A New York street race? If that means Watkins Glen leaves, then no.

@BS314 NO PLEASE NO

Watkins Glen won’t leave no matter what. The track is actually owned by nascar so there is zero chance they don’t race there.

Watkins Glen might as well be on another planet compared to NYC. It’s WAY closer to Buffalo than NYC. NYC is almost like its own entity separate from the rest of the state of New York. Both tracks could coexist with likely very little split in the attending audience

Street races are stupid.. too narrow,,

Mike Swingle February 14, 2023 at 1:56 pm

Dover, Pocono and Loudon are all closer to NYC than the Glen…. And the Glen is the only track that covers Central/Western NY and Southern Ontario. No chance this would effect WGI.

For Mexico, would love to see them run the F1 track just to see them restart on that looooooooooong front stretch

Imagine the speed they can crack

BA#97 Racing February 13, 2023 at 9:19 pm

The Xfinity series literally used to race there. And they put a chicane on the front straight to slow the cars down.

B.J. McLeod will win because everyone will wreck in turn 1

Yeah I’ve been wanting them to back there and have a combined weekend with the Mexico series for a while now. Would bring more attention and connectivity to NASCAR’s international series

Now that football is over, my attention switches to the 500. Lol. Hoping for a fun year, and a car that is a little more forgiving for the drivers. 🙂

as a new yorker, id love for this to be true though id be worried about ticket prices based off the chicago tickets. But i just dont know how theres anyway they shut down streets in New York for atleast a week or so that just seems logistically impossible

My guess is that the course would be around citi field/ Flushing Meadows-Corona Park/ & the redevelopment around Willetts Point for the NYCFC stadium in like 2028, you got a giant train station right next to Citi field so getting to the track using public transportation wouldn’t be an issue, and to keep traffic out of the race area you’d really only have to close the exits on the Grand Central parkway and the 687

Like…can we at least see if this Chicago Street Race succeeds or flops before we talk about street race expansion?

Reply
Craig Stephenson February 13, 2023 at 9:54 pm

Yeah, or maybe have the date be a rotating one for smaller markets that can’t really support a permanent race. Maybe Chicago and New York don’t want to be Nascar street courses every year. So have Chicago one year, then New York, then maybe go to Portland or Seattle or Denver. Maybe go to Mexico City

Carter Healy February 13, 2023 at 10:37 pm

Rotate a different city every year.

I think NASCAR should try to piggyback off of F1 if they’re serious about street racing, and the best bet would be to race earlier in the day than F1 in Vegas

SkippingRhyme February 14, 2023 at 12:45 am

It will be a success regardless the 1st time just because it’s new and not and mile and a half

Always putting ahead of a good show, by thinking of a Middle East race instead of a race like here in Brazil, i always wanted a race on Interlagos.

Bobby Blair February 13, 2023 at 7:30 pm

If Nascar Drops Watkins Glen that’s a huge L.

Especially for this “Race” that will be here and gone in 3 years when people complain about it being a S*itshow. Please keep the Glen.

if NASCAR does race on the streets of New York, I can’t imagine the mass surge of taxi drivers being furious about more traffic lol

Reply
Cole Murray February 13, 2023 at 10:58 pm

Yeah, I could see New Yorkers being pissed with the traffic that is 10 times worse cuz of the race. They’ll most likely complain about the race cuz of not only traffic but loud noises cuz there are people who live in apartments that are a spit away from each other.

Reply
Dennis Palmer February 14, 2023 at 1:23 am

A taxi driver will probably win.

Richard Edwards February 14, 2023 at 12:21 pm

I’m ok w trying things, but they need to be really careful w Middle East. Look at the one year that WWE did the big show over there and weren’t allowed to leave, leaving them to scramble to get enough superstars for smackdown the Friday after.

Considering how chaotic New York’s traffic seems to be from what I’ve heard, I don’t think a street course is possible without pissing off a LOT of people in the process unless it’s somewhere on an abandoned roadway or something.

We can put them on the Cross Bronx ‘Expressway’ during rush hour. 6.5 miles long. During rush hour, you can spend a verrrrry long time crossing it. 30 – 45 minutes is not unheard of. How exciting, call it 8½ mph!

Reply
Brandon Wray February 14, 2023 at 3:11 pm

@WhatAboutTheBee We could make the longest race in NASCAR history. Untouchable record.

Ryan Felix February 13, 2023 at 7:36 pm

Canadian Tire MoSport would put on a good race, it did with every truck race there. One street course a year is fine but that’s it. Gotta keep 6 other road courses on the schedule as well.

I’ll give another boost to Slap’s call for an airport race in Greenville. Probably my favorite part is using the nearby convention center as an indoor air-conditioned fanzone complete with merch haulers.

He really was on the money with this! He brought up great points in his video and it could even be used has a future All-Star race location building up to the 600 in Charlotte given its proximity. Would love to see it in any capacity tho

I got into nascar because i loved watkins glen and sonoma. I enjoy the added variety that nascar is has added with the roval and daytona road course. I also really enjoy watching some of the more entertaining oval races and dont want to lose that. I miss the days we would race on the paved bristol. There needs to be a balance.

Reply
Afixion February 13, 2023 at 8:28 pm

I agree, but no need to worry about Bristol, the dirt race is only one race a year and the paved Bristol race is in Sept

Reply
WALTRIPFLAIR February 14, 2023 at 3:08 pm

@Afixion Hasn’t been paved since 1992. Concrete surface.

I’m not sure if the topic is still around that the AutoClub Speedway won’t be on the schedule next year, but there’s 2 tracks to consider, the Long Beach Street Course and the Irwidale Speedway to replace the track for the 2024 season

Reply
Julia Mianami February 13, 2023 at 9:12 pm

I would love to see the cup series at Long Beach. Sadly I don’t think Nascar would want to play second fiddle to Indycar that weekend though.

There’s already a race in New York. Its called the “(Insert Company Here) At The Glen” at Watkins Glen.

Reply
Cole Murray February 13, 2023 at 11:10 pm

So true. Apparently, Watkins Glen isn’t New York enough for New Yorkers.

Reply
Mike Swingle February 14, 2023 at 1:58 pm

@Cole Murray need to drive through PA and NJ to get to NYC from the Glen. At least if you’re looking for the quickest way.

Let’s just wait on the Chicago street course first. We know that because it is new, it will have good tv ratings, but let’s see what the on track product is like and what the fans at the event think first.

I have been cautiously optimistic about the street course, but please can we see how it goes first before going for another one?

I spoke with you up at Pocono this past summer, and I remember I referenced the Haas F1 team struggles. We were in the middle of a great race track enjoying a great weekend, without the worries involved in the logistics of a Formula 1 race. My infield campsite for the weekend was only $250! NASCAR should not attempt to compete with F1 or it will drive the cost up and chase away the good ole boys, who are still the core fan base!
