The 2023 Daytona 500 did a lot of things, one of these was to get rid of the multiple or just in general overtime finishes. NASCAR overtime has been relatively popular since being implemented in the middle of 2004 and other than a few tweaks in the 2010s has not been highly criticized by NASCAR fans. But now after Kyle Busch was beat out in overtime for what would have been his first win in the Great American Race. So, should NASCAR overtime be abolished?

Do you think NASCAR should abolish its overtime?
Yes. It didn’t solve the problem, race still ended under yellow anyway. All the other yellow flag laps count, and so should the last couple.
Cap it at 1 attempt.
Well AFTER last year’s all star race which almost had Mike Joy say some truths on TV of how garbage NASCAR handled the entire overtime situation that almost disqualified Blaney.
it should return to classic rules with a twist, Overtime is now accepted only at road and street courses, Ovals and Superspeedways goes on without it.
If NASCAR is serious about keeping costs down for the smaller teams then GWC needs to go away at least at the super speedways. I don’t know how much money was lost in all those wrecks at the end, but I’m betting it was a bunch. What’s the difference between Kyle winning under caution and Stenhouse winning under caution while he was sitting still on the track?
I can go either way, but you briefly mentioned they will never race back to the line again. But that in and of itself would make a finish more satisfying. The 2007 daytona 500 is the perfect example because in today’s NASCAR, mark Martin wins that race because somebody upstairs pushes a button 1000 ft before the start finish line. You can race to the line in both scenarios, whether you abolish OT or not, it can still work. If you want to abolish ANYTHING, abolish the yellow line rule.
Someone floated this on Darian’s Instagram Q&A but they suggested that there should be no OT, but if the caution comes out in the last 5% of a race, the caution flag laps don’t count.
(Not a bad idea IMO but also don’t know how that’ll fly with fans)
I like this idea more. But still like a strict number on laps
That’s basically what the overtime rule is now. The only difference is that with caution laps not counting, that could mean drivers would have more time to work on their cars if needed, and still stay on the lead lap no matter what.
lmao how does that change anything? All that would do is make races take longer to finish
I honestly don’t think stage cautions should count towards the lap total, but I’d also agree with this as a move
I personally am fine with them trying to finish under green at all costs without compromising safety to a ridiculous degree. In my opinion with this new car they need to consider risk vs. reward with overtime. If the cars were safer than I would be 100% for it, but right now I’m 50/50.
Remember the overtime line rule where they’d run 1/2 a lap and the race could be called? That was the worst!
Yep and I say 1 lap an one attempt at overtime with caution laps not counting.
I’ll agree to disagree. The simple fact is I like checkered cautions, and so when the white and yellow would get displayed together that could potentially set up a finish running on fumes.
Either Go Back to One Attempt or Go to Single File Restarts for Overtime at Plate Tracks. Could have lived without the last 2 Wrecks to be Truthful.
1 attempt at GWC. It’ll change the mentality for the drivers as to how aggressive they will be, especially on the plate races. I think it’ll also deliver more exciting finishes and bring the nerves for the fans watching at one big boiling point.
I think the “bad finishes” are mainly a problem on superspeedway races since it’s so easy to wreck with pack racing. Someone on twitter had an idea for how to bring racing to the line back: Have a secondary finish line on the back straightaway so the leaders can race to it if a wreck happens behind them. For instance, if a wreck happens in T2 that is behind leaders have them race back to that so it can still finish under green with a great finish, but not jeopardize safety.
They already did this. It did not go well.
@Jordyn Propst the OT line was different, was to stop they doing OTs and finsh the race in yellow as quickly
I like it, or maybe we have a reverse OT line, where the track can stay green if a wreck happens because the next time the cars pass, they’ll be going at reduced speed anyways.
@J. Paul M. I agree if the wreck on the last lap is on the backstretch they should keep it green because by the time the leaders reach them the next time around they’ll have a whole half lap to reduce their speed
Id say its less of the superspeedway racing style. And more of the length. Id just go with one attempt and call it good.
I just wanted to point out that not a single race this weekend finished under green lol, idk the last time I’ve ever seen that happen also
I don’t think it should because ever since a Talladega race in 2004 for the spring race when Jeff Gordon actually won the race do two cars that actually spun out and brought in a caution with only four left to go and the race ended even though people thought Dale Earnhardt jr. Won the race considering after time of caution but yeah I think they should keep the overtimes
I don’t think they should get rid of OT and go back to ending under yellow, because after 2 or 3 races ending like that, fans will get frustrated already. Maybe restarts with like 10 laps to go and OT restarts should be single file, to at least give the leader and and top 10 a fair advantage without utter chaos destroying their race. And also only 1 or 2 OT attempts and that’s it. The combination of double file restarts and unlimited OT attempts creates this chaos and honestly is not fair for the front runners who put themselves in that position at the end of a race to have a good finish or win the race.
There needs to be an attempt to end the race under green. Too many attempts is a problem though. Especially at Daytona and Dega. Though 2 laps at short tracks is too few imo. 2 laps at other tracks works perfectly.
Personally I like the overtime to get a “TV” finish… 3 tries might be overkill tho. I don’t see much of a difference between that and artificially putting out a red flag at 2 to go. For super speedways I wish they would let them race back to the finish on the last lap like back in the day if the caution occurs on the backstretch or coming to the line… like far enough that cars have time to slow down before returning back to the part of the track that had the wreck after crossing the line
I like the OT. The only time it’s a problem is at super speedways and even then it’s more exciting than having it end at the scheduled distance.
I think the wrong debate is being had tbh, maybe I’m missing something but I think this all could’ve been avoided by NASCAR not being so quick with the yellow flag. Let them race back to the line for gods sake
I think the issue is driver etiquette. Towards the end of the race everybody seems to lose their crap
Did everyone forget how hated the ending under caution was? Every short track in America had a GWC rule. Nascar didn’t want to get outshined by short tracks.
the main problem is not the overtime. its the fact that The caution just freezes the field immediately, and its just a matter of when someone in the tower hits a button, and THAT is what determines the winner of the biggest race of the year. 2 seconds earlier, joey wins.. Same with the xfinity race on sat.. Im not saying that racing back to the caution flag like of old is the best option… but maybe an updated “overtime line” where if they dont make it to turn 3 or 4 on the last lap, the race can have another GWC. And then by that point, if a wreck happens in 3 and 4, they just dont throw the caution and just let the leaders race back to the line, bc it would literally make no sense to throw the caution at that point bc the leaders would not endanger anyone that is all the way over in turns 3 and 4 by the time they come back around after they have already finished….. Thats literally the only fair thing i can think of where it takes the human element of someone in the just clicking a button either a moment too soon or a moment too later, and deciding someone’s fate.
Sometimes the overtime is unfair, but I’d rather have a 2023 Daytona 500 than a Monza 2022 or Abu Dhabi 2021, even as a KB fan
Also, I’m pretty sure it can be more dangerous to finish under green whilst an accident happens
I don’t think it should be completely abolished but do some tweaks here and there.
Like either caution laps won’t count with under 10 to go or red flag the race and then run it back all the way to green.
I don’t love the nascar OT rule but if they got rid of it and races would finish under yellow with 4,5, or even 6 laps to go I think that would be way worse. I think if there is a wreck on the back stretch or in a later part of the track they should race back to green because by the time the drivers reach the wrecked cars the next lap around they’ll be going at much reduced speeds
