Kyle Busch may just go down as one of the best drivers in the history of NASCAR racing. With that being said the last few years have steadily fallen away from that standard with 2024 starting off on an awful note. So today, 15 races into 2024 we are going to look into Rowdy’s worst season yet and try to figure out the issues. What is going wrong with Kyle Busch?

Why do you think Kyle Busch has been in decline?
The team isn’t the best, bad luck and age
Was starting to blame JUST the pit crew
The new car
Team equipment
Washed
Lack of practice since 2020 led to this guy’s downfall
Absolutely it has!!!
He doesn’t need practice.
And the next gen has nerfed him as well
It’s honestly so stupid that they don’t allow practice. Steve Phelps does NOT know what he’s doing
Doesn’t seem to be hurting the other drivers
Lack of practice and racing for RCR’s Cup program is the problem.
I don’t blame him for being mad and frustrated (except him intentionally wrecking Stenhouse)
He needs to get out of RCR. Even if (I have no idea how long his contract is), say Penske, 23XI, and MAYBE JGR if MTJ retires offer to buy him out. Toyota/JGR bought Chandler Smith out of a multi-year Kaulig Racing Chevy contract.
@@nascar4842 Penske unlikely and Kaulig, no…
@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT I meant that Kaulig Racing had Chandler Smith signed on a multi-year deal when he joined the Xfinity Series and that Toyota and JGR bought Chandler out. I meant that if Kyle became a free agent, if a team wanted him bad enough, they would get him.
@@nascar4842 but Kaulig’s Cup program sucks
@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT OH. Yeah, that would be a step in the wrong direction. The only other bold prediction that he could go is RFK. Depending on how if Brad wants to pursue Justin Haley or is able to get 2 charters.
As a lifelong Kyle Busch fan, I’ll tell you why: Father time. He’s nearly 40 and he hasn’t won in the playoffs since 2020. And without great equipment and his clutch nature of years past, he’s shown his age even more than before.
Ur not a fan then. He still has the talent but this car is horrible and does not fit his style of driving (being loose) and making aggressive moves, which he can’t do because you can’t pass anybody
@MoonRacing23 bro what? Age absolutely is a factor. Does that take away from what he accomplished in his prime ? Certainly not, and it’s not like he’s horrible or anything but it does look like his championship contending days are behind him
I feel like people are quick to forget how big some of the hits NASCAR drivers take and how it can affect their health and performance short and long term. Short off-seasons, raising a family, running a race team and running as many races as Nascar let him for 20 years will takes it toll on anyone.
@@MoonRacing23 Kyle always complains about not being able to pass with this car, but how many times have we seen other drivers start at the rear to start the race and by the end of stage 1 are top 10 or at least top 12? A LOT. It’s not as impossible to pass with this car if you’re fast enough. RCR equipment is just garbage. Guaranteed, if he had worked out something to stay at JGR, he would still be performing much better.
Harvick was dominating the series at the same age
One damning thing I heard from the booth last race was that the 8 team ran the EXACT same set up that they won with last win at this race. I think that is an indication that RCR, or at least the 8 team, got lazy. They were fast as hell in 2022 with Reddick and the first half of 2023 with Busch. We all know how every single race, teams learn and get better, but for whatever reason, the 8 ran the exact same setup as last year, which means they did not get better when everyone else around them did. What if they are approaching every race with the same standard? They use what worked in the past instead of innovating and being faster than last time like so many other teams.
Richard just doesn’t care anymore
@@BraydenBunch58 It’s possible it could come down to poor leadership. But ultimately, if you are a crew chief and are content with just running the same speed you did last year, then that’s a failure from the crew chief. You always have to strive to be better and faster. Coming to a race 1 year later with the exact same setup tells me the crew chief, war room at HQ, whoever it is that makes that decision, is content with running the same speed while everyone else around learns and gets faster.
