0:00 Martin Truex Jr. Retirement Talk
3:43 SHR Announcement
7:34 Making the right choice?
Mark Martin almost won the championship in 2009, at age 52.
50*
Josh berry is not mark Martin tho
@elliot they are talking about Truex
@Greg Lane I think they were talking about Mark Martin
Nice to see Josh Berry move up to Cup next year for SHR. I’ll keep an eye on him for next year. Wonder what other changes we’ll see for 2024 for not just Cup, but Xfinity, and trucks.
While I, and many others, would be happy if Truex signed on for another year or two, I think if he walked away right now with a championship, 2 Xfinity championships, and a 2nd place Daytona 500 finish, no one would think any less of him. He’s 43 now. Not too many drivers nowadays outside of Harry Gant and Mark Martin can say that they’ve achieved great feats like he has at the Middle Ages of human life. He’s earned the right to step out of the car at any time, and yet, he still chooses to race because that’s what he wants to do. He can keep going or retire. Either way, he’s definitely a good man who deserves to be honored with a blue jacket some day.
As for Berry, I don’t know if SHR is making the right decision. I think they need a stable veteran to race for them right now. They need a Harvick type figure to lead the garage, and right now, I’m not that confident that Almirola, Briscoe, or Preece could do this. I’ll have to wait and see how Berry plays out next year, if he signs, but personally, I’d be more comfortable going a safer route with an older driver, especially someone who can be an effective team leader.
But… Berry’s a good choice too. I just hope he will know what he’s in for next year hanging with the big guys full-time.
Where are they going to get a competitive veteran, though?
@J DIdk, maybe Michael McDowell?
@J D that’s the other problem. The stable veteran drivers they would need to snag into a contract are with other organizations right now. They missed out on Busch, and on Chastain last year, and on getting Suarez back for another run. And to add insult to injury, people who could be trusted to be good quality veterans like Edwards, Kahne, Newman, Montoya, and Ambrose have left the sport seemingly for good now. I’d say the safest bet at this point, if he hasn’t signed another yearly deal, is McDowell, but I won’t hold my breath on that just yet.
Coughs *denny hamlin*
@Wessel WeaselHamlin is towards the end of his career, and since he owns a Toyota team and drives for another…
Seems like the perfect time to announce this. They are racing at Josh Berry’s home track this week at Nashville Superspeedway. About an hour away from his home town in Hendersonville, TN.
Preece/Berry/Briscoe is definitely a foundation you can build on, SHR needs to start providing faster equipment though.
Yeah, if harvick had half decent equipment this year he would be a championship favorite, they just aren’t up to speed and haven’t been for the last couple years
@Parker KnocheNone of the Ford teams are doing all that well. Chevrolet has some solid teams and drivers.
Plus Tony is busy over in the NHRA with his wife Leah’s Top Fuel car and Matt’s Funny Car, plus Tony is currently second in points behind Norwegian driver Julie Nataas in the A/Fuel dragster.
Then there’s SRX…
Lot on everyone’s plate!!
It’s a solid move for Berry and SHR.
Congratulations to Josh Berry ! Maybe he can be the one to turn around that team
If Harvick can’t, I’m not expecting a rookie to. I like Berry. I’m pulling for him, but I just don’t see this going well
Can’t wait to get some Josh Berry merch! I’m excited to finally have a cup driver to pull for based on personality and merit. Gonna be have to swallow the chevy pride and pull for a Ford on Sundays haha
I agree from the perspective of getting his foot in the Cup Series door. Everyone acknowledges SHR has regressed massively since 2020 and although Harvick has carried as hard as Jordan and the Bulls people understand Berry’s expectations.
Should it not work out like with Suarez or Custer, chances are he gets an opportunity from Xfinity or Trucks. In all likelihood he will contend for the playoffs out of the gate. More importantly his talent as you said is his resume versus sponsors, he can easily talk and refine that organization with wisdom
I personally think in the next couple seasons Austin Dillon will take over the reigns for RCR and his ride will open up. I think this move will happen to better the company I see Austin as being a lot like his grandfather, good driver but better at running an organization and putting people together.
More likely Austin’s dad will take over.
@Karen KoeIndeed.
I see Austin and Ty taking on certain aspects of the team, with Austin taking the ownership reins in 2028.
Ol Richard would want to be around for the 30th anniversary of Dale and 10th anniversary of Austin’s 500 wins, then disappear.
Let’s not forget, Kelly Earnhardt Miller is a big key to JRM’s success!!!
Smart cookie
Kelley is my favorite Earnhardt.
And don’t forget LW ..
Really happy for Josh Berry…that is a prime ride to grow in. For all those disappointed that he didn’t stick with Chevrolet, there isn’t any room. Hendrick is full of young talent. Unless Austin Dillon gets cut by his grandpa, the 3 and the 8 are locked up for years to come. Dale Jr has done a great job in preparing young drivers for their progress to cup through Chance2 and JRM. He has produced cup champions from his Xfinity teams like Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr, and Chase Elliott. Hopefully Josh goes out and gets a Cup Championship one day.
Exactly he wasn’t signed with Chevrolet specifically just JRM what was he supposed to do? Wait til an Chevrolet ride becomes available in the Cup Series? It’s an good opportunity for him to try the Cup Series full time next year if this is true.
This is another mediocre signing for SHR, let’s be real here
@The Snapperheaddo you even watch nascar racing ?
@jono Pearson Absolutely. Berry is Chase Briscoe best case scenario. He will be lucky to get 5 career wins.
@The SnapperheadI guess haveI got a little bit more faith in him than you
Glad to see Josh Berry is getting a change to move up Cup next year for SHR maybe HAAS Automation will step in as a sponsor. Have a Happy retirement Mr. Harvick and thanks for the memories.
Gene Haas burned up a truckload of money this weekend at the Formula One race in Canada. Expensive hobby!
@Gary Jackson It’s nice having a Formula 1 team in your back pocket. $$$
I’m looking forward to seeing how Josh Berry does with SHR. I think SHR needs him as much as he needs them at this point. Their most talented driver is retiring, and their other drivers have been woefully underperforming. Get someone in the car with some real talent and, after a year or two to learn the team and the Cup series, I think he can be a worthy replacement for Harvick.
I hope this is the next Matt Kenseth & Robbie Reiser duo. They don’t have the history but could have the chemistry to make it successful. I miss the days of the 17 DeWalt car.
If Truex retires soon, I think John Hunter Nemecheck would be a good replacement choice
Congrats too berry..glad too see an experienced rookie earning his way like back in the day..nothing wrong with a 25 or 26 year Olds either but unless your a phenom should probably wait until around that age unless your Making non chartered starts around which would help overall get experience and full fields.. trucks have 38 for 36 spots, xfinity 41 for 38 and cup 36 for 40..come on nascar and teams get these fields full again
Josh deserves a good ride in Cup….glad for him and SHR
Berry is consistent, doesn’t tear up equipment and just seems to be a humble guy. I’m a little surprised Chevrolet let him get away.
This is your best commentary yet. I love Josh solely because he is advancing on talent alone.
