NASCAR silly season is an integral part of the sport. With there not being a designated free agency period the loosely termed silly season instead is the name that year round silly season has taken. With this naturally some are better than others but one stands above the rest. The 2007 NASCAR silly season. This is the silliest NASCAR silly season.

1993 to 1994-Ernie Irvan leaves Morgan McClure in a nasty divorce and goes to replace Davey Allison. Geoff Bodine buys the late Alan Kulwicki’s team and Lake Speed goes to Bud Moore. Terry Labonte goes to the #5 which he wins a title with in 1996, and Ricky Rudd starts his own team Rudd Performance Motorsports. Ted Musgrave goes to Roush to drive the 16 replacing Wally Dallenbach who ended up driving the 43 car. This one was the wackiest because I had to buy all new diecast and the best part is Racing Champions had most of them.

It might be recency bias but between the Reddick move to 23XI and KFB leaving JGR for RCR, last year’s silly season was PRETTY DARN SILLY!

Little did we know that Dale Jr moving to HMS and Kyle Busch moving to JGR would have an impact on their careers for the better

With Dale Jr’s big move from DEI to Hendrick and Kyle Busch going to Gibbs it was certainly one of the more well known silly seasons.

It definitely shaped the landscape of NASCAR for the next 15 years. With Kyle going to JGR, Toyota and Gibbs went into a new era of competitiveness and two titles later, KFB has become one of the greatest of his era.

– Truex drove the 1 as a rookie
– Kurt Busch took over the 2
– Scott Wimmer took over the 4
– Clint Bowyer drove the 07 as a rookie
– Denny Hamlin drove the 11 as a rookie
– Sterling Marlin drove the 14
– Paul Menard drove the 15 part time
– JJ Yeley drove the 18 as a rookie
– Jeremy Mayfield got dumped for Elliott Sadler mid season for the 19
– Ken Schrader took over the 21
– Dave Blaney took over the 22
– Jamie McMurray replaced Kurt Busch in the new 26 car
– Elliott Sadler got dumped for David Gilliland mid season for the 38
– David Stremme drove the 40 as a rookie
– Reed Sorensen drove the 41 as a rookie
– Casey Mears took over the 42
– Bobby Labonte took over the 43

2007 will always be one of my favorites, it was my first season watching NASCAR, the addition of the COT, last season of the Gen 4, Jeff Gordon’s ridiculous consistency, Jimmie’s 10 wins, Harvick’s 500 win, fuel mileage 600 win for Casey Mears, Jamie Mac close finish at the Pepsi 400, and then Greg Biffle controversial win at Kansas. To off everything of, the question of where Jr. would go provided intrigue week to week.

Being a Carl Edwards seeing him leave to drive for JGR was wild and fun. I’m still a fan of the 19 car to this day

2000 and 2001 were pretty crazy seasons. In 2000, there were some significant changes.

– Wally Dallenbach was released from Hendrick Motorsports and replaced with Jerry Nadeau.

– Ricky Rudd sold his team and moved to Robert Yates Racing to replace Kenny Irwin Jr. who left for Felix Sebates.

– Joe Nemechek left Felix Sebates to join Andy Petree Racing in the #33 car.

– Jeff Gordon had a new crew chief in the form of Robbie Loomis at the time.

– With the untimely death of Kenny Irwin, the #42 got withdrawn from competition.

Then there was 2001:

– Although Jeff Gordon kept DuPont and Pepsi as sponsors, the looks of his cars were different.

– Ray Evernham started his Dodge team and took on Bill Elliott and Casey Atwood to drive for him.

– Chip Ganassi came in to merge with Felix Sebates and they became a Dodge team. Sterling Marlin had a new look for his Coors Light car.

– Mark Martin switched from Valvoline to Viagra/Pfizer as a sponsor.

– MB2 Motorsports expanded to include the #10 Valvoline Pontiac driven by Johnny Benson.

– Dale Earnhardt Inc. expanded to a 3-car team and added Michael Waltrip to the lineup.

– Dale Jarrett switched from his Quality Ford Parts Ford to UPS colors.

– Jeff Burton switched his Exide Batteries colors for Citco Fuel colors.

– Kurt Busch was now driving the #97 Ford in his rookie season.

– Dale Earnhardt’s death led to Kevin Harvick taking over the GM Goodwrench car and switching the number to 29.

– Jerry Nadeau had new colors with UAW-Delphi.

– Robby Gordon would eventually take over the #31 after the season-ending crash for Mike Skinner.

– Kyle Petty’s number would change from 44 to 45 as a tribute to Adam.

– Steve Park’s injury mid-season led to Kenny Wallace driving the #1.

The #42 team wasn’t withdrawn after Irwin’s death. They took the week off, and came back as the #01 team.

Dale Jr jumping in the 5 after Kyle left the garage was the biggest silly season moment by far.

I would say for me Kyle Busch to RCR or Brad K to roush is the biggest moves I’ve seen in recent years and I don’t know if their will be another unless larson, logano, or Elliott ever leave their current teams

I remember last year I was at work and got a notification on my phone that Kyle Busch was about to go live with his new team announcement. I just got done listen to Dale Jr’s podcast where he said RCR was going to probably come out of no where and grab him.
I remember my jaw hitting the ground when Kyle finally announced it. It’s not Wacky by any means, But thats probably the biggest silly season moment I’ve experienced as a NASCAR fan.

1999 was wild, Ricky Rudd singing with Yates, Evernham leaving Hendrick for Dodge, and new owner Cal Wells coming into the sport from CART.

When it comes to Dario Franchitti, the main reason why he entered NASCAR with Ganassi was because there was a clause in his contract that basically said that if it did not work out in NASCAR, he could join their Indycar team the next year. At the time, Franchitti was at Andretti Autosport in Indycar & despite winning the 2007 Indy 500 & that year’s Indycar title wasn’t too happy with how Andretti stifled his opportunities to race in other series especially sports cars & NASCAR. Dario also felt as though Marco Andretti was getting better equipment & cars simply because he was Michael’s son even though Dario was the better driver. Once his NASCAR career ended, Dario decided to wait 8 months before deciding to join Ganassi on the Indycar side for the 2009 season. Michael Andretti immediately accused Ganassi of tampering because they had talked to Dario about the NASCAR opportunity while Dario was still a full time Indycar driver with Andretti. Indycar decided that there was no tampering & let Dario join Ganassi where he remained for the rest of his racing career until a violent accident at the Houston GP in 2013 ended his career.
