When they had less parity, people complained that it was too much about money and not enough about driving. I remember that well. I also remember quite a few folks complaining “Any given week, we know a handful of drivers are the only ones with a realistic shot at winning. I want to see more winners.” I think there’s a complaining addiction and the complaint shifts as needed.

Well, people are dumb. “People” don’t know what makes anything good or bad. The same people said the 2018 All-Star Race was the greatest thing ever, and I want that racing. Which was low horsepower pack racing on a 1.5 mile track…and led to the Gen 6 era. This is why the most successful businesses are the ones who don’t listen to “the people”.
100% this- we the fans were tired of the riding around and the “we had a great run finishing second today” so they implemented the stages and the win and your in chase format. We the fans have asked for every change that NASCAR has implemented and lived to regret it. We need to chill and stop chasing every knee jerk reaction
(That being said we need to make a change on the short tracks)
And now that we have more parity it’s more about money than ever. KP’s right, it definitely feels self-defeating.

here in Ireland, he’s basically the only driver most have ever heard of
I’m a Larson fan but I’m here in America. Do people in Ireland know of him because of his ability or do you know of him because of his slur online?

At some point the individual has to be invested in the sport and Larson abilities .. your diminishing this individuals opinion by suggesting they only care about something that occured 3 or 4 years ago..
People support Hamlin due to MJ involvement with 23XI..
They support bubba simply based off skintone..
Then most build off that..
The list goes on..
So it’s not like the dynamics of gaining fans for one driver is different than their counterparts..

Dude. Eric. Ive said this a handful of times on these milestone moments. You WILL have a job at Nascar one day if you want it. You are the future of the new wave and style of Nascar reporting. Always have been. And you continue to get the respect of Nascar names that others cant attract. And they all feel comfortable with you. Celebrate a little dude, and keep the pedal down!
while this is true I frankly like him being on the “outside” it means that Eric can say whatever he wants and doesn’t have to care about the “right” stance or keeping everyone looking good. I fear a full nascar job would soften his edges to much
So I have been saying this for the last 10 or so years. I grew up watching NASCAR through the 90s and in general I remember back then you never saw 20 21 22 year old drivers. In 2001 I remember when Casey Atwood got signed to Ray Evernhams Dodge team #19 at 20 years old to start the season (he turned 21 in August of that year). I remember all the talk about how young he was and how he did so well just missing Rookie of the Year finishing 2nd behind Kevin Harvick. Anyway you see drivers getting cup rides regularly at 21-22 years old. Back in the day, a driver wouldn’t get a shot at a cup ride til mid to late 20s even early 30s. Things were just different and it all together gave the drivers personality and you got to know them really well because they were interviewed much more….heck these days if you don’t finish in top 5 or something really significant happens you don’t get interviewed….I remember saying to someone that I didn’t even know what many of the drivers looked like these days. When have you ever seen Harrison Burton on camera for an interview? And the drivers that do get on camera all have the same typical bland personality. For example, the last real superstar in NASCAR was Carl Edwards….These days I wonder how some of the drivers in NASCAR have fans when they arent ever interviewed or exposed to show there personality and expose them to give them fan appeal….Formula one is killing NASCAR with this….

The reason NASCAR lacks superstars right now is because the championship format resembles a roulette wheel more than a measuring stick of greatness. Back in the Winston Cup era, a driving having a career season leading the points in the summer would be the No. 1 story every single week with everybody chasing him providing their own sub storylines connected to the main one. Everything the championship leaders and their teams did was magnified, creating new storylines each week that built over time. Now, because we know that everything is going to be wiped out in manufactured late season playoff resets, nobody really cares who is leading the points in July or August, or at least not enough for it to be a story that builds. We all know it’s going to be wiped out, and because the playoff rounds are so volatile, no storylines or star drivers ever gain traction. Go back to the pre 2004 championship format and I can guarantee you have more mainstream NASCAR stars in a mere three or four years.
