It is really incredible that Shane Van Gisbergen won his first race on his first NASCAR start

The Toyotas did a great job of taking the fastest cars and throwing them into the barriers.

Reply
J July 3, 2023 at 2:18 am

Also caused two cautions when SVG had it in the bag. He earned this win multiple times.

Reply
James Lucas July 3, 2023 at 6:21 am

They missed the fastest car though. SVG fastest lap was almost a full second quicker than the next fastest driver! He was in a different league to the rest of the field.

Reply
J July 3, 2023 at 6:44 am

@James Lucas well yes I’m not sure that was the point of the comment. I think they meant they had a chance to win early on in the race before they wrecked. Either way. Best driver and team won the race today and that was great to see. He’s got some crazy talent and I can’t wait to see him back in Nascar. He’s so good, I wouldn’t be surprised if he won a championship in his first couple years in cup.

Even if the Toyotas didn’t throw it away, that trackhouse car was on rails, weren’t going to best SVG, he’s too strong

Reply
Bell UH1H Huey July 3, 2023 at 2:23 pm

@Olly’s FishingSVG wasn’t beating Bell and Reddick till midpack catastrophes happen.

SVG has always been kick arse. For those who don’t know of his talent, search him up, you’ll be very impressed with his calibre of driving.

Reply
Trealos Gaming July 3, 2023 at 2:37 am

From the highlights, he has no fear diving into corners. Ate up the gap, made passes, then gapped the rest. Very good driver

Reply
Nick Power July 3, 2023 at 3:47 am

From rally to Supercars he is the real deal.

I just want to race cars July 3, 2023 at 3:47 am

There are a lot of highlights to watch. Even though II am Canadian, I have loved V8 Supercars for years & have been following SVG’s career since the SP Tools/Stone Brothers Racing Ford Falcon days.

The Dude is a absolute beast behind the wheel no matter what he drives. So awesome to see him succeed today .

Kinda wish the Supercars & NASCAR platforms were this similar when Ambrose came over. He would have had even more success during his time is NASCAR.

Reply
Gaz3801 July 3, 2023 at 4:16 am

@I just want to race cars Here in Australia we all wished the platforms were similar ! I would like to see the same thing happen here in Oz, bring over a seasoned NASCAR racer and drop him into a Supercar. Last time we had an American and a Canadian in our cars was at Bathurst back in 2019 (Alexander Rossi/James Hinchcliffe)… We have also had the likes of Tommy Kendall and also Max Wilson drive.

Reply
J July 3, 2023 at 2:04 am

Unbelievable talent. After your last year in AUS please race here full time. One of the greatest wins we have ever seen.

Reply
Small Bike Stuff July 3, 2023 at 2:18 am

SVG is an absolute legend. A lot of Kiwi’s and Aussies aren’t surprised at the outcome. The support from a lot of die hard nascar fans for SVG is refreshing to see too!

Reply
J Daniel July 3, 2023 at 2:39 am

Never heard of SVG but I think you would have a hard time finding any Nascar or motorsports fan that wouldnt want to see a first race/first win scenario anywhere.
The guy is a legend

WOW what a Race! Think the wet conditions made it even more exciting. The Chicago skyline in the background, a historic win, plus that Chicago style traffic jam @ lap 50 lol.

Been watching NASCAR 40 years. That was an absolute ghetto stormin’ great race. That Kiwi is an animal of a driver. Hopefully those instincts serve him well on short tracks and super speedways.

Reply
Adam Mitchell July 3, 2023 at 4:02 am

hes a gun drifter and loves the rally too. Man is fast in anything, Think he will go alright. His been showing us Aussies how its done for years.

Reply
Andrew Armstrong July 3, 2023 at 6:03 am

He’s basically Jim Richards reincarnate. And that’s the highest praise you’ll get from me.

Reply
French onion July 3, 2023 at 8:18 am

I mean this is easy mode for drivers across the pond against these Nascar drivers. They all pretty much suck on road courses. Ambrose used to gap them on road courses too. The super speed ways are different though. Not much driving talent needed on those tracks, but the pits stops are critical and having your car just survive from being taken out in a wreak till the finish. Also, having the the fastest motor is critical on speedways. If his car is down just a handful of horsepower its gonna be tougher. Drivers across the pond understand how important it is to master braking though. Americans lack this

Reply
Andrew Armstrong July 3, 2023 at 8:28 am

@French onion If an Antipodean was going to master a NASCAR on ovals, I would put money on SVG being it.

Reply
Rob Sykes July 3, 2023 at 2:28 am

Best race i’ve seen in years..Nascar SO needs street courses…this was goosebump inducing racing.

Reply
Adam Mitchell July 3, 2023 at 3:57 am

the rest of the world will watch it then too…

Reply
Agenda filled TV July 3, 2023 at 5:05 am

Yeah more street courses but I dunno if double wide start will work or double wide restarts. it would work on road courses with wide turns for the 1st half of the lap but even then it’s cringy

Reply
Agenda filled TV July 3, 2023 at 5:07 am

Double wide starts n restarts would work if the street courses were a bit wider in turns

Reply
The Sollys July 3, 2023 at 9:24 am

You guys need to watch some Supercar action, that’s par for the course mate.

Reply
Rebel Soul July 3, 2023 at 10:27 am

Nascar does have road courses, street courses will be tough to fit into the schedule. What tracks do we drop to add more road courses?

Despite the wet weather, the late start and 1/4 of the laps cut away, this was definitely ENTERTAINING as hell! Consider giving Sebring road course a date, NASCAR…

Reply
Doug Scott July 3, 2023 at 2:49 am

WOW! I’ve never even heard of Shane Van Gisbergen, but Congrats to him both for winning the first ever Chicago street race and his debut Nascar race. That has to be an extremely rare combination. Well,I guess I’m going to have to eat my words after all my previous prediction about this race.

LHudson21201 July 3, 2023 at 5:38 am

Do yourself a favour and watch Shane rip through the field from 17th to 1st with a broken collarbone. He’s an unreal talent.
Race 3 of the 2021 supercars championship

Reply
Chewy July 3, 2023 at 6:39 am

You need to see him in supercars. It’s like he is driving in a different category some days. He has insane over taking skill and an incredibly high racing IQ. His best achievement that helps him win a lot is how he manages tyres. He always does it so much better then those around him

Reply
Adam Moreira July 3, 2023 at 7:47 am

Veteran V8 Supercars driver…champion in 2016, 2021, and 2022. Shane van Gisbergen is a legend in that series with nothing more to prove down under than to three-peat for his 4th championship.

Reply
northcackalacky July 3, 2023 at 2:57 am

I just knew that a Chicago street race would be an epic failure!! I was wrong!
Bell, Truex, and Reddick were amazing, but who knew that Gisbergen would make everyone on that insane coarse look less than elite? I was definitely wrong, Nascar put on a great show today!

It was a really good showing considering the adversary and when combined with the atmosphere of the city made it so cool! In person at turn 1 I could hear the cars echo off the skyscrapers at turns 7 through 10.

You could see it, he had the tactics of the track so well memorized. He figured out where he can give ground to make ground, beautiful driving. Once he could sniff the lead he was basically an executioner.

As an Aussie who has visited Chicago, it’s cool to watch NASCAR down the very streets we walked not too long ago. Unbelievable to see SVG win on debut.
