Why NASCAR Fans LOVE NBC

Visit the New Merch Store Here:

The Nashville Superspeedway was not just the first win for Ross Chastain of 2023, but it also was the site of the first NASCAR weekend for NBC Sports this year as well. With how bad many have viewed FOX it should be no surprise that many were happy but it seems like over the last 5 years we have seen NBC Sports become the clear favorite of fans. Today we look into the current factors that have helped their popularity. We will look at why NASCAR fans love NBC.

Very interesting imo they should bring back CBS and get rid of fox and let cbs do the first half of nascar fox coverage has just gone downhill theses last few years

NBC doesn’t have F1 type of coverage but it’s WAAAAY better than Fox. They treat every battle for the lead like it’s the final lap of the race. They even have post race shows like it was in the 2000’s into the mid 2010s.

Reply
Mr J June 27, 2023 at 11:18 pm

Post race shows are just needed.
I feel like the guys at NBC just love the sport.
Nothing seems to be overproduced.
Just let the guys say what’s on their mind.

They used to do F1. And I miss it.

Chris Guardiano June 28, 2023 at 12:48 am

@NoviRanger23 especially since all ESPN does is simply use the Sky Sports feed which is terrible. Crofty & Brundle are horrible to listen to & Sky focuses too much on the struggles of Mercedes & how good Red Bull (especially Max) is. For those wondering why ESPN doesn’t use their own commentators or send their own camera crews to races it is because they want to save money & get easy ratings by catering F1 to the average sports fan instead of the hardcore one. It’s hypocritical of ESPN to do this especially since with the SRX coverage that is going to start in a few weeks, they are using their own commentators in Allan Bestwick & James Hinchcliffe (though those two basically came over from CBS when the SRX switched networks).

The post race show was really just a factor of the weather causing the race to start at broadcast start, thus allowing more time at the end. Normally we have that 35 minutes of bs before the green flag and whatever is left (often nothing) for post race. I think we’ll see the typical stale formula back sooner than we know it.

Reply
JGR4LIFE June 28, 2023 at 3:04 am

@Tcottong I would like for NASCAR to jump right into the race kind of like what F1 does. For example if a race starts at 9am for F1 the lights is out at 9:05. If it was NASCAR the green flag would wave 30 minutes after it’s on the air.

1. They treat us with a level of intelligence FOX treats fans like kids
2.Criticizing and praising drivers and teams and not just praising like FOX does
3. They have incredibly passionate people in the commentary booth and the people behind the scenes

S.KullRandom June 27, 2023 at 11:32 pm

I beg to differ with the booth. Replace Rick Allen with Allen Bestwick and the statement stands. Also, now would be the time for Fox to restructure and stop obsessing over and treating us like… you know

Compared to Fox, both the commentators and the broadcast itself are way better than Fox was, as there was more in depth race analysis and less Whopper ads.

NBC is miles better than FOX. NBC treats NASCAR like a real sport. FOX treats it like a gimmick. Plus NBC has a level of professionalism that FOX just doesn’t have.

NBC actually takes it seriously

This. It’s not hard to comprehend. This isn’t wrestling. Story lines and drama happen organically when the stakes are raised.

No they don’t, last weekend was the worst I ever saw, they could not keep the camera on the action. missed most of the race.

NBC is not a “lesser of two evils” as some try to paint them. They take the broadcast seriously, and are genuinely informative about the sport, Fox cannot claim that. Can they be better? Sure they can be, but they are a good option.

Side note: Worth noting that the post-race coverage on NBC was mostly because of the moved up start time and fast race pace. It was originally going to be Peacock exclusive post race but NBC needed to fill the remaining 40 minutes of race slot time. If Chicago ends up being a crash fest I won’t count on NBC showing post race. With that said, it was indeed a breathe of fresh air.

I could still see that happening though. The are basically in the slot time of Nightly News if they weren’t the post race would be short.

Only flaw I saw with the broadcast was that we couldn’t hear Jr./Burton when they were outside at the beginning of the race. However I did like them walking down the pits with the cars running. That’s great

I heard that it was 50/50. Some people could hear him others couldn’t. Unfortunately you were the one who couldn’t and it really does suck

Reply
Tim Mann June 27, 2023 at 11:55 pm

Primarily Burton, but unfortunately Jr. too… when they get excited, they hit a register that is just not pleasant on the ears. Not a hater, but I am not the only one who feels this way. I would not be sad to see Burton go, but overall, agreed that NBC’s coverage felt better than Fox’s.

@Tim Mann maybe turn it down? Idk why peoples audios sound different.

Reply
Chris Young June 28, 2023 at 12:49 pm

They were broadcasting from the end of pit row for the first stage (I believe that is how long Dale Jr. And Jeff Burton did that), then went to the booth. But yes it was difficult to hear them at times. You heard more of the engines roaring by than the broadcasters themselves.

While watching the Xfinity race, I was expecting Rick Allen to scream, “Aggressive goes around “ several times during that crash festival.

NBC has definitely improved since 2020 but there are still things that they need to improve on. The first thing is that they need to stop booting races to cable. One of FOX’s small advantages is that when a race starts on FOX, it usually ends on FOX and not on FS1 or FS2 but if a race gets close to exceeding its time slot on NBC, it gets booted to USA or CNBC. The second thing is that they need to find a way to improve TV ratings. Although they don’t get the Daytona 500, the other races compared to FOX’s are generally lower in viewership. The final thing is that they need to have all of their races available on Peacock. It makes no sense to only do a sporadic number of races on Peacock during their half of the year. Besides that, their broadcasts are solid compared to FOX’s terrible quality but I could see FOX making some improvements in the next few years.

Hayden Drew June 28, 2023 at 1:50 am

They have the championship race and still cant get good enough viewership. Thats a phoenix problem though

If we get an actual legit videogame company to make a Nascar game, I would love it if they could get the NBC broadcast team in the game to read out the starting grid of Races and we have the NBC Race Ticker at the top of the screen

I liked both Fox and NBC equally up to a year ago. I think it was in the first NBC race of 2021 in the new car where they explained and showed the locking pin on the single lug tires. Blew my mind that Fox didn’t show it at all or explain it all that well. NBC shows the toe links and explains them as well. Just the realization that that is what everyone was talking about on Fox. Another thing, Fox virtual cutaway car SUCKS. They have a 3D animated car then move to a 2D screen to explain whats happening. NBC actually shows a 3D cutaway virtual car.

Reasons why I love NBC Broadcast

1.) it’s summer break

2.) it’s the summer stretch, all of the best races IMO

3.) the excitement of the broadcast

4.) it’s has a better product consistently

NBC does great with it’s motorsports coverage across the board. I think their Indycar team in particular is exceptional.

Indycar/ IMSA broadcast are professional analytical, and YES they cover more than just lead. I watched a lot Lemans on Motortrend they only covered the lead class. Like the GTE class winning corvette team, made up 2 laps but didn’t get hardly any attention. But NBC’s IMSA coverage on the contrary, gives attention to all the classes and good battles on the track.

Mike Manning June 28, 2023 at 12:51 am

You hit the nail on the head with this video. Especially with the second NBC critique. They can take breaks to give viewers time to process everything and/or simply just listen to the cars. That’s probably the only thing FOX does better than NBC. People talking constantly during the coverage is kind of annoying in my opinion. Other than that, I believe NBC genuinely is great!

I really like that they have their post race stuff no matter what. It’s nice when they do a post race show and have the time to be able to properly close out the show. Even if it ends up on peacock or something.
