Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals plans he had made with former bitter rival Kyle Busch right before his death

Despite their past beef, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. was supposed to hang out with the late Kyle Busch before he died, and he’s taking the death hard.

Earnhardt took to X, formerly Twitter, to react to the news of Busch’s passing. He acknowledged their “challenging existence,” which lasted several years, but revealed that they “took the time to figure out our differences.”

He was “super eager” for them to “get on better terms,” and they had made plans to make that happen. Earnhardt revealed that they were talking about a trip to Wilkesboro over the summer. Busch even planned on seeing him on Thursday, May 28.

“Most recently we had even been discussing him running my Late Model at Wilkesboro this summer. He seemed extremely happy and we had planned to meet up next Thursday to get his seat to the shop,” Earnhardt revealed. “He laughed over the idea of his fans and JRM fans having to cheer in unison during that race.”

Busch’s legacy will live on. Earnhardt talked about his legacy, dubbing the two-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion “one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history.” However, he was an even better man off the track.

“Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that,” Earnhardt praised. “But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family. I will never be able to make sense of this loss but I am thankful that we had found a way to become friends.”

Shortly before his death was announced, Busch’s family issued a statement, revealing that he was dealing with a “severe” illness and was hospitalized. In turn, he was going to miss the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend.

At the time of his announcement, a cause of death hadn’t been revealed. AP News reported that he “became unresponsive” while testing in the Chevrolet racing simulator on Wednesday, May 20.

A couple of weeks earlier, Busch was heard telling his team that he needed to see a doctor after a race during the Watkins Glen Cup Series on Sunday, May 10 (per the Tennessean). Fox reported he was dealing with a sinus cold. Six days later, Busch said he was working through it. He would proceed to compete in the All-Star Race on Sunday, May 17, finishing in 17th place.