They ran last year’s Hendrick setups at Richmond if I remember correctly
Using what worked in the past and never innovating? That’s just RCR in general
I always go back to Kyle Busch’s worst enemy is himself.
True that.
That’s nothing new.
Every time KFB struggles, I always hear that one clip: “I suck just as bad as you!”
Bruh. That was two weeks ago lol
In my opinion
1 lack of practice
2 bad equipment
3 anger and emotions
4 age he’s not young
5 next gen makes more teams competitive
All of this has all led to a decline in performance
Yup, all those things really add up to work against him.
I wouldn’t call 39 old, but experienced. The problem is the new gen car. You can see it by the inconsistent runs by every driver, regardless of talent level. I do agree with your other assessments.
OK, why have the younger guys been demoted to the xfinity scrubs. Why has Elliot, Gibbs, Truex, Suarez, and Chastain been in the toilet so much.
@@user-zq3iz3zn5m Its the car, the new generation car that sucks but looks good. Any change in the temperature outdoors throws off all settings made the night before the race. I can only say that all the drivers are suffering from the inconsistency of this new car. The owners determine where their drivers’ race. You left out two, 2-time champions Logano and Busch. The new car needs narrower tires, not the wide slicks and more horsepower, just for a start. The car was designed to let poorer race teams, and less talented drivers be competitive every week, making talent secondary.
@oktoday8323
Why not just blame it on covid. Are these guys just not capable off over coming the technology. Or has over engineering defeated ones education VS. the capacity to learn. Are you saying next year they will have conquered the new car … or is next year going to be the dawn of another new care and more rule changes. Maybe Matty D and Haley Deegan will have a chance.
Thinking about it, what are the chances that Denny wants a 3rd charter for a guy like Kyle? I know there are options on the table, but what are the chances that 23XI pulls him from RCR?
I don’t think it’s impossible but pretty unlikely. It be interesting to see tho
Great idea. he needs to be back in a Toyota.
It could be possible but they’re probably looking at the future. Also keep in mind 23XI probably won’t get a third charter because the third car is gonna be Hamlin but he’s working on winning the championship with JGR first.
I’d say the chances are zero because if rumors are true, Riley Herbst is going to 23XI. The rumor is his family is trying to help purchase the charter.
The problem with Kyle Busch is that he’s exactly the same racing driver as Sebastian Vettel. Both drivers liked oversteer under the condition that the car has rear end security. When they were given that, they’re just as good as any driver that came before them. Vettel’s security came from the blown diffuser from ‘09-‘13 and Kyle’s came from the fender flare from ‘06-‘18. While there was still flared fenders in ‘19-‘21, the 550hp wasn’t enough power for Kyle Busch to pitch the car into the slip angle he wanted in the middle of the corner (Johnson suffered from this as well but didn’t need nearly as much rear end security). Kyle tends to play catch-up with the throttle when the setup or car isn’t to his liking and feels the need to brake extremely late and get on the power early to the point that he’ll lift off the throttle on corner exists and kill his straight line speed (watch literally any track less than a mile and a half during practice). Vettel had a very aggressive V shaped racing line into many corners and while they both are short corner drivers (spending the least amount of time at the moment of rotation) they never were the best drivers to get the car settled in the middle of the corner which is why they both spun or lost the car in the middle of the corner more times than a Jeff Gordon or Alan Prost. Gordon and Prost never leaned on the tires as much as Vettel or Busch through corners and both had really good platforms (flat car) which produced a more evened out tire wear over a fuel run compared the Busch and Vettel. Although this a driving style analysis, RCR definitely has lost speed year over year in the next gen era and gets majority blame since they’re on the same tier as Hendrick. The lack of practice does mean that car feedback is limited for Busch (ironically I rate both Vettel and him on setup feedback) but they haven’t had a test in where they hit the setup for a specific type of track in awhile except for Gateway
As a fan of both drivers. This is correct.
