@Timechanger ! not only that, but there was one (possibly two) drivers that pit a lap before him, so they probably didn’t think much of it. I mean, he didn’t even run the dedicated max fuel run that NASCAR dictated on air so it seems a bit off. That being said, a veteran driver to some degree should have thought it was a bit odd that the crew chief would say 3 laps after a flipped switch considering it is pretty common sense in the garage (for the lack of a better word, since not all obvious to fans), that about 7.5 miles after a flipped switch is a HUGE stretch. On a standard mile and a half, you barely get two, yet here they were confident with three? Yes, there is off throttle time, but not nearly enough to garnish that extra half lap. So though it isn’t Elliott’s fault in totality, but it would have been a 500IQ play to question the call. Not only is that the bad part of the strategy, but knowing these cars pit stops are quicker, and an “empty to full” tank of fuel is a longer stop than the four tires alone, he would have to sit on pit road for an extra 2 seconds, giving him enough time to pick a booger. Either not enough fuel was added the first stop, or someone done effff’d the calculations. either or both make sense. Saying “two passes” on the radio after flicking the switch is also vague, because the other question is…. when did he flip the switch exactly? Very likely on the first 25 percent of the course if he died just after the esses. Interesting to think about.
Part of this falls to the fact that they’ve been stage racing for so long. Haven’t even had to think about when you stop on road courses for years now.
I know I ain’t a crew chief but I was questioning what Alan was doing as he had Chase out there for about 40 laps before he ran out of gas. I’m a Bowman fan btw.
NOTE: Something I forgot to mention in this video is that the No. 9 team is currently IN the owners playoffs. They are 30 points ahead of the No. 23 team going into Daytona. So while Chase Elliott may be OUT of the drivers playoffs currently, at least the No. 9 team is holding on to an owners playoff spot, which matters more for end-of-season payouts.
Give it a rest Eric. We get it. Your driver screwed up. Missing races because he broke his leg, snowboarding. Missing a race because he lost his temper and got suspended.
@WhatAboutTheBee well that doesn’t really change the fact that he’s in the owners playoffs. He literally said that he’s not in the playoffs. Did you read it????
I think the best plan of action long term for the 9 team might be to try and rebuild during the playoffs. If Chase doesn’t win next week, the best move I think is to fire AG and replace him with someone else mid season. One candidate I think might be successful is Tom Gray. He is currently the lead engineer for the 9 team and served as interim crew chief when Gustafson stepped away due to the penalty earlier this year, notably getting a 2nd place finish off strategy at Richmond with Josh Berry.
I agree, Gustafson has cost several wins with bad calls, and this was the worst…and he’s not consistently given Chase fast cars, and when Chase has a fast car at the beginning Gustafson doesn’t keep up with the track changing and Chase gets a bad finish.
Rick Allen getting worse. His attempt at a joke about Austin Dillon’s throw of his helmet at Kyle Larson being “overhand” and that it would have been more appropriate if it was thrown “underhand” for the “Go Bowling” race at the Glen was just awful.
If I had a nickel for every time Byron dominated a race causing everyone to be up in arms about the Next Gen car, I’d have 2 nickels… I’m not saying the criticism isn’t warranted, but it’s weird that it happened twice though right?
I heard a great analogy that Jordan Bianchi used after a road race last season when comparing this product to the Gen 6, and I’ll paraphrase it but it goes like this:
“The old car on road courses was like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. You know that the peg won’t fit in, but it is damn interesting and fun to see all the ways you could try to make it fit. The NextGen is a round peg that goes right into the round hole. It just goes in, nothing really remarkable about how it goes into the round hole since you know it will.”
The higher speeds ment more aero grip less reliance on mechanical grip equals a snoozer of a race. Hopefully the roval is like Indy with more mechanical grip less aero
I had a feeling Elliot was’t going to win. My main reason was because of the other bubble drivers who’d be fighting to qualify for the chase. My second reason was the other drivers who just want wins or extra points like Hamlin or McDowell. Elliot was going to have a tough battle but I never expected gas to be the final nail in his run. Neither did I expect the other bubble drivers to not compete well.
There was plenty of strategy in this race with mixed results. Brad Keselowski had one, it paid off as he was able to make it to the playoffs. Chase Elliott had one, did not work out well at all as he ran out of gas midway through the race. So in a ways, it’s normal road course racing. What did you want to see?
@Pvt Donut I don’t think you can really call year number 2 a career year, he’s definitely got room for improvement and FRM looks like they’ll keep him around long term. I think he’s going to help build the 38 team to be an eventual contender
we’re sleeping on the season stenhouse is having. i know daytona helped but that car has been consistent, and he hasnt made mistakes. he could be like a 2020 austin dillon and actually be competitive in the round of 16.
Bubba’s best road course drive (yes I know not finish) at a road course based off of him turning pure speed. Awesome to see someone improve at their weakness!
@Christian Russellwhy do you people comment on everything about this man

