The Netflix series and the Cup races so far (with the exception of Phoenix of course) have been absolutely incredible.

This is my uneducated opinion, but I think it comes down to 2 factors:

1. The lack of Chase Elliott brought the ratings way down at the beginning of 2023.
2. NASCAR: Full Speed really helped people get educated on the current stars and get invested in them.

I was visiting family and relatives this past week and for most of them, it was their first time watching NASCAR and they all genuinely enjoyed it!

Honest question, what was the problem with Phoenix? As a new fan, I haven’t found an answer anywhere online, just a lot of hate without substance.

@@mhurley782 Dirty air, hard to pass, toyota dominated.

Reply
@FoodCityCupSeries March 20, 2024 at 11:33 pm

@mhurley782 The passing was a extremely difficult. Even for the guys we see race on Sundays. For example, Tyler Reddick was one of the best at sliding through the field quickly, but on the final pit stop, he was put in a rough position back in 16th and only recovered to 10th after only being behind Bell all day. And some say bell was the only good one, but he was just the only one who could do it on the last run, from 20th to 1st. It was just boring and slow paced really.

@johnstevens2183 March 20, 2024 at 11:34 pm

It was an okay race, people just tend to not care for Phoenix a lot since they made it the championship track and the product on track doesn’t live up to that hype. It tends to be very hard to pass or get control away from the leader at this track recently.

I also want to give an honorable mention to Fox’s coverage. Not amazing but an improvement from last year. Plus the intrigue from seeing Kevin Harvick in the booth and the praise he’s gotten.

I would say Netflix, F1 having Red Bull win everything and Chase being there. I think your seeing many people wanting to give their time to a racing series where different drivers can win. I would also say Fox has improved and with the CW, TNT and Prime will help give a boost.

I would say that fans have come over from F1 after being burned out from the Max Verstappen show. F1’s ratings have dipped massively and the sport in general is going through PR hell

Reply
@WhopperJrWithCheese March 21, 2024 at 3:45 am

@@leonardfrey5426Well yeah, it’s a worldwide sport, so it’ll probably remain top dog, however their on track production is certainly lacking compared to NASCAR.

Reply
@nickklavdianos5136 March 21, 2024 at 9:59 am

@@WhopperJrWithCheeseF1 forever has been and forever will be not as exciting in wheel to wheel racing as NASCAR. Because NASCAR is pretty much a spec series, while F1 isn’t, so the car performance varies. NASCAR also throws stage cautions to artificially bunch up the field. There’s also the fact that RedBull got things right early on and have ridden their advantage ever since, while the other teams are scrambling to catch up to them.
Another point is reliability. Cars in F1 don’t blow up nearly as often as they used to, especially the top cars.
And the last point is the unreal driver that is Max Verstappen. The guy doesn’t put a foot wrong. He is a relentless machine. I don’t really like his racing style, but I think he’s up there with the greatest drivers ever, Fangio, Clark, Stewart, Lauda, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton.
When you give a driver like Max a perfect car precisely tailored to his driving style, you have total domination.
In truth, F1 is an engineers sport. NASCAR has parted ways with the Smokey Yunick and Junior Johnson types a long time ago. In F1, these are the exact people who make the biggest difference.
Adrian ‘aero wizard’ Newey is the best example of that.

One of the reasons why I think more people are tuning into NASCAR is I think people are sick of the Max Verstappen dominance in F1. So you got some F1 fans watching NASCAR now.

@@etotherescue2010 Some people will go out of their way to watch a live race. I woke up early at least a few times just to watch international racing. I’m sure that there are many motorsports fans who would wake up earlier than normal to watch a race.

I think the great start to the season has more people tuning into races. The Daytona 500 was really great and then we had one of the best finishes in NASCAR History at Atlanta. Something is always happening week in and week out in NASCAR this year, and I really think that has more fans tuning into races.

@acegarcia3719 March 20, 2024 at 11:25 pm

Part of what contributed to Nascar’s golden age was the CART-IRL split and perhaps we are seeing that again but with F1, that the dominance of Max Verstappen and the rejection of Andretti is benefiting Nascar’s popularity.

Reply
@ItsMavicBrah March 21, 2024 at 12:28 am

This is a big one that was missed in the list. F1 is a snoozefest… NASCAR has been hype nearly all season for one reason or another.

Reply
@minisuds777 March 21, 2024 at 12:42 am

These F1 reasons are exactly why I’m giving NASCAR more attention this year. There is very little to get excited about on track, the off track drama is a shitshow, and Andretti’s entry rejection was a gut punch. F1 is getting less headspace from me as a result so I’m using it as an opportunity to give NASCAR a fair shake.

I’m already a big fan of Indycar, IMSA, and WEC. Pretty certain NASCAR is joining my list of “need to watch” motorsport if the trajectory of this season keeps up.

The main reason on why people are watching are cause the Netflix show, Denny Ryan and even nascars main insta page grew by hundreds of thousands after the docu release, yes I kept track months before till after the release

@arf1fteen March 20, 2024 at 11:59 pm

I grew up during NASCAR’s boom period you referred to but drifted away around 2010. I think a commercial for the Daytona 500 during football season piqued my interest again. I watched the 500 and then found out about the Netflix series. I binged that as well as NASCAR YouTubers and haven’t missed a Cup race this season. I think digging into the history more and realizing it’s not just drivers turning left has kept me interested. I’ve looked forward to every race this season after one ends.

EDIT: I forgot to add – my wife, who’s never watched, won’t admit it, but she has been entertained as well.

Fantastic time to return to the sport. The new cars have developed nicely, the new age of drivers are flourishing, the racing is pretty damn good. Overall NASCAR is trending back up. Still far from perfect… but its a damn good product right now.

Weirdly, I feel like YouTube documentaries were the biggest reason I felt like coming back.
