NASCAR is making another small adjustment to its superspeedway rules package, this time ahead of the Oct. 25 Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

NASCAR announced Thursday that the package used for August’s race at Daytona International Speedway will largely carry over to Talladega, with one important change: the rear spoiler blade will be shortened from 4 inches to 3.5 inches.

Smaller Spoiler for Talladega

The change means NASCAR is taking another half-inch out of the spoiler after already reducing it from the original 7 inches to 4 inches for Daytona’s August race.

The Daytona package also included a horsepower reduction from 510 to 465 horsepower. That part of the package will remain in place at Talladega.

NASCAR’s goal is to give drivers more maneuverability in the pack and create more opportunities to build runs and make passes rather than relying heavily on track position and fuel-saving strategies.

Former Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray said the Daytona package appeared to be successful and welcomed NASCAR taking another step with the spoiler reduction. He also pointed out that Talladega is roughly eight feet wider than Daytona, potentially giving drivers more room to work with when making moves.

NASCAR Also Changes Stage Lengths

The spoiler is not the only change coming to Talladega.

NASCAR has also adjusted the stage lengths to match the spring race at the Alabama superspeedway. Stage 1 will end on Lap 98, Stage 2 on Lap 143, with the scheduled finish on Lap 188, barring overtime.

The previous stage format had been scheduled to end at Laps 60 and 120 before the final lap 188. The shorter later stages are intended to reduce fuel-saving and encourage teams to race harder for stage points.

Talladega will be the eighth of 10 Chase races in the 2026 Cup Series championship fight and the only drafting track in the Chase.

NASCAR will now get another opportunity to evaluate whether the smaller spoiler can create more movement and passing in one of the sport’s most unpredictable races.