Byron is officially an elite driver now
Yep. No matter how many people say he’s “boring” he finds a way to win.
Absolutely hes came a long way
Absolute w for Byron fans
He was already elite before todays win, but this win at a road course just cemented it further.
I cannot…. CANNOT believe that Elliott ran out of fuel. How do you make that mistake?!?!
It was not Elliot’s fault. His crew chief said after flipping the switch he’d have 3 laps. Entering the 2nd lap he ran out. That is 100% on his crew
Have an idiot for a crew chief. That’s how

Chase Elliott needed a win today but Alan Gustafson screwed it up with that awful pit strategy what was he thinking
He wasn’t. I think he just got overwhelmed and lost sight of the ball. It happens to the best of us.
It would not of mattered he still didn’t have the speed to contend
Just like Kyle Busch and Ben beshore

Chase didn’t make the playoffs. Its done.
Unless he wins at Daytona.
No pressure.
At all.
@WhatAboutTheBee well that doesn’t really change the fact that he’s in the owners playoffs. He literally said that he’s not in the playoffs. Did you read it????
@WhatAboutTheBeebro his driver is retired lmao. Obviously new around here if you think he’s an Elliott Simp.
@KFB nation Sure, the car is in the owners championship. 7/26 races were NOT driven by Chase.
@KFB nation chase isn’t in the owners championship, by the way, just the car. It doesn’t matter who drives it

AG needs to go.

So happy no new winner. Would have liked to see Harvick get a regular season win, but so glad he’s locked in.
The most entertaining moment of this race was Rick Allen calling Ty Gibbs Ty Dillon.
Rick Allen getting confused and corrected by Steve or Dale Jr is pretty common. I wish he would just stop talking.
I believe he made a mistake about three or four times during today’s race.
Rick Allen getting worse. His attempt at a joke about Austin Dillon’s throw of his helmet at Kyle Larson being “overhand” and that it would have been more appropriate if it was thrown “underhand” for the “Go Bowling” race at the Glen was just awful.
I like Rick Allen and think he does a good job.. BUT I have noticed this lately. Not sure what’s throwing him off.
Can’t wait for Daytona it’s going to be crazy…
If I had a nickel for every time Byron dominated a race causing everyone to be up in arms about the Next Gen car, I’d have 2 nickels… I’m not saying the criticism isn’t warranted, but it’s weird that it happened twice though right?
How is it any different than MTJ dominating 95% of the races he won?
I guess because he’s A Hendrick driver and isn’t putting up Jeff Gordon 1998 stats every year.

The Next Gen is a road course car. But I think it also evened out the playing field because of the symmetrical body, lower HP., and IRS.
The higher speeds ment more aero grip less reliance on mechanical grip equals a snoozer of a race. Hopefully the roval is like Indy with more mechanical grip less aero
@Easy E Networkit’s a corvette with different bodies. Everything in its design is from the last front engine corvette chassis.

I expected him to be top ten in Q trim when he was fast at Indy and even Richmond in Q trim. Then the long run speed being off was more shocking,

Both FRM cars were fast today. Gilliland finished 11th. Also, Rockefeller got the 42 a top 20. That’s gotta feel like a win
I feel like Gilliland is having a career year.
I don’t know the stats, but I think I’ve seen him up in the top 15 a lot this year.
@Pvt Donut I don’t think you can really call year number 2 a career year, he’s definitely got room for improvement and FRM looks like they’ll keep him around long term. I think he’s going to help build the 38 team to be an eventual contender

thugga is horrible
And only a fluky yellow kept him out of the top ten on a parade race. No matter how many weirdo haters want to deny it, he’s a top driver.
@Christian Russellwhy do you people comment on everything about this man

I knew coming into this season that everyone was underestimating Byron’s potential!
