@B&L Panthers no Patrick, mayonnaise is not an instrument. Horse radish is not an instrument either.

i think it would be fine if the officials told ross not to wreck the Championship 4 drivers at risk of getting severe penalties but if they said in some way to not race them for the win then that would be a problem like that should never happen. To be honest i was more worried Blaney was gonna do something stupid more than Ross like if he poked the bear that is Ross Chastain then in my opinion he deserves whatever is coming to him anyways and that bump he gave him got real close there

I think you are correct about the official telling the 1 and 12 spotters to cool their drivers down. Roger Penske, in an interview on Sirius did the same with Blaney. I also suspect that Blaney could have passed Chastain but was told to see the “big Picture” by Penske that winning the race was not as important as the championship.

Reply
George Paiva November 9, 2023 at 3:46 pm

So in that light do you tell a boxer to calm down while in a fight

Reply
Lin Hunnicutt November 9, 2023 at 3:50 pm

Penske did tell Blaney to calm down because he needed to see the big picture and flipping Chastain off and ramming his back bumper repeatedly wasn’t gonna get him anywhere in fact, that probably made Chastain that much more resolved to keep him behind him. The big picture was the other competitors in the championship were behind him so you know he needs to calm down as for the other not that’s BS.

Gary Jackson November 9, 2023 at 4:45 pm

@georgepaiva7496 Different situation different scenario. In a championship boxing match there are only 2 competitors, not 40!

There was no need for Blaney to win the race, just finish in front of Larson and Byron. Yeah, winning the race while winning the Championship is cool, the Championship pays millions of dollars. The race win does not. With that at stake, you have to race smart.

@Gary Jackson Having playoff drivers running against non playoff driver’s is crap Nascar should come up with something different to that it just turn into a piss poor boring race

From the two perspectives on DBC, I trust Joel’s perspective more than Brett’s. I think it’s more reasonable to believe they simply reminded the spotters that they didn’t want it to become a clown show.

The real question is, if it was someone like Truex in the lead, would they have said anything at all?

Reply
tobylou8 November 9, 2023 at 3:26 pm

Probably no because A. He’s a past champion and knows what’s at stake. B. He doesn’t drive as recklessly and carelessly as Chastain. Truex has much more class than Chastain. I think Chastain is looking to replace Hamlin as the villain when Hamlin retires. Just my 2 cents.

Reply
Azeria November 9, 2023 at 3:38 pm

@tobylou8 exactly, and to me that means if there was a warning given to Ross, it’s not because he wasn’t in the champ 4, it’s because he’s Ross.

Reply
Gary Jackson November 9, 2023 at 4:38 pm

@tobylou8I’m sure any none Final 4 or past Champion would have gotten the same reminder. Ross raced everyone clean, but he was going for a win. That’s his job!

The most important thing is to win the race, each race. And then at the end of the season we might look who did the best overall. But the name of the game should be winning.

L Diamondz November 10, 2023 at 11:33 am

Just NASCAR officials being stupid. I’m a Blaney fan, and just wanted to see him win the championship. Didn’t really care if he won the race. Both Blaney and Chastain did what they’re supposed to do. Race.

Sorry Eric, but putting someone in the wall (retaliation or not) is and always will be a dumb thing to do. Especially in a CHAMPIONSHIP race!

Ross Chastain does have a history of being too aggressive. Also Blaney’s chief did tell him too cool off over the radio

Blaney ignored his crew chief but didn’t ignore Penske..Not in this life,

I’ve only been watching NASCAR for a year and a half now, so I don’t know what Ross was like before Trackhouse, but he really doesn’t come off as hotheaded to me. If anything he is usually the one after a race who makes an effort to diffuse any situation with the person he upset by directly talking to them or via the media. Often taking the blame for things that I don’t think were his fault.

It seems to me like he’s cool as a cucumber on track and good at both aero-blocking and passing in the less preferred lines which seems to get a rise out of the short-fused drivers like Hamlin and Blaney.

Thomas November 9, 2023 at 10:25 pm

You’re 100% right and I’ve been a Ross fan since his JD Motorsports days. He’s calm as a cucumber. Rarely gets mad at anybody. Races hard, but doesn’t complain when people race him hard. He’s a very respectable guy.

