I would love to see SVG do good.

@@Dominator37 that will never happen, he needs to put in plenty of seat time. I should hope they know this. The road race he won, the cars were similar to the ones in Australia and they always race on the street, non of the Nascar guys ever raced on a road before. I think he can get it, but its going to take a few years to be competitive.

@@Dominator37that’s not true at all. People in australia respect the nascar drivers but know that SVG has gone to other championships and won, so we think he’ll do well once he gets comfortable in nascar.

I swear every time I hear Carl Edwards post January 11, 2017, I always get flashbacks to the shock I had when I found out he was retiring after competing for a championship the year prior.

I still find myself always thinking about “Why did Carl Edwards decide to retire so soon?” Why he made this decision, we may never know.

@bigobamna January 15, 2024 at 11:26 pm

he did mention during his guest appearance commentating a race this past year that he effectively wanted to spend more time with his family, though that could just be the cover story for being dissatisfied with the way that NASCAR was running things or what have you

Carl felt like he had done everything he could do to win a championship and it still wasn’t enough, he lost a tiebreaker to Tony Stewart and then got crashed because he drove across Logano in 2016. So he decided to walk away realizing that family is more important than racing and that crash was so gruesome it may just have knocked some sense into him. I’m glad he is doing okay, I doubt he will ever return to NASCAR full-time, maybe a few part time appearances here or there.

Edwards said on record several years before he retired that mandatory cautions take something away from the sport. Then after he retires stage cautions are introduced. Do the math.

Cousin Carl actually had a personality and wasn’t a punk rich kid

Tim Dugger actually makes sense as a choice when you look into it. He grew up a NASCAR fan and started performing at tracks after he met Richard Childress. He even has a song that talks about Dale Earnhardt.

@EricEstepp January 15, 2024 at 9:05 pm

He’s fine for a performance here and there, but not 10 races a year. Would be nice if they could find someone who might sell more tickets.

@EricEstepp  oh yeah for sure, 10 is a lot. But him being there for a few would make sense

NASCAR needs to take notes from Iowa Speedway’s IndyCar race weekend when it comes to artists.

Somebody would have to give NASCAR lots of money to pay for artists like that. Hy-Vee is that big money for Indy car

I went to a race with a concert beforehand, had no interest in the artist but the tickets costed about twice as much as they did at other races. How about stop with the concerts, we’re there for cars not ladyboys singing their hearts out.

The winnings shouldn’t count because every position doesn’t pay the same and that’s a big difference. A team running top 5 every week makes way more than a team running 30th every week.

@jeremyharper3462 January 16, 2024 at 3:40 pm

Regardless of that, they are getting a 40% raise by default, across the board. They need to stop winning and make that extra money work for them.

@gatling2166 January 15, 2024 at 9:35 pm

I think the main thing to consider for the charter negotiations is that the teams have not been profitable. So long as that remains true, it doesn’t really matter how someone tries to spin the numbers. If the money spent column is bigger than the money made column, the teams have every reason to dig their heels in.

No one likes how dependent the sport is on corporate sponsors. No one likes that teams have to consider how much funding a talented driver brings with them before they consider signing them. The only way the current model will ever change is if the teams stand to make enough money on their own that they can afford to take risks. Yes, the tracks have to be taken into consideration, and yes, NASCAR has their own expenses to worry about, but without drivers and without the teams that support them, they’ll all starve.

Now, maybe it could be argued that the drivers don’t need to make so much money, and maybe the teams could find places to cut costs, but at the end of the day, they’re the most important part of the equation. They should have the lion’s share of the negotiating power. It’s not 1960 anymore. The France family shouldn’t be able to dictate terms that aren’t favorable to the drivers they made their fortunes off of.

@jeremyharper3462 January 16, 2024 at 3:45 pm

@johnhaas2523 exactly
A competitive race team will never be overly profitable. There is always something to spend that extra money on.
Having said that, if they can’t figure out a way to make the near 50% increase this new TV deal and new proposed agreement brings to work for them, then I just don’t feel sorry for the teams.

Great vid Eric . Im hoping SVG can be relevant this year . Im not expecting wins on anything oval , but just be a factor if he can . In 2025 im am expecting real relevance on ovals . He is such a quick learner i expect by the time he’s done 6 to 10 races this year , he will be moving up to near the front . Him being in Nascar this year , just ups my excitement level for Saturday races . Good reporting on the negotiations, good opinions on it too . Keep it up Eric , you are the best at this

There’s one thing I’d love to see not return in the new charter agreement. The guaranteed qualification for every event. The chartered teams feel too safe right now. I’d love to see non-chartered teams make an attempt to make the full schedule. Right now, it’s simply impossible for them. And that way, maybe a Dale Jr type of person will see a possibility of starting races and actually competing without spending $40M on a piece of paper

What sucks is NASCAR has said themselves they don’t like the charter system but the teams are practically demanding it to stay

@@JackLikesTrackhouse everything I’ve seen from what Phelps has said they are all in on extending but NASCAR does not agree with the owners on permanent charters and there’s probably some other things Jim France and Steve Phelps want to change

I wouldn’t be surprised if Carl Edward’s slips behind the wheel of sage 60 sometime this season. Knowing he has a history with what is now RFK. Of course with being one of their long time drivers.

Hey Eric, Thanks for the SVG content and updates. You are now my man for NASCAR info. I’ve followed SVG since 2007 when I first saw him race Formula Ford open wheelers. SVG needs to race every weekend all weekend. He was bored with Supercars so get ready for a hungry Kiwi. Really enjoy your media content too, I work in TV media so find this side of the sport (the money side) very interesting. Keep up the good work from a fan in little old NZ.
