Why It Is Time To REVAMP Speedweek(s)

Speedweeks has been a point of concern for NASCAR fans over the last couple of years. What was once a multi week lead up to the biggest race in America now is merely a 5 day sprint that feels more in place for tradition’s sake rather than a needed aspect about the kickoff of NASCAR. This to me is why it is time to revamp Speedweek(s).

How would you like to see Speedweeks beefed up in the years to come?

Monday: Cars Tour race at 7:00 PM ET
Wednesday: Practice 2, 1 hour
Thursday: Duels
Friday: Truck Practice, Qualifying, and Race, Practice and Qualifying
Saturday: Arca, Xfinity, and 500 Practice 3 (60 minutes)
Sunday: Daytona 500

We almost saw Dale jr in 2003 sweep the whole speedweeks with a Clash win, duel win, bush series win, and I think he blew a tire and finshed 36th. But my point is if that he had won the 500 and swept the speedweeks it would’ve been historical. Now if someone were to win the Clash duel and 500 it wouldn’t be the same since the Clash isn’t at Daytona. If they bring it back to Daytona then we have the chance to witness the history Jr almost made.

I would love to see qualifying use the 670 HP tapered space. 200 mph single car qualifying laps are completely safe. That would bring some intrigue back.

I remember the days where we would get a whole week of action with practice for the 500, the bud shootout, the duels, and Daytona 500 qualifying along with the truck and XFINITY races. Now we barely get 2 practices for the 500. Speedweeks really needs to be speedweeks again.

We had Goody’s dash series in there too.

I miss when the Rolex really kicked it off and you got continuous buzz and activity between it and the 500

I’d love to see more practice at minimum, will it happen? Probably not but I wouldn’t be surprised if they condense speedweek even more ( i.e the Duels on Friday afternoon )

I agree with clash changing cities and comeback in daytona before now and then would be fun, but i would keep in Pro Bowl weekend since it is a event that not much people care about thus giving a better spotlight for NASCAr
The 500 qualy would put on Monday after Super bowl,, with added element that charter teams can be throw up of qualy/duels

It definitely does feels like the Daytona 500 kinda sneaks up on you, even me someone who watches all the races I kinda don’t feel any hype for the Daytona 500, it’s just too sudden and with no buildup, the Indy 500 I think is the perfect way to do it a race that has so much build up

I like the SB watch party idea but I think the broadcaster/NFL would block it to get more screens for better numbers

Don’t forget iroc was in there as well. Visiting Florida for 7 days and knowing you could spend more time watching racing was worth everything to kick off the season

All of the testing and practices made the 500 feel like it was something very special now with so little on track action it just feels like another race

Well said iceberg it brings back memories of watching iroc during speedweeks. I came to terms I don’t know where to begin calling it.

How awesome would it be if we got an IROC style race at Daytona under the lights as a ‘replacement’ for the Clash? Like all eligible NASCAR drivers but in IROC style cars. We get The Clash back at Daytona and an IROC race at the same time with no worries about drivers destroying cup cars. They could also add in the Xfinity and truck series champs from the last year if they needed rides to fill.

Dirt Car Nationals has races at nearby at Volusia almost every day for the 2 weeks leading up to Daytona Speedweek. Quite a few NASCAR drivers will be racing modifieds, late models, and/or sprint cars at Volusia and you can walk right through the pits anytime to see or meet them up close – NASCAR always has the Daytona 500 pace car at Volusia with some fan engagement activities. I always stay next to Daytona International Raceway; the hotel rates haven’t yet skyrocketed but there is a lot of activity prepping Daytona as the NASCAR hauler parade is the day after Volusia wraps up. So it is still possible to hit a 2 to 3 weeks of racing, it’s just not all at Daytona International Raceway.

You should do a video on the bigger restrictor plates in the xfinity series in the past 3 years. They were barely hitting 185 in the draft in the summer, and were hitting 187 during speed weeks. The year before that they were hitting 189, and the year before that 191ish.

I remember being a kid and looking forward to the preseason testing to see how my favorite driver did it got me counting down to this first practices for qualifying and the shootout

I wish they would bring back speedweeks the way it was years ago. Auto racing, especially NASCAR, has been the only sport I’ve ever took a big interest in, and the preseason testing, Rolex 24, the practices and the ARCA season opener just before the Daytona shootout, help to pass the time and build anticipation for the return of NASCAR. There was even one preseason test session that had a big one wreck that took out most of the cars. Only a few cars were left for the next session. That was in the early 2010’s.

I know this wouldn’t really be possible but I’d love to see them run arca and the shootout on saturday and then run Daytona 500 qualifying in the morning/afternoon before the Super Bowl on Super Bowl weekend

I miss how practice would begin 10 days before the 500 for Bud Shootout practice Friday night. And the draw was Thursday night. Just really set the whole tone for how big the event was. I miss it terribly.

I’d love to see a Daytona Double header, 500 Week 1, Followed by Daytona Roadcourse Week 2!
Would bring the Weeks aspect back.

Really Love the Daytona Roadcourse, sat through Rain at one of the Truck Races they had, that was a Fun Event!
