah Rafa, we meet again. Maybe or maybe not this year’s Daytona 500 will become the most watched race ever. In my opinion, it has a slim chance of being the most watched race cuz of the storylines going into the race. Kyle Busch now driving for RCR and yet hasn’t won a Daytona 500, Ty Gibbs replacing Kyle Busch but using a different number, Jimmie Johnson coming back to NASCAR as an co-owner and part-time driver and he’ll attempt the 500, Travis Pastrana will attempt the 500 with 23XI, and this is NASCAR’s 75th season. That’s a lot of interesting storylines that’ll get people interested to watch.

Just to clarify Matt Kenseth’s penalty: he drove above the blend line to drive alongside Stewart. That rule had been in place for many years. He was supposed to stay below that line until Turn 1 but, understandably, he had red mist in his eyes.

“Remember this thing Tony Stewart said” is something Ive said so many times in my life. Great driver. Maybe the biggest hypocrite to ever step foot in a race car.

2007 Daytona 500 finish!! First one I watched. I became a fan in 06 when I was 11

Meanwhile at the same time NASCAR was doing this, F1 (at least in the US) was doing the complete opposite with record low ratings on Speed to the point that Speed was seriously thinking about dropping the sport. A lot of this had to do with the fact that many F1 fans in the US boycotted the sport after the farce that was the 2005 US GP. For those wondering what the most watched F1 race ( at least in the US) is, it is the Abu Dhabi GP from 2021 mainly because of the title battle between Max Verstappen & Lewis Hamilton & the controversy surrounding the finish of that race.

This was one of the strangest daytona 500s ever. The weather was strange. The wrecks were even strange. Also with the aggressive driving penalties it made the race feel strange.

Imagine how crazy it would have been if Casey Mears went with Newman and somehow won the Daytona 500, only a couple weeks or so removed from winning the Rolex 24

This race is underrated in my eyes. It’s not the barnstorming wreck fest that we see now. Handling was a huge factor due to the conditions, and the conditions themselves gave a really ominous feeling to the whole race. I happen to really like the 2006 race.

The first nascar race I ever attended, was a Jimmie fan as a kid since 2003 and this was one of the best days of my childhood without a doubt.

3:28 Not the only time TV had a say in a race start.

2005 UAW GM Quality 500. Someone many years ago (can’t remember the video) said they ran like 10 pace laps, and remember a clip of Chad Knaus on SPEED Channel saying “TV director is going to give NASCAR a countdown”. There was a USC vs Notre Dame game running long that night and the coverage switched right as the pace car pulled off track.

The start of Jimmie’s run of 5 consecutive Cup titles, a feat which in today’s format will surely never again be matched, hell in today’s current format winning 2 in a row is damn near impossible. My favorite 500 will always be 1998 just because I watched in agony as Sr lost 500 after 500 leading up to that…
