What are your opinions on NASCAR’s new EV prototype and EV racing in general?

Not gonna lie, I don’t understand the hate. Like, yeah, the roar of the engines is iconic and electric wouldn’t be the same, but we haven’t even seen a single race. Give it a chance, right?

HOPE THAT THE WING AND THE DESIGN ARE CHANGED FOR THE FINAL PRODUCTS.

I watch nascar because i love the racing not because i like the sound of the cars. And since going electric is the only way NASCAR will last a decade into the future I am very pleased with this.

My question is why do they have a giant wing on the back? Did nobody learn from the Car of Tomorrow?

As for NASCAR EVs, I would most certainly prefer to have them be its own sub-series.

Reply
@tescoshortage July 6, 2024 at 10:42 pm

I suspect that NASCAR built this car mostly for road course racing and not intermediate ovals. The wing shouldn’t be an issue at the lower speeds of a typical road course.

With Dana White he’s talking about Nitro Rallycross partnering with NASCAR as Nitrocross already uses EV in their group E class. Whether he’s behind the NASCAR EV Prototype potential series has yet to be seen.

Reply
@Milton_Valenzuela July 6, 2024 at 10:36 pm

The Prototype is quite groundbreaking, but I don’t think EV racing will ever have the same impact that many other racing series have had for decades. The racing product can be great, but the noise of the cars are part of what make them and the sport attractive

Reply
@scottmcqueen3964 July 7, 2024 at 2:29 am

This, I really like EV’s, as daily drivers and commuters they are fantastic, and you can dress them up to be very fun cars to drive too.

But for motorsport, I just can’t see them ever matching the imperfection and agility of ice powered cars enough to be able to create a decent spectacle without the noise, and in general, I don’t think they need too. We can use sustainable fuels and other expensive technology to transition motorsport into a more climate conscious future.

I honestly think NASCAR should move more towards the Garage 56 Prototype. Hybridization would bring a lot of people together. You get the benefit of the big V8 and the added power of electrification. Innovative and AWD NASCAR could be pretty wild. They’d just stick to the road and go!

@otaviofrn_adv July 6, 2024 at 11:18 pm

One: this thing is eerily similar to a TCR car.
Two: nascar may be dumb, but they will not go fully electric in Cup. If they do, they are dead. Or the fans are dumber than I thought (in case they keep watching).
Three: I think the correct way to introduce electric in the Cups series is a hybrid, a project closer to Garage 56. And make a spec series for electrics that can train nascar drivers in road courses, because the overall driving of nascar in those is very bad, a ton of going outside or making a super radius in a given turn.

Reply
@PistonAvatarGuy July 7, 2024 at 5:17 am

They literally can’t go electric, they’d only be able to run for a few minutes before needing to charge.

Reply
@G2Merica July 6, 2024 at 11:32 pm

So what nobody is talking about is what it takes to build ANY electric car and how much MORE you need from earth to build it. I say we just keep the corn RENEWABLE fuel and oil and stop making it faster because of safety.

Reply
@benjaminpriano9535 July 6, 2024 at 11:44 pm

Two concerns:
1. How do you have these cars last 300, 400, 500, or even 600 miles? Yes, more company’s are doing a better job with charging, but it has been well documented that electric and high speeds equal less distance. Charging these cars instantly, like the ICE counterpart, is the big issue.
2. Fires. Fires are a part of Nascar. They are relatively easy to put out. The problem is with the new electric design. I recall reading an article that said (paraphrasing) firefighters are not willing to put out electric fires because the lithium batteries could explode, severely injuring those firefighters. I also recall a situation where a burning Tesla had to be dropped into a pool of water just to put the fire out. What happens if this happens in Nascar? Can Nascar properly keep each driver safe, as most cars have their electric powertrain underneath them. What happens if there is a wreck and the batteries get damaged? Can Nascar keep their drivers safe while they are driving these cars? I just do not think this technology, as cool as it is, is ready for the track.
