I won’t lie, I had my doubts for this race. But I was always willing to give it a chance and it was actually a good race. I’m so happy SVG won too. Hope to see him again

Someone needs to tell SVG that if he comes full time into NASCAR, then he is fully welcomed!

I’d welcome him with open arms. I would love Trackhouse to let him run at an oval race later this year. Or maybe even the 500 next year if he’s able.

He said his post race interview he’d be open to coming to NASCAR full-time after next year when he finishes his other series

He needs to go to indycar.

Reply
Tristan Boykett July 3, 2023 at 5:59 am

He is a circut racer not an oval racer

J July 3, 2023 at 6:22 am

@Boston Warrior48 anyone who cared enough to pay attention heard that too. Great to hear him say that.

This race went better than I could have ever imagined. Shane van Gisbergen winning is the icing on the cake. I would definitely love to see him do more Nascar races.

Awesome race!!! Loved it.

The FIRST Cup driver since 1963 (1951 if you don’t count qualifying races) to win on debut! How awesome is that!

Reply
smtbigelow July 3, 2023 at 9:53 am

So why are you leaving out the other four drivers?

Reply
J July 3, 2023 at 2:09 am

Real Nascar fans want you here. Please come back after your last year in v8 supercars.
Legendary win.

Dude is legit. You don’t just slice your way through a NASCAR field like that. WOW!

Slash racing productions July 3, 2023 at 2:58 am

Yes you can, they can all only turn left, skilless

Reply
Aston Culf July 3, 2023 at 3:00 am

@Slash racing productionsbro is not paying attention this was a street race in changing conditions, actually looked like a supercars race

Reply
TeaJay July 3, 2023 at 3:01 am

@Slash racing productionstwo f1 champions have failed to get a top 15 in the past year on multiple attempts. Nascar drivers are far from skilless

Reply
GeechieDan July 3, 2023 at 3:05 am

@TeaJay1 drivers race cars totally different than Cup cars- they both have steering wheels and 4 tires and that’s about the only similarities – whereas Australian Supercars are the most similar to Cup cars.

Jared July 3, 2023 at 3:12 am

@Slash racing productionsTell you what kiddo go to your local short track and have a go see how much skill it takes to “only turn left”. Keep bringing that small D energy bud. Lol

NASCAR needed this. Other than the weather this was a really good show.

Reply
Lionel Hutz July 3, 2023 at 5:30 am

Honestly the weather sorta helped. A wet track totally changed the dynamic…and the late start forcing street racing in low light with a sunset going down past the Chicago skyline made it epic. All the NASCAR fans here in the city seem to be having a great time.

Reply
J July 3, 2023 at 6:33 am

@Lionel Hutz exactly. If you had the patience to watch through the cautions, one of the best races in decades. Especially with who won.
18th to 1st with only one pit cycle to take the lead on a street course. In his first Nascar race. Legend.

J July 3, 2023 at 7:18 am

@Lionel Hutz haha I’m sure. Luckily happened on the slowest corner.

Weather was one of the reasons Shane won

Nick Chana July 3, 2023 at 2:37 am

I really hope this pokes other international drivers to attempt NASCAR

Real talent boys, I’m so happy I witnessed this

Reply
Wyatt Holo July 3, 2023 at 2:44 am

Congratulations to Shane for his first win in what would be his first start! For the first time in 60 years a nascar driver wins in his first start! Everyone give a round of applause to Shane! Congratulations to Shane!

Shane NZ is so proud of you in everything you have done in and for motorsport in NZ. You will go down as one of the great NZ racers like Murph, Hulme, Jim Richards, Scott Dixon, McLaren. You were already a legend in NZ and OZ and now the world will be introduced to that SVG magic.

Reply
Kurz_Weber July 3, 2023 at 4:53 am

SVG is Elite. He’s in a top tier of racers that NZ has produced – guys that could race ANYTHING and be fast. I’m thinking McLaren, Hulme, Dixon (Top level Sportscars and Indy500) and better than the mercurial Scotty Mac (V8SC, Indy and now Sportcars) and Brendon Hartley (F1 and Sportscars)… I think he’s above gentleman Jim and Murphy because of the sheer number of platforms he can do it on with little experience.

He’d definitely be on my Kiwi version of Mt Rushmore – though I don’t think 3 faces is enough for the talent that little bunch of islands produces!!

Max Flashheart July 3, 2023 at 9:45 am

@What would I know You know he must be great if the Aussies are trying to claim him lol

Reply
Justin St John July 3, 2023 at 3:08 am

Well done SVG. When he goes to NASCAR because he will no doubt about it I will start watching more races.

Reply
fernando ueno July 3, 2023 at 3:15 am

I’d like to see SVG at Watkins Glen or another road course most drivers are used to. Just imagine if he does and just beats everyone again

Reply
Kyle July 3, 2023 at 1:00 pm

He’d tear up The Glen.

Slippery Sausage July 3, 2023 at 3:37 am

For those that aren’t aware, Shane did a season in Sprintcars here in NZ this year. Got a win down in Palmerston North Speedway, he grew up racing Quarter Midgets at Western Springs, so he has some oval experience already. He also holds the fastest lap at nearly every pay to race go-cart track in NZ lol. Not to mention his Rally experience and success at Enduros, the guy is a machine. I’m biased but he’s got to be one of the top all-round drivers in the world.

Reply
Reymond St. James July 3, 2023 at 4:02 am

And he won the Bathurst 1000 *twice*, including Holden’s final win!

Reply
Slippery Sausage July 3, 2023 at 4:09 am

@Reymond St. James And the last ever race at Pukekohe!

Reply
Peter Hoare July 3, 2023 at 6:01 am

He’d race a motor-mower. He LIVES to drive, compete and win

Reply
Noobkx July 3, 2023 at 9:43 am

You might be biased but it’s still the truth. 😀 Dude is a top 3 driver on the planet right now and probably going to be the GOAT of his era when it’s looked back at because of versatility and success with other disciplines.

Justin Parsell July 3, 2023 at 2:05 pm

Man this is awesome!! Congratulations Shane Van on your first ever nascar race!
