This is the same technology that VAR uses in soccer to determine things like offsides

for the record, in the 125cc race of the motogp german grand prix there was a dead heat between first and second, neither timing or the high speed camera could determine the winner so they had to go to a tie breaker, so yeah, it can happen even with the latest tech

Good to know, but was what tie breaker was used?

@@roberthevern6169It was used the fastest lap

The reason it looks smaller by the apron is bc it’s further away from the camera. One could also argue that cars going over the line for 400 laps, the paint can wear off in spots.✌

I like your laser visual accuracy!
Care to elaborate?

@@roberthevern6169 It was pretty self explanatory so, I don’t know what else you want me to say. Not trying to be a bi*ch, just an observation.

How does the transponder being located to the rear
of the car affect the result, if at all. Does the TP create an IR field or what?

Reply
@scottshinbaum1772 May 7, 2024 at 8:49 pm

If a car is not perfectly straight (or backwards in Aric Almirola’s case in 2019 at Talladega), then it can trigger the transponder earlier than the nose of the car hitting the actual line. This is likely part of what happened with Buescher, as the car was a little wobbly coming to the line at Kansas. That is why anything within about .01 is considered within a margin of error to review the high-speed scan.

It’s interesting we didn’t get this image when Suarez won.

@@TheUncancelable1 lol thats what I was thinking. Not only that but the 99 clearly won on the replay this was a little harder to judge

Looks very familiar to how VAR drawing an offside line in soccer.

Going off of the tiebreaker, Larson wins anyways as he led more laps (63 vs 54)

@bretf May 7, 2024 at 10:24 pm

Are there cameras on the outside of the track looking in too? Seems like it would have been more difficult to tell from the shown camera image if Larson would have been on the inside and Buescher on the outside.

@DatDuckOfficial May 7, 2024 at 11:01 pm

i think a cool way to do a tie breaker would be to do something similar to the Cars movie

Look how tiny Bushers car looks in the picture? Anyone else see that. Lol

@NCPilot May 7, 2024 at 11:48 pm

So, why are the transponder in the rear of the car instead of in the front? Wouldn’t it make more sense to put the transponder in the nose?

1. Where?
2. Antenas are before painted line so u would need to move them on any track…

If the physical visible line is not the mark, the drivers are being mis-directed on how to win a race.

@mikeclark7026 May 8, 2024 at 12:21 am

Did they say they have this at pit road as well? Pit doesn’t pay out points, and the cars should always be going perfectly straight. That seems a waste.

The 17 hit the scoring loop line first, live on TV. The photo has the 5 car hitting the painted line first. In a points paying finish they used the painted line with a camera.

@ethanhoward498 May 8, 2024 at 2:37 am

They didn’t use the painted line, see: this video

When I was on my HS XC team, we had a runner on our team, and a runner from another team finish so close that the time was exact, so the camera had to confirm the finish
