NASCAR fans absolutely love an underdog story, and it does not matter whether it’s in the sphere of drivers or anyone else in the sport. While many get buried by the competition there are a few so far who have had light put upon them this season and deserve recognition. After 12 weeks of the NASCAR season I want to highlight them as well. So here are 7 NASCAR Underdog Stories To Follow.

Who is your favorite NASCAR underdog?
@smoke.drifter He is the true underdog.
Parker Kligermann and Todd Gilliand
Ty Majeski!
@Toasted what the hell are you talking about? Blaney got this win?
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
I’ve been keeping my eyes on McDowell for a few years now and I feel one day all his hard work and sometimes running up front in a mid pack car , one day it’s gonna pay off for him .
He’s a Daytona 500 Champion.
His hard work has already paid off…
@Mike Clark Fair point .
But we’re talking this year – 1 top ten and no top fives – since 2017, his one win , yes it is Daytona and not many can say that …
He’s up fighting more times than not to have the stats he does is all I’m saying .
@Ty K
Okay.
Fair.
@Mike Clarkhe deserves a road course win he’s such a good road racer
It will be interesting to see how Cody Ware can do at his tenure in jail
Todd Gilliland has been great so far and has been fun to root for. Hoping he gets a good ride in the future, mainly looking at that 4 car
I think it’s between him and Stenhouse for that car tbh, funding notwithstanding
@Tyler Clifton Zane Smith too
@Tyler Clifton Stenhouse? JTG Daugherty will make sure not to lose him cuz Stenhouse is probably the best driver for them since their entire existence as a racing team.
Todd Gilliland is one of my favorite drivers and Ross chastain Todd deserves more respect and his own video if he keeps this up
@Cole Murray if SHR pays enough to buy his contract, I’m sure JTG will bite the bullet and go for it. I remember earlier in the season when a Toyota executive said he was talking to multiple teams to inquire about a manufacturer switch, and I wonder if JTG is one of those teams.
Corey LaJoie is super likeable, fun to listen to, and overperforming his equipment…I would LOVE to see him in a top tier ride at someplace like SHR or 23XI.
I hear ya
Same, favorite driver in a shitty ride, has lots of potential in a better car, probably a week in and week out contender at the 1.5 miles and above
After Johnson retired, I didn’t know who Id pick to be my new favorite driver. But just seeing Corey’s history behind his family and the getting to know him on his podcast and then seeing him start to shine on track, I can safely say Corey LaJoie has become my new favorite.
No, do NOT put him in a Ford or a Toyota. That would be a disrespectful slap in the face. Keep him in a Chevy!!
RFK as a team has been running super strong. Both of those drivers are due for a win
Hey Buescher won at Bristol 🙂
@Elite Peep I think he means this year
@Xavier Juno Ik but once a win always a win 😉
I’ve always been a huge fan of Corey Lajoie. I think he deserves a better ride but for the equipment he’s in he has been doing great. To see him get a win would be amazing and I hope he can make playoffs this year
Ryan Truex…… someone that comes out consistent and quite frankly is trying to prove that he is more than MTJ’s little brother…. definitely someone to keep your eye on
Oh yeah he should definitely go full time in that JGR 19 Xfinity car
@babyeliascookie I’d be down for that
RFK and Noah Gragson are my 3 favorite underdogs right now.
Having been to Nashville Fairgrounds for ARCA East races (including next month), the largest issue is the need to update/ improve the infield as well as surrounding parking/ staging areas. It is a great short track but unfortunately is not in the most accessible area of nashville to get to as well. Hopefully it can see a major nascar touring series but it will be quite awhile before that would happen.
As someone who was a Jeff Gordon fan, I have been watching North Wilkesboro’s story for years. I am so happy this track is back on the speedway calendar this year.
This channel is really helping me get into NASCAR. I started watching a bit last year and have watched every race this year and this channel is getting me caught up on everything past and present.
You’re in good hands. The NWP gang are great.
Some underdogs in other series I would say are drivers like Jeb Burton, Riley Herbst, Brett Moffitt, Ryan Truex, and maybe even Chandler Smith in Xfinity, Matt DiGenedetto, Tanner Gray, Jake Garcia, Christian Eckes, and McAnally Hilgeman Racing as a whole, also in ARCA, drivers like Greg Van Alst and Frankie Muniz are impressing, and Tyler Reif
And a track, the Milwaukee Mile, making a reappearance, after struggling for a while since Indycar left it, and now it’s got a Truck race
Ty Dillon has been my favorite driver. He wants to stay with Spire for a long time and I see Spire eventually evolving into a mid pack team soon. Ty Dillon might not keep as a mid pack driver this year, but I think if he does end up spending a while at Spire, he can end up as a driver like Michael McDowell or his teammate Corey Lajoie. If this doesn’t work out, I don’t see why he can’t hop down to Xfinity and find success there.
I was surprised when Stenhouse won the 500, and hoped he could have a better year then last year
And seeing as though he’s IN THE PLAYOFFS off points, not his win, I am very happy to root for him as an underdog
One underdog this year so far is Matty D in the trucks who is sitting 9th in points in the trucks. Also Frankie Muniz who is leading ARCA points.
Stenhouse is my fave underdog for sure. Especially since he’s backing up the win with solid runs. Getting the most outa that equipment!
You should do this for the lower series too. In Xfinity, I personally like Jeremy Clements and Bret Moffitt as top underdogs, they both had struggles and big success combined in the past. In trucks, I personally like Timmy Hill, he has been pulling a titanic effort for a shoe string family owned team.
In my lifetime, i don’t think I’ll ever see an underdog performance that will match what Alan Kulwicki achieved in 1992
