Jimmie Johnson has 7 championships with a shorter career I find that hard to argue that he isn’t the GOAT of the modern era. Yes wins are important but the rate of domination for that period was unlike any other.

Hard to argue.

Dale earnhardt was far better than overrated Jimmie

The GOAT needs to go away because many are Great in their own catergory.
1.Championships
2. races won just in Nascar Cup series
3. races won in total Nascar wins

But what if he doesn’t win 1 or 2 more championships? This is all based on a lot of ifs right now. He’s going into his prime time years but you never know. It takes a lot to win in this series. Jimmie’s fall off was pretty dramatic. But 7 rings.

He’s passed his prime

Kyle is in the convo but the straight dominance of JJ and JG is something I’ve never seen. I witnessed the end of Sr but it was like they won their first race and just ran wins off so fast. 7 titles with 5 in a row is amazing in itself

Hendrick…versus JGR..

Now he’s already almost 2-0 with RCR.

K Busch is a rock star. I was never a big fan, but you can’t deny that man has skill, persistence, and drive. I can see this happening. It’s a young season.

Jack Frost March 2, 2023 at 2:06 am

I agree he has skill… But not as good as Gordon was! Jeff is the PRINCE of NASCAR, 2nd only to Petty

Reply
Nascar and Rc March 2, 2023 at 5:20 pm

@Jack Frost Jeff is 2nd to Dale

Tru Spirit March 2, 2023 at 12:55 am

He would be top 5 all time but not the goat…..

Gary Kennedy March 2, 2023 at 1:08 am

33 wins in 3 seasons in the modern are for JG against Earnhardt Sr the most dominant span ever in moderation area and like they say to be the man you got to beat the man and JG is the only driver to come out on top against the man Kyle is great but Jeff was better

Reply
Jack Frost March 2, 2023 at 2:05 am

Kyle Busch has passed his prime! He’s also nowhere near Jeff Gordon’s skill level! Jeff Gordon is the PRINCE of NASCAR and always will be! 2nd best after Richard Petty!

Jack Frost March 2, 2023 at 2:09 am

Wait! If you’re taking “modern era” what are you even comparing him to Jeff Gordon and especially Bobby Allison?

Reply
Rom March 2, 2023 at 2:12 am

Based on the original Cup point system, Jeff Gordon would have won 7 championships. There is no way KB is better.

T-N-T Racing March 2, 2023 at 3:29 am

But, due to the rules that are in place at the time, Jeff Gordon has 4 titles so your argument is invalid. You can use “should haves” as an argument. Stats are stats.

To be the greatest of all time, I’d argue you’d have to have changed the game. Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson all did. Kyle is incredible but I don’t know if his impact is the tectonic shift that other greats have made. He’s pushed others to do better, and no one else has been as consistent as he has for as long as he has in as many races as he has. One of the faces of the modern era for sure.

File Gumbo March 2, 2023 at 2:00 pm

Mfer has had 2 rules implemented for the lower series. Being 18, and limiting cup series races.

Reply
DrMarioMarioMD March 2, 2023 at 3:35 pm

@File Gumbo Yeah that’s true. It’s been a while since I looked at the pre-rule change Xfinity series and I remembered Brad K, Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick being a part of that.

But on the other hand, I have to wonder where JGR and especially Toyota would be without Kyle winning 200+ races for them and having one of the best, if not the best, truck teams.

This has to be the dumbest argument I’ve ever come across. kB is maybe top 15, but nowhere near top 2, even top 5. He’s on the downside of his career, with subpar equipment. There’s no way he wins 3 a year for 10 more years. Didn’t he just bust out of a nearly year long winless drought?? He may not win again for the rest of the year, and hasn’t had 3 wins in a year since ’19. This is a pure trash take, @nascar and you can argue that first championship came with a bigger asterisk than Barry Bonds HR records. Plus, JG has 7 in the pure championship format, with KB only winning 1. JJ would be at 5 iirc in the true points system. So KB can’t even be put in the same boat. Even a really big boat…

Don Lightfoot March 2, 2023 at 4:22 am

It’s too difficult to compare eras particularly in a sport that’s changed as much as Nascar. Transposing one’s success into another era is silly because drivers of different eras were trying to achieve different markers to win the cup. They were/are all great in their own way.

Id argue Logano is actually better than Kyle. Same amount of championships in fewer seasons, Daytona 500 champ, and doesn’t have inconsistent seasons like Kyle has. Kyle’s been fairly mediocre since 2020 when covid hit.

Reply
J C March 2, 2023 at 4:21 pm

The answer is no. I can’t even compare JJ’s championships to JG’s just due to the change in points systems. It’s very possible that JG would have got to 7 or 8 if the system hadn’t been changed, we’ll never know. Not to say JJ’s wasn’t an amazing run but I don’t think Kyle is better than JJ or JG personally.
