Matt Kenseth is one of the next three inductees to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in the 2023 class. Many will look at the great wins he had, his championship, or even his rivalries, but for me one of the best moments of Kenseth’s career that I remember is his 2005 comeback. How Matt Kenseth managed to vault himself from being outside of the top 25 in points to a spot in the second Chase for the Nextel Cup. This is the greatest comeback of Matt Kenseth’s career.

What is your favorite Matt Kenseth moment?

The 2003 championship. What others questioned, I thought was a tremendous accomplishment. Consistency over the entire season and just a little bit of luck were how you used to win a championship. Now, one accident not of your making or a blown engine at the wrong time and it’s gone.

His first Busch win at Rockingham in ’98. I followed him from back when he was racing late models in Wisconsin, and that win meant he really had a future down south. Crazy to think he’s a Hall of Famer. Congrats Matt!

First, I’m glad someone covered this. I remember in 2005 following him as a fan and points watching each week. When he caught up and ended up making the Chase, I was ecstatic he made up that many points. Thought it was insane. As far as a favoring moment, can’t really pick just one. The close duels, even ones he lost, with Johnson, Burton, Larson/Elliott, Kahne, etc. all stand out. His IROC championship season was also cool. Winning on his 500th start. Moreover, his dry sense of humor made his interviews enjoyable, as well.

Matt Kenseth is one of the most underrated NASCAR drivers ever. If he was driving in the 80s, he might’ve been a three time champion with how consistent he was.

I mean he’d be a 3 time champion if Jimmie Johnson would have picked a different profession, he simply was unfortunately driving during the prime of the most dominate Nascar team ever.

2005 Roush is my all time favorite driver lineup of any Motorsport.

I remember how much parity NASCAR had in 2005. Even the good drivers like Dale Jr, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon had bad seasons.

Also Bobby Labonte and Michael Waltrip.

Outside of his Martinsville incident with Logano in 2015, I would say that Kenseth’s last win was my favorite moment. Of course, I didn’t really think so at the time.

My favorite Matt Kenseth moment was his last win, because I was able to witness it in person! It was absolutely amazing!

Probably my favorite moment of Matt Kenseths career was seeing him get his last win at Phoenix…. I don’t know if any other NASCAR race has ever made me cry with such tears of joy……

Roush held Matt Kenseth back so much, yeah he won the title in 2003, but it felt like so much of the 2004-2009 period was marred with inconsistency, lack of reliability, and pitroad errors. I always remember joking around as a kid that it was that the Matt Kenseth trademark line was “I think I have a loose wheel.”
He, much like Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle’s legacies will always be held back by being overly loyal to Jack Roush for far too long.

Matt, 2000 ROTY. I’m down to see Noah and Gibbs race for Rookie of the Year. That award has lost some of its luster recently and TV hardly ever mentions it but maybe they will this season. There are no other drivers they would knock out of a fair chance (as of now). But, I would be curious to see a video researching what racers have been declared ineligible for ROTY because of the 7 cup race limit.

Matt Kenseth, one of the most underrated drivers of all time and the last champion of the Winston Cup, the last legitimate championship.

It’s for sure a lesser remembered moment, but it was great to see him dominate the field in person at 2015 Fall Richmond. Led 348 of 400 and was never challenged. Always special to see your favorite driver win in person! Only saw him win one other time in the 2011 Charlotte fall!

2005 was my first year hardcore watching NASCAR, It was such a roller coaster as a Matt Kenseth fan. I was a kid, and I still remember coming home early from something during the Bristol race, cause by-god Matt Kenseth was dominating and my parents and I were NOT going to miss his first win of the year after watching him struggle so hard.

It’s amazing that the wreck in the 2005 Coke 600 wasn’t worse. It’s also incredible that Mikey’s car didn’t even attempt to blow over considering he was on his lid enough that year.

There are so many great moments of his career. It’s hard not to overlook his rookie year though, but between his first victory at the Coca Cola 600 holding off Bobby Labonte (who was always there at the end at the Charlotte races) and his consistency, he quietly beat the media juggernaut that is Dale Jr in the Rookie of the Year battle.

You should do Kyle Larson’s comeback at the Roval in 2021. He went from a few laps down and not making it to the next round, to winning the race and ultimately the championship.

Outside of Eric Estepp I was probably the biggest Kenseth fan there was. Outside of meeting him over a dozen times at the track and other appearances over the years, my favorite moments were: the first win at Charlotte (still have that t-shirt with Matt’s faded signature), the 2003 Championship, both Daytona 500 wins and the last win at Phoenix, not to mention the fight with Keselowski and the epic payback of Logano at Martinsville.
