How Jesse Love Won a Title but May Still Be Denied a Cup Seat

Jesse Love looked like the obvious future of Richard Childress Racing.

The 21-year-old won the 2025 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship, quickly became one of Chevrolet’s top young prospects. He naturally appeared lined up for an eventual full-time move into the Cup Series.

But today inside the NASCAR garage, and according to Bob Pockrass, the conversation around Love’s future may no longer be about performance but toward a sponsorship issue that could block his path to Cup racing.

According to growing speculation around the industry, the biggest obstacle facing Love is not results or team confidence. It’s the sponsor portfolio attached to RCR’s Cup program.

At the center of it, is zone™ Premium Nicotine Pouches, a tobacco-free nicotine brand owned by ITG Brands. The company is the main full-season partner within RCR’s Cup program and operates under strict internal marketing guidelines tied to nicotine advertising.

Even though the legal purchase age for nicotine products in the United States is 21, tobacco-related companies often apply a stricter 25-and-older threshold for athletes and public-facing ambassadors to avoid accusations of marketing toward younger audiences.

A few years back, Philip Morris International was forced to suspend a global social media campaign for its IQOS heated tobacco product after investigative reports revealed they had hired a 21-year-old Instagram model, directly violating their internal 25-year age limit.

The same issue reportedly applies to several THC, hemp, and adult beverage brands connected to RCR. Because those industries face heavy legal scrutiny, companies typically prefer drivers who are clearly older than the legal age minimum when attaching them to national marketing campaigns.

That creates a difficult (and unfair) situation for Love.

Love already has sponsorship relationships through brands like C4 Energy in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. But those partnerships alone don’t look like they provide the level of funding needed for a full 36-race Cup schedule.

An RCR full-time Cup promotion would almost certainly require Love to appear in nicotine, alcohol, or THC-branded liveries during the season.

Love Out, Austin Hill and Noah Gragson as Short-Term Favorite

So now, RCR’s driver planning has reportedly started leaning toward older alternatives who immediately satisfy sponsor requirements.

Austin Hill, 32, has already stepped into the renumbered No.33 Chevrolet after the sudden death of Kyle Busch. Hill will make his third consecutive Cup start for the team this weekend at Michigan.

Noah Gragson is another possible option. Beyond experience, Gragson’s age and previous relationship with Bass Pro Shops are strong commercial fits within RCR.

At the same time, rival teams are naturally starting to monitor Love’s situation closely.

Legacy Motor Club is a possible landing spot with an expansion to a third Cup entry in 2027. Rumors have also connected Love to potential interest from Wood Brothers Racing, Trackhouse Racing and Spire Motorsports.

The situation has also frustrated many fans because Love’s rise through NASCAR has largely been built on results. After winning the 2025 championship, many saw him as the natural next prospect in line for a Cup promotion.

Instead, the current roadblock has little to do with race performance and far more to do with corporate legal strategy.

Others have pointed to the contradiction between NASCAR’s long-running “youth movement” push and a system that could prevent one of its youngest champions from reaching Cup because sponsors want older-facing ambassadors.

The comparison to previous generations has also become part of the discussion. Drivers like Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, and Joey Logano all reached NASCAR’s top level before turning 21.

One of NASCAR’s fastest-rising young drivers may be unfairly blocked to get the ride he righfully deserves.