Wow, this is a great comparison that I never thought of. That makes a lot of sense.
Yes. The quick version of this comment is…. the “new car” has cost Busch. No one has lost the “back end” more than Busch. Nobody. For many reasons, the “new car”…. sucks.
Great analysis that’s totally on point.
From my observation as a fan of his, it’s a mix bag of what has gone wrong this season. 1) Pit road issues whether it be the crew, Randall making the wrong adjustments or Kyle speeding have affected the results. 2) Having no normal practice has hurt his ability to really dial in and work on the car like he was used to prior to 2020. He can still wheel a Truck or Xfinity car with no issues, but this Next-Gen car has presented some challenges mostly to the veteran drivers who don’t have a lot of tools to work with compared to the Gen 6 car. It has been frustrating to watch each week and it’s gotten to him badly. I want him to keep that win streak alive but unless changes are made, I don’t see it happening :/
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Adam Steven, won both championships with Kyle Busch and was no longered paired with each other after 2020. Adam Steven has made the final 4 twice since they split so it just feels as if he has a bit of impact on Kyle’s decline as well.
Edit: Another thing to consider. When they started together in 2015 they made every Championship race until 2020, their only year they didn’t make it.
Big Kyle Busch fan here, Adam Stevens definitely had a role in the prime of Kyle Busch’s career. Similar to Chris Gabehart for Denny Hamlin right now.
People are quick to point out Busch’s age but Hamlin is 43 and Truex is 44 and they’re both competing at top level.
Truex has showed signs of decline though. He struggled in 2022, then had a bounce back last year before choking in the playoffs, and he’s been kind of quiet this season so far.
@@zachwalentinyI would even say since 2020, he only won once that year and was in a must win situation at Martinsville and 2021 while better was nearly kicked out the playoffs in the round of 8 and got bailed out late
I would put in the class as Elliot who has won one race in three years they are both about the same both lacking for wind
Martin was good till the end
That is because Hamlin is still trying to go for A championship where as Truex he has been flirting with retirement an it could be the last season we see him.
I’m not trying to completely defend Kyle Busch, but some of the problem is his team. His cars are not as good as last year and his pit crew is constantly screwing him up. However, I feel the further we get into the season, the more of a problem it is on the driver.
Kyle Busch recently said that after the halfway point of the 2023 season, like Elliott after the 2022 regular season, he really struggled with this next gen car and how to handle it.
I do think he still has the talent, but is just stuck in a really bad rut.
In my opinion, the reason veteran drivers fall off in the years since the newest generation car arrived, is because their vast experience was erased with the touchy-feely new car. This new car takes longer to learn after you had the other generation cars mastered. Not only has it sent the engineers for a loop, but all the teams. You can see that even the best younger drivers have inconsistent runs week to week. The car is really a lemon in its present rules package. Kyle Busch has just added to the problems with the car out of recklessness.
The same reason we all thought Harvick was only a good not a great driver while at RCR. It’s all about equipment and team chemistry.
Talk to people in the industry they said that Kyle Bush was one of the best dialing in the car in practice in the last 20+ years. Also, no matter how good of a driver you are you can’t drive a slow car. lol I think it’s showing how much Childress racing has fallen off.
RCR hasn’t been good in Cup since Dale died.
1. He hasn’t figured out this car yet
2. RCR is a mediocre team
3. No practice
I don’t think he’s lost the ability to drive. I think you can look at guys like Hamlin and see that there was a dip in production for a couple years and then it ascended. Kyle will need better equipment to be the 2019 version, but that doesn’t seem like a possibility…unless Hendrick dumps Bowman.
RFK is likely getting a third charter. Maybe we see a surprise silly season move. This silly season is gonna be chaotic to say the least.
Except the difference is Hamlin still needs to win a championship though where as Kyle Busch already has enough.
feel like its the pit crew. dont think he fell off. still wins in trucks multiple times so i dont think his racing senses are no longer tingling
