As a long time nascar fan, I am really starting to get worried about the future of this sport. The teams and those in charge of nascar seem to keep getting further and further apart.
I understand your point.
But to counter: Just take a look at the other major racing and sports leagues and all the issues they have had over the years; ie CART vs IRL vs ChampCar; baseball player strikes that delayed and in 1994 actually canceled the end of a season, etc and I think you can see that NASCAR as a whole has been doing OK over the years and will likely be OK going forward.
Biggest reason: No Driver Union in NASCAR.
I’m a racing fan, and I don’t think NASCAR has done much good for the sport in decades. I’m willing to roll the dice with new ownership/sanctioning body.
I’m an old school fan. The very first race I ever watched was the inaugural Brickyard 400 and was a Gordon fan the entire time. I’ve liked it less and less every year since they started the chase. And I’m sure everyone knows why. Because Jeff Gordon would be the one sitting with Petty and Earnhardt Sr with 7 Championships not Jimmie. Also, at the end of his career Jimmie went the equivalent of 3 and a half seasons without winning. Gordon never sniffed a losing streak that long. I think his longest streak was 61, which may seem like a lot but not even close to 3 and a half seasons…
I think it is pretty obvious that Nascar does not give a flying fart about anyone. This coming weekend is a prime example. Having a night race on a Sunday night is bad enough, but it is Easter!!! This will be the first Bristol race I’ve missed in over 25 years. I’ve got season tickets that I’m throwing away and the next step will be to not renew my long term seats. Not really sure why I’ve kept them all these years as I pretty much have the entire section of the stands to myself.
@Jim W Yet attendance is up for that race. So clearly it works for some people.
Love to see you getting these cool sponsors Eric! Glad to be a part of your channel. Thank you for your content
He is the best
Yeah he is
UPDATE: Per The Athletic, the main sticking point is the charter agreement. The team owners want the charter system to become permanent, while Jim France is against it.
NASCAR believes they have made significant progress in their negotiations the past couple months.
Exact opposite of what I was expecting.
@JayDee I’m not surprised at all since It was the owners that wanted the charter system to begin with not NASCAR and Jim France had no say in the charter system even happening. Brian had the say. The Dale Jr fans would love this news that Jim France wants the charter system gone
JIM FRANCE W
Interesting
@John Haas I agree get rid of the charter system. This will open up more opportunity for other smaller/newer teams to come into the Nascar Cup Series.
Nascar only technically owns the sport. In reality the teams own the sport. Without the teams there is no sport. Here’s to hoping Nascar wakes up!
Yep. They can simply not show up to a race to make NASCAR realize that. No teams, no drivers, no race, and no money for NASCAR to get.
@Cole Murray And no value to that charter they bought.
I mean they own the sanction body not the sport lmao. That’s like saying nba owns basketball
Edit:
I agree though, without the teams and drivers we don’t have nascar
@Turbo1Point5 Finally, someone agrees with me.
@Cole Murray I was talking to Stephen but yeah you too! Lol
Appreciate you keeping us in the loop Eric. Thanks for all the effort!
On a side note about Legacy Motor Club. It will be interesting going forward to see what happens with the team. I think with Focus Factor gone it could affect Jones staying with the the team due to his salary.among other things also. I thought with Johnson taking part ownership it would stabilize the team but so far this year the performance has been lackluster to say the least and ownership using Allegiant to shore up races. Things could get difficult for this team. Will have to wait and see how things play out.
maybe they get another partner…maybe the Jr and Johnson thing actually happens???
The salary isn’t an issue when it comes to Jones. Murray Gallagher is more than willing to pay and have his companies on the cars until gets a deal he is happy with. Focus Factor deal was done for sponsorship with Richard Petty Motorsports and it might not have been the $ Murray wanted
Changing the name was stupid. Johnson brought in his suits and they’ve been nothing but a failure
I take Focus Factor it’s good
What Justin Marks did by sticking up for Ross is something you do not see. That is what you call Leadership ! This goes along with the France Family as well ! It is called “Walking with a Pair”
That’s not leadership. That’s blind loyalty because he has a lot at stake and his own money involved. Leadership would be getting his driver to understand that he can pass people using skill and technique instead of causing wrecks and taking unnecessary risks
This all started years ago with teams being limited on time for practice, crew member numbers, qualifying engines, teams boycotted nascar on safety in 1969, none of those teams that boycotted were around shortly after, rats eating the rats now
mark martin is the man.the very definition of integrety.
They need to stop WASTING money at the executive level. The execs currently there are out of touch.
Why Rick how dare you use your real name (just kidding) and say anything bad about The obviously inept Nascar Management types
Thank you, You got this one totally correct. The reporters are running to the driver’s way to quick after a race and there’s to many press members on pit road as well.
Eric, I’m impressed by how far you’ve come. Sponsors, interviews with past & future stars of racing. This means you are taken seriously by those in and around the sport. May your future remain bright.
Tracks getting as large a percentage as they have in the past MAY have made more sense when there was no track competition(no new tracks being built but more importantly No street courses), and when teams could practice more and teams would show up to tracks earlier.
I’d like to see nascar take a tad bit less as a sign of good faith that they are the ones growing the sport and expect it’s growth to match the same numbers, and have tracks admit the fans are there for the teams and drivers, not the same track that happens to be closest.
I think this is an opportunity for local tracks to step up and have more special events.
Especially if they can attract some big name drivers
The days of “you need NASCAR more than NASCAR needs you” are LONG gone.
Nascar controls the charters. It surprised me when they said Jim France doesn’t want to make them permanent.
As an F1 fan in addition to NASCAR, this whole situation reminds me a lot of what happened in F1 in 1980-81 where the teams that supported the FIA then known as FISA (ex: Ferrari) frequently butted heads with the teams in the Formula One Constructors Association or FOCA (which mainly consisted of British based teams like Williams & McLaren). Throughout 1980 tensions had been rising between the two sides over revenue sharing & the commercialization of F1 along with a technical agreement. Both sides refused to meet with each other during this time. This all came to a head at the 1981 South African GP when the FIA refused to sanction the race due to widespread global criticism over the choice of South Africa to host it (this was at the time South Africa was under apartheid rule). The teams in FOCA objected to this decision & chose to race anyway. This angered the FIA so much that those teams were close to being banned from the next race & FOCA even had set up a breakaway championship with races on it in case they couldn’t come to an agreement with the FIA . Luckily a split was avoided when both sides saw the damage that could be done & the Concord Agreement (which still governs F1 today) was signed.
Mark was my favorite since I learned of the sport. I was once on an 800 mile road trip and found a little shop in the middle of nowhere. Bought $200 of his memorabilia.
I’m happy to see you getting some more great sponsors, I hope it helps you get to more races and make the show even better! Way to go!
