Penalties in NASCAR are some of the biggest game changers in the history of the sport. They can make or break a season. Throughout NASCAR's history there have been penalties handed out that changed the outcomes of entire seasons. From Ryan Blaney's most recent (now rescinded) penalty from Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2023 to a championship crushing season ender in 1950. It has been a part of NASCAR since the start of NASCAR but has not gotten any less painful for those involved. So let's look back at 4 major penalties that changed the NASCAR championship…

What are some of the biggest game changing NASCAR penalties you can think of?
Spingate, Kyle Busch parked for 2, Chase Elliott parked for 1
@Motorsport Mike100%
Hamlin 2020 “Dont pass him Jones”
Spingate
Chase Elliott getting parked for a race this year because of NASCAR’s Trump – Denny Hamlin.
Mark Martin in 1990 still breaks my heart to this day
AS A DALE EARNHARDT FAN IT DOESN’T BREAK MINE
That Mark Martin penalty changed history forever. If he has those points, he wins his first title, Earnhardt doesn’t have 7 titles after 1994 and he’s no longer in talks for the greatest of all time with Petty and Johnson.
Oh no he’s definitely still in that conversation, as most people know that titles alone don’t define greatness.
@GoodOl’RollTell that to Denny Hamlin haters
@cehamlet89He had opportunities to win it, but did fumble. However, 3 Daytona 500’s are better than a title IMO
@A Loving German Flag It’s like saying if winning Le Mans 3 times is better than winning the whole WSPC/WSC/WEC championship
@Razorgenuinely true though, most people hold Le Man on a higher regard than winning the wec lol.
What perfect timing for this vid Considering that Ryan Blaney’s DQ got revoked and his 6th Place Finish reinstated alongside the 8 stage points he scored during that race
2017 Loganos encumbered richmond win will always stick out to me. I dont think he lost any points but the collapse that team had after that penalty, after coming close to a championship the year prior, was so hard to watch. Seeing him drop out of the points come the playoffs. One of the best modern drivers not even making it cause of a penalty.
Agree. We are still mad about that.
I think it’s ridiculous that guys can get disqualified over window fasteners and scotch tape.
Ryan Blaney’s DQ was just rescinded Huh? Glad he has a chance to point his way in now even though that’ll be difficult it’s not impossible.
Glad Blaney got his postion/points back
I would say 2018 or 19 Kevin Harvick winning at Texas and then the wind being encumbered because of that window issue that they had in the current season instead of being safe to the final four he had to make sure he was in and on points
I think the biggest impact for Harvick was that he didnt have Rodney Childress for Homestead, so maybe Harvick had the best car that day but they never nailed the setup…
I am living in Bill Rexford’s home town. Oddly I went to a presentation last Tuesday about his career.
The volunteer fire chief and his daughter are family to Bill.
Bill Rexford is recognized in the Chautauqua County hall of fame. He still is the youngest driver to ever win a championship in Nascar.
Now that I know more about Bill Rexford I am joining in trying to get him at least recognized in the hall of fame down south.
My tiny town isn’t recognized for just recognized for the longest running town picnic in the United States. We also know that Bill a nascar champion was born here.
At 46 this story blew my mind. Please as you mentioned him try to get him recognized.
Thank you for what you do.
Love how quick and consistent you release content with what’s currently going on. Dinner video rotation ty !
As a kid, I definitely remember Dale Jr’s penalty & being upset about it because I liked the paint scheme & wanted him to win the title. However the biggest motorsport penalty that I remember the most came from F1 in 2007 where McLaren was accused of spying (known as Spygate) on other teams to gain a competitive advantage & was thrown out of the Constructor’s championship, though their two drivers were still allowed to compete for the driver’s title. Now the entire results of the 2008 championship in F1 is being called into question because of another controversy & that is “Crashgate” where Renault told Nelson Piquet Jr to crash on purpose during the Singapore GP so that Fernando Alonso could win. At first, no penalties were given out, though a year later, Renault team boss Flavio Briatore was given a lifetime ban from F1 for his involvement. Because this is being questioned, it could result in Felipe Massa being named 2008 F1 champion instead of Lewis Hamilton 15 years after it happened largely because any change in the standings will result in Renault being DQ’d from the final 4 races that year & Massa being given those points especially with the Singapore & Japanese GP’s.
I was about to say yea chastain still beats him by 1 point since the 6 was dq and gave chastain 2 more points. Then you mentioned Elliot. But Elliot also would’ve raced more aggressively. His crew chief said over the radio to just let people go since they didn’t want to get spun
If Dale Jr would have won the 2004 championship instead of Kurt Busch, Busch would have been out of NASCAR around 2011-2012. He only got a ride with finch and started races based on his past championship provisional
This post is just one of the reasons I subscribe to your channel! Keep it up Mr Berg(?)!
I wanna mention Byron’s penalty last season dur8ng Texas when he dumped Hamlin, and I got resended, and due to that larson got eliminated but if It didn’t get resended, larson would’ve made it to Phoenix that year
loved seeing the footage from the 50s. Really cool stuff.
