You could call NASCAR’s Southern California situation quite the kerfuffle.

NASCAR: *(Converts one of the best big tracks into a short track)*

Also NASCAR: *(Doesn’t realize Kern Raceway exists)*

It’s a nice facility, but that’s not where the bulk of the SoCal market is. That’s the start of the central valley. They need something closer to LA/OC/SB.

It would be a better choice for NASCAR to invest in Irwindale.

Reply
@crystaljon March 29, 2024 at 7:34 pm

@@Glitchunlocked Irwindale is just as unlikely. It’s pretty much suffering from the same “valuable land” issue that Auto Club had. Even now, the owners are probably still having to deal with real estate offers. Not to mention the track’s troubled history with changing owners and closures and rumors of demolition.

Reply
@Glitchunlocked March 29, 2024 at 9:39 pm

@@crystaljon Irwindale is fine. They have a multi-year contract to keep operating and the most recent plan anounced in 2022 to redevelop the land fell through rather quickly. It helps that the land isn’t nearly as valuable as the land that Auto Club stood on.

If NASCAR chose to help invest in the track, that would help cement it’s future.

March 2024: Ford is struggling and is lagging behind Chevy and Toyota.
November 2024: Ford somehow ends up winning the championship again…

@TactShooter March 29, 2024 at 7:25 pm

Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney are your top Ford Talent. Chase Briscoe is the only one who has the real talent and ceiling that could get him into that conversation. Anyone else does not have enough experience/talent to be a championship winner in any format…

*edit* I thought about Keselowski and Buescher, but I am not completely sold on RFK Racing having the equipment to constantly go for wins with a subpar car. Gragson has the talent but not enough experience.

Both RFK drivers are above at least 3/4 of SHR in points. RFK is here and they are good. FRM is arguably better than SHR. As far as chase briscoe having more talent then either RFK driver(Brad is a fucking champion) or even the two FRM drivers I think is laughable. I think McDowell is still the most slept on driver in the cup series and as FRM continues to get better his and Todd’s running position continue to do better as well

@connorbingel7134 March 29, 2024 at 9:43 pm

Let me correct my self. Both RFK drivers are above all of SHR putting them solidly as at least the second best ford team

Cam Waters is one hell of a driver, and he’s raced in speedway racing for quite some time. Insanely aggressive, too. He’ll be a factor for sure.

@XxmetalHeadxX88 March 29, 2024 at 6:27 pm

I wonder if NASCAR will try Willow Springs. Its a track in Southern California, and they raced there in 1957. They would need to make some minor changes to the track to make it raceable, but the changes are a far cry from what changes that need to be made to Auto Club.

Reply
@Glitchunlocked March 29, 2024 at 6:35 pm

The track itself is raceable, but they’d need to build stands and other facilities for things like food and comfort. I’ve spent a lot of time out there and there simply aren’t any good viewing locations for a large group of spectators right now.

What a Bummer no Nascar racing in Long Beach…Irwindale Speedway a short 1/2 mile track right up the 605 freeway. It would be a great place for to hold The Clash.

Reply
@leejefferson5373 March 29, 2024 at 10:54 pm

Irwindale is probably too small for a premier NASCAR race in my opinion

Reply
@bearmarsh6579 March 29, 2024 at 11:04 pm

It’s bigger then the LA Coliseum or Dodger Stadium. Irwindale Speedway has a lot of land to expand. California Speedway short track may not be built after all.

God bless Gerald Forsythe! He was a former CART/Champ Car team owner. Owning the “Players” car and gave AJ Allmendinger a chance, and won 5 races for them in 2006!

As an IndyCar fanatic, we needed some good news.

I wouldn’t have mind NASCAR raced at Long Beach, but owning them? Thank goodness that won’t happen.

Gerald Forsythe saving Long Beach for Indycar is ultimate irony. Forsythe owned a stake in Champ Car, owned teams in Champ Car. When reunification happened, he folded his teams rather than rejoin reunified Indycar. But he just did Indycar a huge solid.

Cam is one of the more aggressive drivers in supercars, races speedway in the summer months, should go alright, id expect a top 20 would be a commendable effort.

Also going to have to get used to the american way of Waters being pronounced.

Reply
@formulafish1536 March 30, 2024 at 3:28 am

Cam Waters is like a more aggressive, but less polished SVG. He will provide entertainment, but you can never tell if he will be Chequers or wreckers. He should be a championship threat this year, and at the AusGP he showed the pace, but he has a terrible habit of crashing into his teammates, as well as other Ford drivers, rather than trying to work with them to beat the opposition.
