This was a crazy announcement, and honestly I kind of saw it coming when the rumors of a team switching to toyota came out, along with LMC dropping in performance, but I didn’t ACTUALLY expect it to happen

Reply
John Coffelt May 3, 2023 at 12:28 am

Think about it from from the POV of hierarchy among the GM teams, LMC will go from 5th or 6th team in factory support to 3rd at worst in the Toyota group, and GM has announced that the Carmaro is being discontinued in a couple of years and doesn’t currently have a vehicle to fill its spot.

You saw it coming but you didn’t expect to see it happen?? Can you explain the logic there please??

@DIY Chad 726 I saw it coming as a last case scenario, but I didn’t expect it to actually happen soon. Should have specified more but I was trying to keep it as brief as I could

I’m in complete shock about this right now but honestly a few years ago, there was speculation about Richard Petty’s switching his team over to Toyota..

Reply
Glonnie Canoy May 2, 2023 at 9:57 pm

And then, all of that speculations because true now.

Reply
Hailstorm86 May 2, 2023 at 10:01 pm

@Glonnie Canoyit’s going to be weird seeing the #43 as a Camry. The one cool thing I can see is Toyota doing is more meet-and-greet events with Richard Petty.

Reply
Cole Murray May 2, 2023 at 10:56 pm

LMC isn’t Richard’s team anymore. Jimmie and Maury are doing all of the work.

Yea. I really don’t see the whole reason behind why they did that. Yea I get Toyota wants to expand their empire in the Nascar cup series. They could’ve just gotten Erick Jones to go over to JGR after Truex retires in the next year or so.

This absolutely hurt me when I first read the news. For one, the timing of it couldn’t have been any worse. On Saturday, I had just gotten a Chevy Cobalt that I could race my local short track, and I was going to model its paint Scheme based on Jimmie Johnson’s car, preferably one of his championship-winners. When I first heard the news, I would have given it up in despair, but now I understand that higher-ups would have made the change regardless if Johnson was along with it or not. While it still hurts, I can at least continue forward with my plans for Bowtie Racing, and with one od Johnson’s paint schemes and his 48 adorning this car.

At the very least, he might have a better shot at running well in races with Toyota

@Gob he’s likely in the street stocks, it’s mostly late 90’s early 2000’s bare bone street factory cars, at my local track Hondas aren’t allowed because it’s not even close, been considering getting a early 2000’s Nissan or Mitsubishi to run

I also will say Legacy is having a season like RFK last year. New leader and struggling to figure out where everyone is. Bringing Toyota May make next year a struggle but I think it’s the right time.

Reply
James Scully May 2, 2023 at 9:24 pm

Legacy wasn’t even a fourth level Chevrolet team – Hendrick is number one, RCR is second, and Trackhouse is probably third. Even Kaulig might be considered by Chevrolet above them. They might not get a better shake with Toyota but they won’t be lower than third. It is a sound business decision. The history for Petty is doing what was necessary to win, no matter what the manufacturer.

Luke Penguin Mashups May 2, 2023 at 10:24 pm

The parity is kinda insane this year. Hendrick Motorsports is basically just barely S tier, and then the gap between Trackhouse/23XI/Joe Gibbs/Penske/RCR is A tier.

And yes RCR is good, Austin Dillon just sucks. Thats 17/32 full time cup drivers with a top ride.

Kaulig/Stewart Haas/RFK/JTG Daugherty is B tier. RFK is improving the most week to week.

Wood Brothers/Spire/Legacy Motor Club/Front Row is C tier

Live Fast/Rick Ware is D/F tier

Rich's Rips (instagram) May 3, 2023 at 6:38 am

Bro trackhouse is second and other than kyle busch Austin dillon is worse than any Kaulig driver

John Michael Dornoff May 2, 2023 at 9:24 pm

It is a good move for the team as they were so far down the pecking order for Chevrolet despite Johnson being involved in the team. It will be interesting to see how they perform next year.

EliteMM May 2, 2023 at 10:09 pm

Seconded. I’m personally not very happy with the change since the 43 has so much (forgive the pun) legacy with GM, as well as another American auto maker Chrysler corp. However, I do understand that nostalgia comes after performance, and considering how badly this team has been doing this year, it makes sense, and it’s not like the 43 team is a stranger to switching manufacturers. Though I know that a lot of the fan base is not going to be happy.

If they show 1/2 of the results that Tyler Reddick has shown so far this season… I think it will give the team some hope. But only time will tell.
As for the fans disliking Toyota… It is what it is. But if LMC starts to win and consistently get top 10’s, I think the fans will look past the manufacturer change.

FormulaChris085 May 3, 2023 at 3:11 am

@EliteMM TBF there was a decent chance of it happening like 14 years ago, RPM was heavily considering a Toyota switch after being in a very similar position as they were right now with Dodge not providing a lot of support to the team in 2009, before ultimately going to Ford later in the season.

I’m just surprised it actually happened for once. This is like the third Petty to Toyota rumor we’ve had and this had a similar amount of signs pointing to it as the other.

as a longtime jeff gordon and hms fan this is the smartest move for lmc. they will never be treated as equals to hms or rcr. even trackhouse seems like they are getting more from chevy. this is what happens when a manufacturer puts most of its support in a few teams the others barely stay above water.

Even Spire looks better this season so far. No offense to Lajoie, but Spire is arguably the lowest Chevy team in NASCAR

This reminds me of the rumors from a couple of years ago about RPM switching to Toyota. Cool to see Jones and Gragson back in Toyota rides! As for the 2 UPS throwbacks, they look amazing!

Honestly, seeing the 42 and 43 cars as Toyotas doesn’t really surprise me. Back in the Richard Petty Motorsport days they have been off and on linked to switching to Toyota as early as 2009. There was even a story where Kasey Kane showed up to a photo shoot and his number 9 Budwiser car had a Toyota body (this was back when the team was with Dodge). The only thing that I would consider “shocking”, would be the Jimmie Johnson connection. I figured with him as a part owner, they would stay with Chevrolet. But lets face it, they were going nowhere where they’re currently at, so lets see what happens!

Alan_M00ch May 2, 2023 at 9:54 pm

I remember when it was highly rumored that a Chevrolet team was leaving for Toyota a couple years ago. We all flung JTG, Petty, and Spire around. LaJoie said “Petty” and we all honed in on that. It was heavily denied at the time. So this feels like this was years in the making and the news of Legacy Garage (No, I will NOT say the actual team name as I think the actual team name is absolutely stupid and is NOT a team name for a NASCAR team) moving to Toyota in 2024 is the payoff we all waited for when it was first rumored.

And if they’re using turnbuckles to attach and adjust the underfloor tray to the vehicle. Then by the nuts being able to back off, it could allow the turn buckle to rotate and possibly allow the underfloor tray to lower closer to the ground. In turn making more downforce.

Absolute business decision for LMC. There’s been rumors about Toyota and Petty for years and they’re definitely near the bottom of the pecking order at Chevrolet while Toyota has only 6 cars and is known to pool resources.

@RJs Atv Parts he has no ownership stake anymore, but he’s still associated with the team.

I’m a die hard Jimmie Johnson fan, and have been since 2003 when I was a kid. When he went to IndyCar and didn’t sign with a Chevy team, I was shocked, though, I’m now seeing the loyalty may not have been as deep and meaningful as it appeared to be on the outside. The move to Toyota for Legacy should allow JJ to rebrand himself and get a needed fresh start as a new team owner, and I am excited for it.
