NASCAR is back at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend which will no doubt reignite the NASCAR fanbase’s debate on whether or not the Brickyard 400 should make a triumphant return or remain dormant for longer or indefinitely. Today I want to look at both sides of this argument and see who makes some good points in this conversation. So let’s look at the great Brickyard 400 debate.

Do you want the Brickyard 400 to return?
Yes
No questions
ASAP
Yes
No keep a Indianapolis Road Course for NASCAR
I’ve been wanting to see this in here since Ty Gibbs will be testing at Indianapolis oval
“GRANDPAA THEY’RE TRYING TO KILL ME!!! MY TIRES WON’T LAST!!!”
“TYYYY THAT’S WHY THEY’RE TESTING!!!!”
Indy: The track that will bring about a civil war in the fanbase.
I think they should do what they do with Charlotte. It’s a way to keep the admired road course on the circuit well also allowing for NASCAR to bring back a storied tradition. The next gen has improved oval racing thus far, perhaps the Indy oval will be no exception.
NextGen has performed well only on intermediates with multiple grooves. Single groove intermediates like Texas are still just as unwatchable as they were with the COT/Gen6 chassis, and Indy is 100% a single groove track.
Odd numbered laps on Oval, even numbered laps on the Road course.
What if u had to run an equal number of laps on the road course and the oval, but how u do it is up to ur strategy?
@Angelo Garcia Nahhh. Too easy to adjust halfway through for the second part you’d run, whether road or oval. The odd/even keeps the field more level and setups more neutral. If anything we add in even numbered cars run clockwise, odd numbered cars run counter clockwise.
What killed the oval racing at Indy was the tires. My question is this does Goodyear have a good enough handle on the car to actually build a great Indy oval tire or would they have another debacle at Indy.
For the Indy oval, NASCAR should use Firestones.
@BNSF1995 Not gonna happen as long as Goodyear is the exclusive supplier.
I was at that horrid race. 2008.
I think with the new aero and horsepower package of this next gen car it would be interesting to see how that would play out on the oval but idk
I think there’s a third option for NASCAR. First they need to fix the short track package. Once they get that fixed, then they should take the race to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
I wanna see Iowa in the cup series. It’s a fast little short track
That would require getting rid of that fancy sports car suspension and making the cars not as durable
If anything the next time they do the road course they should run it the opposite way that way the first turn isn’t a 90⁰ right turn
I agree
Hot take: next year we should run a double header. Think about it: both sides win, and we can make a definite decision on the fate of the brickyard. Plus, it’d be a super prestigious weekend and viewership would be HUGE.
IRP > Any version of Indy
The progressive banking and multiple preferred lines makes for some of the most unique and exciting racing you’ll find on any oval.
I like the every other year idea, keeps things from getting stale.
The 400 needs to come back. Simply look at how few drivers won that race that were not already, or would go on to be, Cup Series Champions in their career.
The biggest, and really the main reason the 400 fell on such hard times was the ownership. The Hulmans never wanted the 400 to outshine their baby; the 500 in May.
I do think they should do something like they did for the Bristol dirt race. Kinda like bring it back for a couple years and see how it goes. Give it a couple years/chances to see how the next gen car react to it. If it’s successful, great they should keep it. If not, perhaps alternate it or keep only the road course.
Has Goodyear in the recent years figured out the tire situation?
Also I like the insanity of the road course races here. Watched so many of the oval races over the year and worked security there and saw its decline. If you want the oval you have to fix the core issues.
I really like the road courses because you have to drive the track and not just pace around and around. I never minded indy oval because of its history/spectacle.
thank you for all of the content man, I love it! Found you through Eric’s channel and the NWP. Will you be at Kansas fall race this year? Would love to see you out there
As someone who’s gone to both, the RC is an absolute blast to see in person. It’s great “entertainment”. That being said, it’s only due to the wild restarts – after that it gets strung out and no different (in my opinion) than the oval, becoming a strung out strategy race. I love the history of the Brickyard and really want to see it back on the oval. Stock cars flying down the long straights into a 90 degree corner is just badass, even if it is hard to make passes. Not every race has to be 3 wide nonstop or have dive bombs every corner.
Indy resident here, one thing that gets overlooked in this discussion is that the track is under new ownership now and with Penske at the helm the track has had drastic changes for the better overall. I feel that the 400 is viable and the fact that the track is now a much better venue than it was under the Hulman family.
