Imagine if that hit was drivers side I bet huge changes would happen immediately

the drivers side is a totally different design from the passenger side, if you look up pictures of the bare chassis theres a ton of reinforcing on the drivers side

Jesus April 25, 2023 at 3:05 pm

The cab structure of the Gen 7 is better suited for this type of crash than the gen 6, drivers side was reinforced even more to keep the roof and door bars around the driver from bending

Cherice Evans April 25, 2023 at 3:32 pm

Probably not because making a change without study could make it worse not better.

As they should be. Glad Kyle and Ryan weren’t seriously injured by this incident.

what exactly is being investigated?

@T J tell me you know nothing about these cars without telling me

Reply
pareidolia April 25, 2023 at 3:30 pm

@T J At 1:20 you can see the tube bent up quit a bit. Makes me wonder if they used thinner wall tubing to save weight but then again at 200 mph it did it’s job.

@Jesus considering this is on the official nascar YT channel and not everyone is as versed in the gen 7 design as you why don’t you just explain that the driver’s side is much more reinforced for this purpose? it’s not exactly obvious and I didn’t even know it until today

Jesus April 25, 2023 at 4:08 pm

@JohnsonTheSecond After the Newman and Logano crashes in the final years of the gen 6 where the doors and roof bars had bent in crashes like Larsens on the door. With the Gen 7 NASCAR added to and redesigned the drivers side roll cage. The Gen 7 is a stiffer car then the Gen 6 meaning a lesser hit will cause the driver to feel more because the car bends less but makes the driver safer in a crash like this

F Labarre April 25, 2023 at 4:34 pm

Whether they messed with the roll bar to save weight.

Man I Sometimes wonder if Talladega Will ever be conquered because it feels like the track has a mind of its own

It had a bone to pick with the Xfinity cars (probably for having every car finish a Talladega race the year before, for the first time in superspeedway history) so that’s when Saturday happened.

That’s what makes Talladega so wild. No one knows what will happen during a race.

God Bless Talladega. It’s setup for crashes to look good on TV for entertainment purposes yet once a car looks perceived as “to dangerous” of a wreck, then safety comes into play. Either stop racing at Superspeedway tracks or keep racing at Superspeedway tracks and expect crashes and damage to happen. Cars/Drivers can only be so safe when traveling 200+ MPH!

what the heck are you talking about?

When the cars crumpled like in the gen 6

The drivers weren’t being injured this badly, and getting concisions less

And DEFINITELY not bending the crap out of the door bar in the roll cage, yes I understand that the drivers are ok but I do think NASCAR needs to redesign or simulate all of the bugs out of the cars especially with this composit body, is not proving effective especially after the concussions and this wreak

Thank God that hit wasn’t on the driver’s side. That impact could’ve sidelined him for the rest of the season, if not worse.

The broken door supports are very concerning. It was clear during Larson’s interview afterward that he was visible shaken from both the wreck itself and also how the safety equipment failed.

Reply
TIm G April 25, 2023 at 5:01 pm

@Phil Sonnenberg yep, exactly. These bars are detached not crumpled.

Reply
Braxton Jackson April 25, 2023 at 5:17 pm

@Joshua Kosiba Many drivers especially Kevin Harvick has complained that the cars do not crumple. They are to rigid which transfers the impact energy to the drivers body.
I think it is to soon to speculate on what if anything failed which is why the cars are in the R&D center. Looking at this car with the body stripped, I think we can all confirm that Larson is lucky to have had that impact the passenger side vs his driver door.

@Braxton JacksonI think Lady Luck or God or both intervened at the right moment.

Hope NASCAR work out how to improve it, sure they will.

@Peter Brownless I agree, Luckily for drivers, crew and spectators they don’t wait for a death the institute change.

Glad to see that neither one was injured, and thank God that it was on the passenger side and not on the driver’s door. I’m happy that Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece are both okay.

God had nothing to do with it, people who designed the safety equipment and the cars did.

RacingPower19 April 25, 2023 at 3:13 pm

This is actually a good move, I hope they can do something to at least make the possible repercussions happen less and not get any hurt or killed.

The in car camera of ryan when he hit was very concerning to me, he looked like he was in a centrifuge for a couple of seconds, thats a lot of forces pushing on you

Randy Singer April 25, 2023 at 3:33 pm

Thank God it was not the Drivers side that was Hit !!!

With all the talented engineers and resources this sport has I’m still shocked when I see something like this and think how in the hell did they get it this wrong with this car

Erik Schyvinck April 25, 2023 at 4:18 pm

90° T-Bone under real race conditions. Now, make dynamic adjustments for safety. Lucky no one was killed this time.

Reply
Phil Sonnenberg April 25, 2023 at 4:38 pm

Sadly, these are all vendor supplied parts now. Teams just ake whatever they are sent and put the car together like a giant LEGO set. With all the supply issues teams seem to be facing its not suprising that potential defective parts are making it to the teams.

Reply
fire starter105 April 25, 2023 at 4:56 pm

@Phil Sonnenberg All because NASCAR found a way to make more money on vendor kickbacks. Before when teams built and bought parts from reputable suppliers, things were different.

I will say this Kyle’s lucky to be alive. If he got hit on the driver side I think Kyle would have been seriously injured. We seen how violence the accident was from Ryan in car cam. Both drivers are very lucky and I would love to know what the g-force was

The Michigan Man April 25, 2023 at 4:25 pm

Part of me feels like Nascar still runs at plate tracks just to test out how safe the cars are and how to improve them. Why not they wreck half the field in cup and Xfinity everytime they go to dega or Dayton

Reply
Ricky Frenchjr April 25, 2023 at 4:49 pm

With the concussions and now this, it seems like safety went a step back with gen 7.

Reply
colbranmx April 25, 2023 at 4:50 pm

Doesn’t look anything like a older chassis in the door area. old ones would bend and absorb energy not break.
