NASCAR brought back the 10-race Chase for 2026, but one controversial part of the old system remained: 16 drivers still qualify for the championship.
For many fans, that is too many.
NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin agrees with part of the criticism. He does not think 16 is ideal either. But he has now revealed to the fans the major reason NASCAR kept the field that large.

Mark Martin Reveals the Real Reason Behind 16
Martin wanted NASCAR to move away from the elimination-style playoffs and return to a championship that rewards consistency. The new 2026 format does that in several ways. There are no elimination rounds, no winner-take-all finale and no automatic playoff spot simply for winning a race.
But NASCAR kept 16 drivers in the Chase.
Martin says sponsor contracts played a major role.
“Most of the teams have bonuses in their sponsor contracts for making the old playoff system. @NASCAR made the number 16 to keep from hurting them. I don’t like 16 either but I like not hurting teams while getting a good compromise everyone can live with” Mark Martin wrote on X.
So, it seems the decision looks less like a sporting choice and more like a business compromise.
Cutting the field to 10 or 12 would mean more teams missing the postseason and potentially losing sponsor bonuses tied to playoff qualification.
Martin has defended the overall 2026 format as a compromise, saying: “I think that this is the most perfect compromise that you could ever ask for,”
The problem is that fans still have to watch 16 drivers fight for the title.
Fans Say 16 Drivers is too Much
Some fans believe NASCAR could have worked with teams to change those sponsorship agreements instead of keeping the Chase so large.
One fan wrote on X: “If NASCAR really wanted full season they would work with the teams to amend those contracts to say Top 16 in points. But they don’t, its an excuse to keep the fake drama reset.”
Another fan suggested NASCAR could protect the financial incentives without keeping 16 championship contenders:
“Would it be possible to keep the payouts the same for position 11–16 and cut the Chase field to 10? Seems like there would be another storyline there, because you would have (probably) those 11–20th in the standings would have the opportunity to battle it out for those payouts.”
That is the question NASCAR will eventually have to answer.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wants a Smaller Field
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has also argued on his podcast that 16 weakens the importance of the regular-season cut line.
“There’s an argument to be said that we need to cut this Chase field down to 10, down to 12. If we want the cut line to be a conversation worth having at this point in the season, you’re gonna have to move that cut line to 12th or 10th.”
“Cause I’m gonna tell you right now, if the cut line was 10th and you got Kyle Larson sitting on top of that, the f broadcast is gonna be on it,” he added.
His point is fair: fewer spots would mean more pressure.
And fans agree with him. One user on X wrote, “I would like it to get to 10 again. Looking at the teams who were around that bubble for the last month, that storyline would have been insane to follow. The stakes would have felt so much higher.”
For this season though, NASCAR has already made a huge change by removing eliminations. Now the question is whether 16 drivers is the one piece it should change in the future.
