NASCAR laid down the hammer this week on numerous different drivers and teams and one of these was Denny Hamlin. Hamlin had run into his old nemesis as he put Ross Chastain up and into the wall at the end of the race at Phoenix. With this a big debate on how far NASCAR has gone with their enforcement has taken off. On top of that it has actually sparked new debates alongside it. So, NASCAR has set an odd precedent.

Do you think NASCAR needs a change in penalty policy?
The problem is more where to draw the line. Imagine there is a tough fight for the championship in the last race and one driver collides with another and becomes champion.
A few months later, in an interview, he admits that he had no problem with the car at all, but that he collided on purpose. Should NASCAR then change the championship afterwards?
What part of the penalty process ????? Bringing a car that you know doesn’t meet spec …. or basically flat out wrecking someone for no reason.. I think it’s clear as for on track activities….. ( Boys have have it .. but DONT make us get involved ). Depends on how stupid you wanna be.
There’s an good area I believe. If you bump someone out of the way, you shouldn’t get penalized. However, if you can tell based if telemetry or from the situation that was intentional, there should a penalty (probably on the track)
They just need to be more consistent but then again, it’s like asking politicians not to be corrupt jerk faces.
@Markus Göpfert In this instance Denny had zero reason to wreck Chastain. So should drivers be allowed to wreck another on the last lap just because they didn’t like the way they raced them the previous year?
I feel like the penalties have been very inconsistent
That’s because they have been…
NASCAR needs to stay out of the drivers business on track unless it leads to violence or incidents have gone on for weeks. Otherwise, let the drivers sort it out.
Except when they let drivers settle it that completely blew up in there face when Carl Edwards turned Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch turned Hornaday the list goes on.
@Run Rafa Run #THEBESTINTHEWORLD The Hornaday turn was one of the most shameful in Nascar imo. The drivers need to have more respect. That’s where the good racing came from long ago.
This is all just politics. If he admitted this a year later, nobody would care. I agree you can’t say boys have at it and let drivers bump and bang and then penalize them for being honest. I am not a danny hamlin fan but I do enjoy action’s detrimental just because he does speak his mind and he seems to be honest. If you listen to the whole podcast Ross chastein and Denny actually called a truce and said we are gonna race each other better from now on but nobody’s listening to that part.
Certain people live with certain freedom. That’s what NASCAR has came down to.
It’s always been this way
NASCAR doesn’t allow itself the authority to judge wether or not something should be penalised
They should be a superior entity, that does not need any admissions of guilt, to be able to hand out penalties.
And we all know how NASCAR is with their judgement calls if they were to predict if it was intentional and its severity. Hamlin didn’t even have anything to be mad at him about this season. But just like in other sports, the retaliation ALWAYS gets penalized. And that seems to be what NASCAR is trying to go towards
He said it was for the clash this year
@Dakota Jackson And he was on Briscoe’s rear end throughout the entire corner and almost spun him out at the same time. It’s a *non-points race* where everybody was getting run over by everybody. And he’s the only one to hold a grudge over that race
@TSholts I’m just saying what Hamlin said. It probably had something to do with last year too. I’m sure he’s frustrated that Ross has basically gotten away with everything he’s done to him and they hadn’t had a real conversation about it. Now they have and they called a truce. That’s what I don’t understand about this penalty because they’ve settled it between themselves
I think it’s really interesting how varied the opinions are on NASCAR decision. Half the people I would expect to call bullshit are in agreement with NASCAR, and vise versa. This topic is a really good test for me on seeing which people actually stand on their morals and which people just want to jump on the bandwagon to get attention and views.
It alr was when Gordon and Edwards weren’t penalized on their horrible wrecks against Bowyer and Keselowski but Kenseth got suspended for a payback against Logano
Another one was Harvick intentionally causing a big one with no penalty but MWR getting their whole team shut down for also deliberately causing a caution
Nascar gotta be more consistent and equal when given the same circumstances
There’s no denying that NASCAR lacks consistency when it comes to penalties. Bubba was suspended last year for his incident, but Noah Gragson was only docked points and fined for intentionally wrecking Sage Karam at Road America and getting Brandon Brown hurt in the wreck. It’s a major problem when intentionally wrecking someone yields different results instead of having a set penalty to match the intent and damage
My only thinking about this is because Bubbas was after Noahs and nascar was tired of seeing it. Especially with how much it’s been happening in the trucks.
If Denny kept his mouth shut nobody would’ve batted an eye. I agree the penalty is kinda over the top but he put himself in that situation.
As for Hendrick, that also seems quite harsh considering it had no impact on qualifying and the race, but it seems like NASCAR is staying consistent with this one at least.
EVERYONE IS SAYING HAMLIN SHOULD NOT HAVE SAID WHAT HE SAID. Now I’m no Denny fan but at least nascar has someone’s who’s completely honest and not Saying like his tire went down because so many drivers say stuff like that and Hamlin actually admits to it.
Yeah pretty much do the right thing, and suffer the consequences
I think Nascar should just leave it to the drivers to police themselves. It creates rivalries, creates headlines, plus Denny even said that they talked it out afterwards
I think you make a good point, an example I’d bring up outside of NASCAR is last weekend Supercars superstar Shane van Giesbergen refusing to answer questions during a press conference because he felt his honesty with the media is what got him disqualified the previous race. Unintended consequences always have to be thought about when it comes to any sort of governing…in sports or otherwise.
The one thing that remains consistent with NASCAR is their inconsistency
I just want good clean racing with entertaining personalities.
If you rewatch 2007 season or so. It’s surprising how much stricter they were on the driver and teams. Being the COT first season, there may be some extra added at those points in time. Like today and the next gen car. They even punished and made an example of that 17 fan at watkins glen who got his autograph mid race
Denny Hamlin is the General Zod of NASCAR
You’re videos are the best. I’m always looking forward to the next video wether I agree or not. Keep em coming ICEBERG. ❤
I guess with Spingate, the combining factors that NASCAR heard it all over the radio, the half-hearted way Clint Bowyer tried to blab a way out of it and (most of all) the Chase implications of the spin and pitting Vickers immediately on the restart to bring Truex barely into The Chase was behind why the 3 drivers and MWR were penalised 50 points and the team fined $300K.
