I think you shouldn’t need a waiver as long as you can still point your way in. If you don’t make every race but still scored enough points to get in on points alone you should still be in. The waiver should just be for win and your in situations in which case they should be very rarely applied, just missing a race or 2 due to injury or other unique circumstance, but there should be clear cut guidelines. I think this would be avoided if NASCAR got rid of win and your in and just based it off points. Maybe cut out a round of the playoffs to go 12, and do 3 races for the championship 4 instead. I prefer a season long points format, but I prefer this over the current format.

Agreed. The only reason why they have it is because of the win-and-you’re-in, and they don’t want a part-timer making the playoffs this way. However, I think that they should ditch the win-and-you’re-in.

They should have fired the driver not the crew chief

Dale Jr said it best. They should remove the waiver rule. It’s become completely meaningless. If a driver can get 1 for being suspended, Larson definitely should get 1.

That’s the part no one has ever really touched when talking about the waiver. The suspension factor. Chase Elliot didn’t only get a waiver for his injury last year, he also got it for his suspension. If NASCAR is gonna give waivers for suspensions, then they basically are gonna be forced to give them to anyone for any reason.

I don’t often agree with DBC, but I think this week, oddly enough with 2/3rds of the hosts missing, I think they make the best argument for it.

If you don’t want to listen to the full podcast…

The pro waiver argument is basically: the rule is confusing already and waivers have been given out like candy in the past.

The anti-waiver argument is: what’s the difference between blowing off a race to race in a competing organization and blowing off a race to go deep sea fishing? It’s purely based on opinion and opinions change so we need to set a precedent that you can’t just come into the sport, win a race, blow off every other race and get into the playoffs.

The biggest piece of the waiver debate is that he had every plan in place to make the start of the 600, and still made an effort to get to the track and finish. And it’s the double, something we rarely see but there’s long precedent for attempting it. Waivers have been handed out no problem, even last year with Chase Elliott was suspended for a week (this was separate from his injury waiver.) Nascar definitely should amend the rule to make it clearer what is and is not waiver eligible, but their rules are written in pencil anyway.

Owners championship pays the bills. 5 car is still eligible waiver or no waiver. The only people who don’t want him to get it are those who are scared they can’t beat him.

Thanks for being honest about H.D. simply D.P. 2.0 and nothing more than hype.

They gave suspended drivers a waiver. So they should give him one. Suspensions should be punishment, granting a waiver makes a suspension worthless.

I can see Joey’s point, but I don’t agree with it. Like you said, NASCAR promoted this. It would be different if they didn’t agree with it. But if a guy can get a waiver after being suspended for on-track incidents, then Larson can get one for bad luck.

The rule you referenced that pertains to waivers, etc, reminds me of that little blurb at the end of job descriptions – “…and other duties as required.”….which basically means anything. Or, in NASCAR’s case – “whatever we think will benefit us.”

I feel bad for Deegan she hasn’t a crew chief with her for a full season since her rookie year in trucks idk how you expect someone to get better when there’s constantly someone different on your cars
