Why Ryan Blaney’s Win May Be A Turning Point | Will He Keep Winning?

Ryan Blaney had the most dominant win of his NASCAR Cup Series career on Monday in the 2023 Coca-Cola 600. With this many could look at this as a good change for the Penske driver, but history does say that he may just continue the same old same old with trends. Blaney has been a pretty confusing driver over his career thus far, being maddeningly consistent but not capitalizing on it with victories. So let's look into all of this. Why Ryan Blaney's win may be a turning point, will he keep winning?

Do you think Ryan Blaney will keep winning?

As long his pit crew don’t screw him over he got a shot

If Ford can step it up

I hope so. He’s been my favorite driver since 16’ and he’s super consistent but that’s not what wins championships in this era.

Happy for Ryan blaney the tears in his eyes he waited a long time to get it done. 59 races it been long overdue congrats to him once again

Honestly I feel like the window is now open this year for Ryan Blaney to make a run for a championship. His teammates are struggling, Chase Elliott is not up to par on performance, Kyle Larson is somewhat inconsistent despite multiple wins, and JGR is a wildcard thinking only one of them will make the championship 4. I feel like he could win at least 3 more races and finally make the championship 4.

Maybe…… He either will…… Or he won’t…….

Possibly but drivers like Christopher Bell are on tap to make another deep playoff run. Plus he made the final 4 last year where as Blaney hasn’t made it in the final 4.

I really hope so

Nobody is keeping up with the 5 and 24 teams this year. JGR is a distant 2nd tier. RFK has probably had the most speed consistently out of the Ford teams.

His only ‘real’ competition is William Byron who leads the series in wins, but has been getting penalties out the wazoo

I think Blaney can get to the final 4, and potentially win the cup

Being a Blaney fan, I disagree that he normally doesn’t recover from pit road mishaps. His pit stop team is really mid tier, and he has more times than not picked up spots that were lost on pit road.

@Mike Brown I missed going in person that year. Watching on TV, I was kind of glad.

@Mike Brown That was a truly pathetic display by his pit crew that day. Lost around 60 spots total

I hope Ryan Blaney keeps winning. There probably wasn’t a more popular win this year than Blaney winning the 600. It’s time for Blaney to step up, be the lead driver at Penske, and make the championship 4.

Even with Team Penske’s and Ford’s struggles this year, Blaney is 1 point behind Chastain for the points lead and would’ve been the winston points leader.

He’s been super consistent to the point where he can go on a tear. All he needs is his pit crew to show the same consistency Blaney has and he’ll be set up for title contention.

It’s suck for Blaney because he seems to be on the lowest priority driver for Penske. Lagono is very swingy, and Cindric seems to not be much of a factor for the most part. Yet Blaney, he who is your most reliable driver gets the worst out crew of the three. Also, Blaney is your most popular do over of the three.

@Lich Azeakel I still believe SHR made the wrong decision to tap Josh Berry to drive the 4 car when they could’ve tried to go for Blaney or Bell.

Lich Azeakel June 1, 2023 at 9:37 pm

@Run Rafa Run #THEBESTINTHEWORLD thing is, I don’t SHR being anywhere near the team they were a few years ago. Even with Blaney being the bottom man at Penske, it’s still better then SHR currently.

Can we talk about how Byron has made his 60 point penalty practically vanish to only being -4 for the points lead

Reply
Rustklz June 1, 2023 at 7:54 pm

Yeah good for him, last year he was only able to get wins, and struggled in points, but now he’s turned over a new leaf.

Reply
Reach OW June 1, 2023 at 8:02 pm

@Rustklz good for Bowman too. See if he’s consistent as well

@Reach OW Bowman’s avg finish is like 10.5 he’s really good this year.

With the Kasey Kahne comparison that Kyle Petty gave out earlier, Ryan Blaney may have to do more than just win races. Top 5’s top 10’s are key.
So far, he’s currently the points leader in the standings, so we’ll see

Reply
Kevin Littrell June 2, 2023 at 3:23 am

I think the key difference between Blaney and Kahne is that Kahne was very inconsistent. He was either winning in dominant fashion or collecting DNFs. Blaney doesn’t always dominant, but he rarely throws a race away. Even when Blaney has a miserable day, it almost never occurs in a DNF and he’s pretty damn good at salvaging a bad car or circumstances.

This was the win Ryan no doubt needed. Where he absolutely had the best car and dominated but having said that, I’m still not ready to say he’s arrived or he’s about to breakout I need to see more

In the Dale Jr download there were a lot of comparisons to Jr’s droughts in his career. As a Jr fan all the way from the Busch series in ’98 I was thinking it was nothing like his droughts. Jr was finishing 28th every week for seemingly years at a time. Blaney on the other hand never dropped off in performance. He just couldn’t get to the flag 1st for some reason. A bit like Chastain right now. He wasn’t great at Charlotte but despite not winning in like 40 races he’s been a top 5 contender almost every week. Blaney never really fell off in my opinion.

Reply
William Wagoner June 2, 2023 at 1:12 am

Yea but Jr was consistently a 3-5 win a year driver early in his career. Until the team swap with the 15 he was one of the top drivers in the sport between 00-04.

@William Wagoner I’m talking about his early Hendrick years. It was beyond rough.

Sherwin John June 2, 2023 at 3:29 pm

Yeah Blaney had like 6 or 7 stage wins last year

Project Bullitt June 1, 2023 at 8:20 pm

His win in Atlanta was impressive too, and all about the driver. It may have been the 550 package, but it was tire management that won that race.

If not for his normally pathetic pit crew, he’d have 15 wins.

Ford is struggling this year so I’m not sure about his chances moving forward.

This was a win that Blaney needed. When you go through a winless streak that long, you get questions of can you still win? And Blaney has been incredibly fast this year. He’s gotten the results but he hasn’t pulled through for a win. Now that he’s gotten that win I don’t see why he can’t go on a great run.

James Sykes June 1, 2023 at 8:24 pm

I’m all for it if he does. I love Ryan.

Noa Garcia-Brown June 1, 2023 at 8:48 pm

I feel like a better comparison for Ryan Blaney is Ricky Rudd or Terry Labonte. They were more consistent drivers not necessarily setting the world on fire. It’s just too bad the current points system does not reward that kind of driving.

Zax Geraci June 1, 2023 at 8:50 pm

I think we’ll see Blaney get really good as he gets older with experience, Truex didn’t start getting really good until 2015. But Truex Jr didn’t drive the best stuff from the start.

Crazy But June 1, 2023 at 9:46 pm

Blaney is a lot like Chastain in the way that they have great pace and are very consistent but they have a real hard time sealing the deal. Whether it’s their fault or not they just don’t seem to peak at the end of a race.

Ryan Blaney gonna be my new favorite driver next year he is consistent and doesn’t wreck much too

I could be wrong, but I think he will slug along the way he has been. He will win just enough to have a video like this one made every so often, and keep his job.
