The Dale Jr Effect

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is a lot of things for NASCAR. He’s one of the most popular figures ever, a mainstream name, business owner, and broadcaster just to name a few. Dale Jr. is a figure like no other, it is quite possible that no other person in all of sports holds the same power, importance, and popularity as Earnhardt does for NASCAF. So today we will look at what he’s done after his driving days that puts him so far ahead. This is the Dale Jr. effect.

What do you think the biggest impact Dale Jr has on NASCAR after his driving career?

@stephenholloway6893 February 7, 2024 at 11:59 pm

Probably being a team owner in the Xfinity Series, hus broadcasting career, and being the one who helped bring North Wilkesboro back.

What I would like to know is HOW these drivers became as popular as they were. Like “Why was Bill Elliott popular?” “Why was Dale Earnhardt popular?” “What caused unpopular drivers like Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, and now Kyle Busch to become popular?” Y’know, stuff like that. What does it take to be MPD?

@ElFuego35 February 8, 2024 at 12:14 am

@@crystaljon For the last 3… the fact that when they were starting out they were young, and beating the old guard, with a bit of cockyness. They became popular when it was THEM that were/are the old guard that mellowed with age dealing with new, cocky, upstarts.

Also, with NASCAR, MPD is a fan voted award… and lets just say that outside of the Earnhardt wins, ballot box stuffing occurs as the Elliotts (Bill, and his Son Chase) home town overwhelms the other votes.

Dale Sr only became universally popular after he died, previously he had a 50/50 love-hate relationship with the fans, because of his driving style, and the fact fans saw themselves in him, and he flatout said “Boo or Cheer, I just want the fans to react, it’s the lack of reaction from the fans that would upset me”.

He needs to talk about McDowell Supremacy! Then he’ll truly have an effect.

Dale Jr needs to remain in the booth until he decides when he is done. There’s no other way around it.
As a driver who has knowledge of the sport, as well as a great podcaster, Dale has every right to call NBC out on their BS contract nonsense. If anything, Jr needs to be there permanently.

Being a busch series owner and the dale jr download, and also bringing the old tracks back, and his broadcasting, he’s just so damn smart about everything racing

It’ll be criminal IMO if Dale Jr isn’t able to return to the Booth this year.
His calls of “OH WE GOT A CRASH”, “OH WE GOT A CAR IN THE WALL”, and “OH WE GOT A SPIN” are Iconic in my opinion, so is his famous “SLIDE JAWB” call (and his recreation 5 years later “SLIDE JAWB RICK”)

Dale Jr is basic NASCAR’s unofficial goodwill Ambassador.

This would be dumb. Many fans want Burton kicked out not Dale Jr.

I wasn’t originally a Jr. fan. Until SR. Passed. Then like many others, it drew me into being a fan of Jr.
It really amazes me to see Jr. now, compared to that shy kid, who fumbled through interviews when he was young. Now he is the face of NASCAR, making a huge mark on the sport in his own way, just like SR.

For me, it was after Teresa took over DEI. The way Dale Jr. & Kelley have stuck together really says a lot.

I don’t think you have to look any further than North Wilkesboro to see the Dale Jr effect. Was he the only voice advocating to bring it back? No, absolutely not. Fans have been asking for it since it was dropped off the schedule, even as it faded from memory in the modern sport. But when he went out and helped clean it up so iRacing could scan it, that lit a fire in the imagination of the fanbase. Support started to really build, until there was enough to put serious money into renovating it and bringing it back on the schedule. Not two years later, the All Star Race moved there from Texas, something that many commentators thought was impossible.

I suspect that, on some level, NASCAR leadership resents the pull Dale Jr has with the fans. He’s the single most influential voice in the sport, and he’s not afraid of them. At the same time, he’s the best PR tool they have. Even people who don’t give a damn about NASCAR know who Dale Jr is. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them try to bring him into the fold in the next decade or so.

As a foreigner fan of Jr. since 08 (yeah, It was the beggining of that slump) I have to talk that he’s bigger than NASCAR in some ways: HE IS way more popular than the category itself, he speaks very well, he can change narratives (as The Clash already cited in the video) and most of all, he represents a large part of the fanbase, just to call some of those arguments. I remember talking to friends at the time and they didn’t like NASCAR but they knew Jr.. IF NBC let him go, it’ll be their biggest mistake and can open a window for NASCAR bring Jr. closely to be the go-to-guy like an ambassador. Congrats for the channel and greetings for your fan in Brazil!

I have been a Dale Jr. Fans since he was in the Busch series and a big fan of his Dad. Nobody loves Nascar more than Jr.

Reply
@HirokaAkita February 8, 2024 at 1:29 am

Junior is now the fan’s equivalent to what his dad was for the drivers. A leader, a role model, a Senior in full meaning.

Jr’s legacy will be comparable to Sr’s one, just in another area of the sport. Not the sports-side, but the human and historical side of things.

Love it or hate it truthfully in 2001 Dale Jr became the face of Nascar. Obviously it helps that he’s from one of the few famous nascar families, but he took on that weight of loosing his dad and being the only person to be able to represent that family legacy. And he built on that legacy and made it his own, yes the success he had was less than his fathers but when your dad is top 3/4 all time that’s to be expected, but his fandom far out passed that of his fathers. Truthfully he has been the face of NASCAR like no one else besides maybe the king before him. And really the only current driver that could come close currently is Chase but he doesn’t seem to want to go out and about like JR did to become that super star.

The guests on the podcast are incredible. Hearing some of the stories from the 70s 80s 90s NASCAR is a treat. Dale Jr interviewing his family (Kerry, Uncle Danny, & Aunt Linda?) are among the best episodes. They give prespective on the early days of Dale Sr and the Earnhardt family. What makes Dale Jr real is that he is objective about his family struggles as a child. In the 90s it looked cool to be the son of the Intimidator but there is so much more. Also his podcast humanize the larger than life figure of Dale Sr.

i literally just had this conversation on 1 of jr download’s episodes where someone in the comments said, “jr is sooooooo important to the sport. nascar should get smart with that.” i absolutely agreed with that.

it’s funny to me when drivers were asked why jr is so popular and a number of them couldn’t answer. i just keep saying there’s no bigger fan and promoter for nascar than dale jr. he really is the voice of fans who love and appreciate it’s history, but he’s a business man who also wants to see it grow for the future. no other driver in this 21st century era has been so influential to the sport than dale jr whether ppl want to admit that or not. he’s not even on the track anymore, but his voice carries weight and he will use whatever means he can to always try to keep the focus on nascar and how to improve it for everyone (fans, drivers, teams, owners, business, etc). if there was no dale jr around, i really don’t know where nascar would be today and that’s the god honest truth.
