That is why you see him disengage the fuel can after the flames erupt. as @Jayfeather7764 mentioned there are valves in both the gas can and at the top of the filler neck on the car that unless the 2 are connected and fueling, they automatically seal closed. So all that caught on fire was the little bit of fuel spillage on the area around the filler hole and the splash on the end of the filler tank. once that burned off everything else is sealed behind those valves.

The fuel tank in the car and the gas can both have valves that shut when they aren’t together. Super cool safety feature.