@Thomasyes!! Remember when that bright red 4 car that we got to use to only seeing as it was lapped 6 times during a race began to stay on the lead lap and finish 12th-15th? That’s when I became a Ross fan as well.

Ross used to be real crazy sometimes. Look up some of his races from previous years. Look up “RC wrecks.” lol.

@Jeremy Harper yup! I was actually at Dover when he made his first Cup start in the #15 car. It’s awesome to see a guy who came from underfunded teams make it to a top level team and become one of the biggest names in the sport. Nobody is more deserving than Ross. He paid his dues for sure.

Reply
Thomas November 10, 2023 at 12:58 pm

@L Diamondz He used to drive a little overly aggressive. But he’s never acted crazy. He’s cool as a cucumber. Unlike Blaney who acts like a complete psycho on his radio.

NAPARacingFan 927 November 9, 2023 at 3:45 pm

This is ridiculous. Chastaon had every right to go win that race just like Blaney did last year in the same race.

Reply
Trevor Cole November 9, 2023 at 3:48 pm

I think the timing of the officials conversation is important. If he went over after Blaney started hitting back I think it stands to reason they’d be concerned about the 12 wrecking the 1 and having to worry about your series champion being penalized. That would be a hard call to make in the closing laps and would potentially call the entire championship into question.

Ryan could finish 2nd and still be the champ, it’s not on Ross to make winning easier for them, or any driver for that matter.

I think both Joel AND Brett AND the NASCAR PR Dude are probably correct in what the NASCAR official said to the 1 spotter.

The official probably went to the 12 spotter and said “hey, just remember, you don’t have to win the race to be champion, so tell Blaney to not be and idiot and get himself wrecked”

The official then went to the 1 spotter and said “Tell Chastain to calm down and not wreck the 12. Back off a little bit, we don’t need a shot-show like trucks.”

You see, that’s not directly telling Chastain to move over and let Blaney win, but something tells me it was a little bit more than just “calm down” to both drivers, especially since I’ve yet to hear any inclination at this point that Chastain was even upset or anything. It sounds more like Blaney was upset and Chastain was just driving for the win.

Now that they are getting the safety issues figured out with the Next Gen car, I fully agree with raising horsepower. This would give drivers more options at short tracks and put more emphasis on driver skill and driving style. As a point of interest, a 2023 Mustang Shelby GT-500 street car has 760HP. This is 90HP more than the current 670 HP that the 2023 NASCAR Mustang runs at most tracks and 210 more than the 550HP package used at superspeedways.

J B November 9, 2023 at 6:36 pm

Isn’t there a rule against not giving 100%? Chastain’s 100% is definitely different than some others. But Ross raced like he should have.

Reply
Chris Burgess November 10, 2023 at 1:57 pm

IMO there are about 30 other drivers out there who would’ve been pissed if he just conceded a victory because Blaney was mad and wanted him to move over for the title. If nascar wants the championship to be decided between only the Championship 4 then those are the only drivers who should be allowed to run the race.

Rex Jenkins November 9, 2023 at 6:54 pm

Well you also have to think of it this way, Hocevar spun heim (intentionally or unintentionally)
And Heim continued and still had a shot at the championship. While when Hiem slammed Hocevar it effectively ended Hocevar’s race and championship hopes. And was blatantly oblivious that it was revenge. Hocevar’s could have been him pushing his truck a little to hard into the corner.

According to Harvick on the Dale Jr Download, all they need to do is change the spacer under the throttle body. Heim definitely got the short end of the deal, he got wrecked, and he went to get Hosevar back for it. Personally, given Hosevar’s history of doing this, he should’ve received a penalty as well because if he doesn’t make these mistakes then, Heim don’t wreck him back. Hosevar will learn next year, when he tries this stuff on say, Kyle Busch or Ross Chastain in the Cup series. The guys got talent, but I seriously don’t think he’s mature enough for Cup yet.

Danny Block November 9, 2023 at 7:44 pm

You guys did mention this on NWP last night in Harvick’s first race at Rockingham in 2001 the driver driving a 24 won the pole, and the driver won the race drove a 1 car, well at Phoenix in Harvick’s final race the driver starting on pole drove a 24 car, and the winner of the race drove a 1 car. That’s incredible fun facts you gave us last night,.

I think Chastain has finally learned how to be aggressive without making contact….he put together a great run , he’s got potential for sure. He’s going to be a great driver.
