First time a driver has won in their first start since the 60s
Yup! Johnny Rutherford, 1963, was the last time this happened. SVG made history on Sunday, no doubt about it!
And the Johnny Rutherford win was in a qualifying race so does that really qualify as a race.
Its got race in the name so yup it’s race
@Phuc Yhou they don’t even count all star wins as wins in Nascar, so nope. Only points races are counted as race wins in Nascar.
@John Dat the time those Races country as points paling race
“He’s going to go back home and tell his friends how slow we are” – Chase Elliott
and rightly so
Eat it bro.
@roadbeefare we just gonna pretend that he didn’t run away with the win? He lead what 5 laps that was rain shortened. It’s cool he won and everything but it’s like people are just pretending that he won by a mile and was in the lead the whole time. He got really lucky with the rain shortening. I just don’t understand why people are giving nascar drivers a hard time when it’s not like he just destroyed everyone in the race.
@Devon Downs I think he was going to win regardless. He was on the same pit strategy as the 20 and drove up through the field.
No one is going to talk about this but Darian Grubb should be a hall of famer. Easily one of the best crew chiefs of all time
I’m amazed he isn’t already tbh
Without a doubt!
If you think that then you dont know this man. Look up his acheivements. If he comes to NASCAR he will be one of the GOATS in a short time.
Wasn’t he Carl Edwards’ Crew Chief for a long time? While Carl had just the one year to contend for a Championship, Carl was consistently Top 15 if not Top 10 every single race.
Cheers to that
Even if he becomes a “one-win-wonder” like Trevor Bayne…..
SVG and this race will be remembered for years to come, and may go down as one of the best moments ever in nascar.
I doubt he will, last supercars driver to come stateside was Scott McLaughlin in Indy, hes doing absolutely amazingly. Plus SVG has 80 wins and 3 supercars titles, hes a legend
@TNKL _42 even said in his post race interview that he is open to coming back for some races
In the end we will only be able to see if that is the case if he decided to race in cup full time once he is done in Australia. To be honest the accolades this guy has is insanely impressive. I can’t imagine he would be a one-hit wonder.
@TNKL _42Shane arguably won two of those titles because Scotty left for America. Shane is on another level, and Scott is even if not slightly ahead on his best day.
@toyotaecw I’d argue more the Ford was better than the Holden for those(hurts as a holden fan), but they’re about equal tier. Both legendary drivers
This was great for the fans and the sport. Way to go Giz!
“Welcome to the Nascar winner’s club my Kiwi friend” – What a line, go Kiwi!
That win was one of the best things that has happened for NASCAR in a long time…
not even close
@C Delreally give me another one that was not faked or pre- manufactured?
Trevor Baene and the Wood Brothers …. Again ….. in victory lane is pretty dam close
@A. BarkerRoss Chastain last year
@jordanfires9777 I agree with that. Good choice.
But, …… did not watch it.
Great replays.
This was live, and people in different countries watched it.
I watched it on the Mexican border. And I have a home in Chicago. The satellite went out in the small town I was in. Listened to it on sm radio. Drove and found a dive bar, Watched the last 10 Laps there.
Lovin the extra coverages and in car stuff, car radio etc.. awesome job Nascar. Thanks from Australia
This race was one of the bests i watched recently, so many things happening at the same time, an unexpected result, and what a track, nascar hit the target with this race
I never thought I would hear “Bugger” on Radioactive. Great race.
Aussie language mate
In Aussie/Kiwi that’s like saying dammit. Not to be taken literally.
@bbmas I got that. I thought it was funny to hear NZ /Aussie slang in nascar. That Chicago course was great.
A kiwi who honed his skills in the Aussie v8 supercar series….well done Shane.
People in Australia and New Zealand watched this race live. Marketing wise you just entered NASCAR racing into 2 new countries. What a great achievement.
Don’t know what it was like in the USA but the broadcast package I watched in Australia was awful. Constant interruptions from commercial breaks, when you’d get back to the race you’d see a couple of green flag laps before somebody else had a shunt then you’d go straight back to commercial. Definitely a departure from what we’re used to over here.
@Leercorethat’s the US experience
@Leercore unfortunately that’s how it is here
@Leercore agreed the feed was terrible. kept flicking it off and on the first 50 laps out of frustration. nothing like kayo over there, ad breaks in sport are incessant and it seemed they were having some trouble with the feed and other tech on site with the rain as well, which didn’t help. other than that, I’m happy to have gotten to know SVG with the v8s here first then see him go take my home city’s first street race win?! so cool.
Between Chastain’s wall ride, the 24 hrs and this SVG win NASCAR is rocking it right now.
Now all they have to do is actually take advantage of it and market it well
Great time to be a young nascar fan!
NASCAR’s decision-making is absolutely unhinged and it absolutely scares us but it seems to work
Trackhouse saving a dying sport
I really liked how a lot of the wrecks didn’t go into caution.
Superb highlights package, from a very casual fan. This was a very good street course, with more ample passing opportunities than similar Indycar and F1 venues. Call Chicago “Sweet Home”.
SVG was phenomenal. I’m glad he won the race. His road course skills is the whole reason why he won that race. I believe he’s a three-time champion, so that means he’s a goat and goats are always clutch so he knew all the moves and plays card, right
I can’t get enough of watching how incredibly fast SVG was coming through turn 2. Every time he just ran an absolutely perfect line to keep a ton of speed through there. It’s easy to tell how comfortable he was on tight street courses in a big heavy rear-wheel-drive car. Now I want to see him come back here and drive an oval because I’m really curious how good he’d do.
We might see that soon…his contract in AUS is up next season…I think schedule permitting he can run a couple of races next season and might be here FT in 2025…it will definitely be interesting to see what happens
he will do well , he is a voracious learner and would come up to speed very quickly , instant wins I’m doubtful but his name will be mentioned and he would take wins before his time ended there.
I mean, racing on tight street/road courses in big, heavy, rear-wheel-drive cars is pretty much the Australian V8 SuperCars Championship in a nutshell.
It was great to hear a bit of how SVG’s spotter used terminology uncommon in NASCAR to keep his driver in the loop. Telling him where his delta was and calling his lap “purple” was so cool.
What did it mean by calling his lap purple?
@Pierce Hart so in road racing green sectors are your own fastest, purple means you’re faster than everyone else on track (aka if you have a purple lap it’s the same as saying fastest lap)
@projektdotnet oh cool, thank you.
@Pierce Hart In the rest of the world, motorsports broadcasts will usually color code lap/sector times on on-screen graphics. This has then migrated into the terminology of radio communications. Green means personal best for that driver, purple means fastest of the entire session, yellow means neither of those.
SVG’s “bugger” had me when told to give Haley the spot back. Only a Brit, Aussie or Kiwi would use that particular curse!
Brilliant drive from SVG, survived the endurance race that is the first 95% of any Nascar race, then won on pure racecraft and pace!
