Before Ross Chastain’s “video game move” with the now famous Hail Melon at Martinsville it was Carl Edwards who accomplished such a feat. In the 2008 fall Kansas race he and Jimmie Johnson were in a tight hunt for the 2008 championship, and the winner of this race would lead the other in the points with only 7 races remaining in the campaign. With it we saw Edwards put up a move of both pure desperation and pure badass craziness that NASCAR is so readily known for. This is the time when Carl Edwards made NASCAR's first video game move.

Carl Edwards walked so Ross Chastain could wall ride.
yeah he did Lmfao
Right on lol.
This comment is perfect. Well done, good sir
Watching Carl do that live was so awesome
Yep I watched him do that live too it was incredible.
I honestly wish it worked. The two races after that failed video game move were the ones that costed him the championship
This would cement Carl Edwards as one of the 75 Greatest Drivers Ever, even if he wasn’t a great driver, which he was 20 times over.
I watched this race on the NASCAR YouTube channel earlier. I needed some Kansas nostalgia. One of many underrated races in 2008.
This race wasn’t that underrated. Also the 2008 Daytona 500 was pretty good.
Yeah
Congrats Carl on being named one of the 75 greatest NASCAR drivers of all time!
Carl Edwards is a Legend
Somewhere in Florida, Young Ross Chastain probably said “One day, I’m gonna try that out, but not dive inside, and stay against the wall at full speed”
I honestly thought Carl was trying to send it on the inside to pass Jimmie. Never saw it as him trying to wall ride it.
Yeah me too.
I miss Carl Edwards days!!
I hear ya
If he won’t make a comeback in Cup I’d at least like to see him in a Truck race or in SRX, or even as a guest in the FOX booth.
You should do a underrated races series narrated races like these are when covered well is always enjoyable,
I remember that .. had insane momentum
Now that I look back at it, 2008 was a great season.
It was decent but not better than 2011 or 2012.
@Run Rafa Run #THEBESTINTHEWORLD to me, 08 was better than 12.
I vividly remember having a literal panic attack watching these last few laps. When Edwards pulled the video game move, a rush of emotions came pouring in, from shock, to heartbreak, to surprise, to happiness in a matter of seconds.
Carl was so much fun to watch. What an awesome talent
Yep fun to watch fun to listen to his comments he was the complete package.
This was the first race I ever attended, watching this video brings back a lot of fun memories from that day.
Carl’s interview after that move was awesome!
Another great video!!! Any chance you could one day do a video on how DW started as great broadcaster and ended on such a low point??? Would love to see it! Also the what ifs because I’m not positive but I think I read somewhere Dale Earnhardt Sr was going to join DW in the booth as soon as he retired from racing. That would have been a dream team in the booth!!! Thank you for all the great uploads
Back then the discussion was “you couldn’t have done that with the old Gen 4 car. The COT is so much more rigid and didn’t crumble when he hit the wall.” Now we’ve taken that 5x with the NextGen car which is even more rigid and is the main reason Ross’s move worked without totally demolishing the car.
