Every year there are dominant drivers that set the tone for every particular NASCAR season, and it has been that way through all of NASCAR history. With this though there are some that are even more dominant than most, but with NASCAR's constantly changing points formats it is difficult to compare drivers' seasons to see who really would have been the best of the absolute best. But in the last 50 years only 2 drivers have scored the most wins and also would have won in every NASCAR format that the series has used in the modern era of the sport. So looking into all of this, was this the most underrated dominant NASCAR championship?

What dominant NASCAR season do you think people overlook?
Carl edwards 2008
2009 Johnson
Me in 2029
Anything pre-modern era.
It’s kinda weird saying that an 8 win season with an average finish of 4.3 in the last ten races is underrated but that’s the world we live in.
World? Try society. I think that’s the way to put it.
Most underrated ones for me are the ones Herb Thomas won in 1951 and 1953
If things went his way more, he could’ve had the first 10 win season since Jimmie Johnson 2007
agreed. michigan, richmond, darlington. that’s just a few lmao
Larson’s engine at Kansas robbed us of one of the greatest championship showdowns of all time
Facts! Larson was the only one close all season to battle Truex
Still DNF’D at all three races in round 3 it wouldn’t have mattered
@V also Kyle Busch.
As an MTJ fan, 2017 was the best year so far and remember it like it was yesterday. Although I don’t think his championship year is underrated at all nor did I expect it to be looked at this way and think it’s crazy that it is, but that’s just me I guess
Technically, it’s not a championship season but Jeff Gordon’s 2007 season should continue be in the talks of all-time great NASCAR seasons.
Jeff Gordon & team lead in every statistical category that season, with the exception of wins.
His Chase performance was also exceptional with 2 wins, 6 top 5s, 9 top 10s & a 5.1 average finish. His worst Chase finish was 11th.
Only a Chase reset to his massive points lead & a red-hot Jimmie Johnson prevented him from taking the title.
Jeff Gordon’s 2007 season was incredible.
6 wins
21 top 5’s
30 top 10’s
7.3 average finish
1 DNF
He won as many races as he finished outside the top 10 that year. That’s insane, but because of the points format, no championship to show for it. Jimmie was just a little bit better when it mattered most.
In a season-long points finish, it would have been over with at least two or three races to go.
@mnowakpoland 100% agree. Jeff was easily the most consistent all year with raw speed to show with his wins.
The Chase reset ultimately did him in. It allowed an inconsistent Jimmie Johnson to catch fire at the right time & beat him at the end of the season.
This season also had an underrated sophomore season: Chase Elliott finished fifth in points and would’ve finished 6th without the playoffs.
He also had the speed to win at Phoenix and Martinsville, he could have potentially gotten even higher.
@Bload72 Productions probably could’ve won the championship if he wasn’t taken out
Truex was destined to win the championship in 2017. He was consistent and dominant all year and winning the championship was icing on the cake.
Eh Larson gave him a run for his money if it wasn’t for stupid mechanical issues in the later rounds he probably could have won it over a hole
@Dan the man We’ll never know if Larson would have actually won it all had he had better luck in the round of 12 and so forth. Truex was just the better driver that year specifically and glad that he earned the championship and not letting the points reset diminish his chances such as Gordon and Edwards to name a couple.
Not even 6 DNF’s could hold Truex down.
I still hold that number 78 closely as a MTJ fan as Cole Pearn and MTJ were underdogs as while furniture row had an alliance with JGR, they were FAR from expected to be champion contender yet still put on a helluva performance.
2017 will forever be one of my all time favorite seasons
The rise of Martin Truex Jr is one of the best stories in the history of the sport. I just watched the slapshoes Truex videos earlier today for like the 50th time.
That was my first year watching NASCAR. I was instantly hooked.. Marty was insane.
I wasn’t watching NASCAR at the time, but it must have been incredible to see such a performance throughout a season
I personally enjoy Truexs 2017 championships and hold it up to be the most dominant in history.
I also personally enjoyed Larson 2021 and I think that it is also one of the most dominant championship in recent memory
But Gordon in 98 is still the goat
Labonte in 96 is underrated
MTJs entire career is underated. Knowing Martin, im pretty sure thats how he wants it too.
2017 was a big year for Truex Jr and Furniture Row Racing. Small team from Denver, I say this was the top of the world for Visser at the time before had to shut down due to “politics” with JGR.
It absolutely is one of the most dominant seasons and it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving driver. When Cole Pearn became crew chief you could tell that team found something magical. So glad that someone else didn’t steal a win and championship with some crazy strategy call in the final race
I think even more impressive than the others you noted….Martin did it with a small team! He wasn’t with RCR or Hendrick, he was at Furniture Row.
